The trade-off is a 30 fps ceiling and image-quality compromises noted in launch reviews. No reviewed source establishes a later, title-specific Switch 2 performance patch, so this is a review of the available release and launch-review findings—not a claim that a recent update changed how it runs.
What is included in the Switch 2 version?
Nintendo lists the full FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE and FF7R EPISODE INTERmission in the Switch 2 edition. The main game retells the original story through the characters’ escape from Midgar, expanding that portion of the story into a full-length RPG. It is one entry in a multi-part remake project, not a complete retelling of the entire original game. Nintendo’s product listing describes the hybrid combat, which blends real-time action with command-based choices.

Episode INTERmission is a parallel side story starring Yuffie Kisaragi. The listing also includes bonus equipment and summon materia. Square Enix describes Intergrade as a visually enhanced edition of the remake with the Yuffie episode and gameplay additions. Square Enix’s game page details the edition and its demo.

How does it look and run on Switch 2?
Reviewers found the port impressive, particularly as a handheld version of a large, cinematic RPG, but they also described visible compromises. Nintendo Life praised the presentation in both handheld and docked play while noting a 30 fps cap, softer resolution, fuzzy textures, and dithering around Cloud’s hair. Those are the outlet’s review observations, not measurements from an independent test here. Read Nintendo Life’s Switch 2 review.

Tom’s Guide likewise praised the presentation, especially in handheld mode, while reporting that resolution loss became more noticeable during action. Its reviewer described a 30 fps maximum on Switch 2 and compared it with a 60 fps option in PS5 Performance mode. That comparison applies to the specific versions and mode cited by the reviewer, rather than to every platform configuration. Tom’s Guide’s hands-on review has the outlet’s account.
The practical choice is straightforward: Switch 2 offers the portability of playing this substantial RPG in handheld mode, while players who prioritize higher frame rates or sharper image quality may prefer another version. The launch reviews support that trade-off; they do not establish a direct, controlled comparison across platforms.

Has a Switch 2 update improved performance?
The available official product information and launch-era reviews do not establish a later, title-specific Switch 2 patch or a post-patch performance change. Treat the 30 fps and image-quality observations above as findings from those reviews, not as confirmation of the game’s current behavior after a subsequent technical update. An update notice for FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH concerns a different game and does not establish an update for Remake Intergrade.
Nintendo lists January 22, 2026 as the Switch 2 release date; Square Enix also announced the release and a physical edition. Square Enix’s announcement covers the launch details. It does not establish current stock, physical format or download requirements, so check a live retailer listing for those specifics.

Combat options and accessibility aids
The combat system combines direct action with command-based choices, but the game offers ways to make battles less demanding. Square Enix’s announcement describes Streamlined Progression, while TechRadar notes optional boosters including maximum HP, full ATB, and maximum damage. These can reduce friction for players more interested in the story or exploration than in managing every fight. TechRadar’s review discusses its experience in both handheld and docked modes on a standard Switch 2.
Classic mode is another option for players who want a simpler approach to battles; TechRadar describes it alongside the available boosters. These assists make the game more forgiving, though they also reduce the challenge of combat. You can choose the level of help that suits your play rather than treating the default combat demands as fixed.

Demo, save transfer, and download size
Square Enix says the Switch 2 demo covers the entire first chapter, the mako reactor bombing mission. Qualifying demo save data can carry into the full game, but the publisher states that transfer is not possible if full-game save data has already been created. Qualifying demo data can also unlock the Revival Earrings and Survival Set in the full game. Check Square Enix’s page for current demo availability and the exact transfer conditions before starting the full version.

Is the Switch 2 edition worth playing?
It is a persuasive choice for Switch 2 owners who want the Midgar story and Yuffie episode in a portable package, and who are comfortable with a 30 fps presentation and the image-quality trade-offs reviewers reported. The inclusion of the full remake and Episode INTERmission makes this a substantial single purchase, while combat assists let players lower the difficulty if desired. If frame rate and image clarity matter more to you than handheld play, compare the available versions before choosing. For buying, verify the current price, edition, stock, and physical-format details directly: launch-era retailer prices and stock reports are not reliable guides to today’s offer.
