In the first weeks of Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail, early tank impressions ranged from “feels good” for Warrior and Gunbreaker to “clunky” for Dark Knight, while one player called Paladin a reliable “work horse.” Those are individual reactions from July 2024, not a ranking or evidence of how the jobs perform today. Official Patch 7.0 notes establish what changed; the comments show how some players described the feel.
What changed for tanks in Dawntrail’s 7.0 launch
Dawntrail, the fifth expansion for FINAL FANTASY XIV Online, launched on July 2, 2024, according to Square Enix’s announcement. Patch 7.0 added and adjusted job actions across the game, including Paladin, Warrior, Dark Knight, and Gunbreaker. Square Enix’s Patch 7.0 Notes are the authoritative record of what shipped; the expansion’s launch is the relevant point in time for these impressions.
In a May 30, 2024 developer digest, Square Enix described the 7.x job work as organizing job controls and improving gameplay satisfaction. The digest also previewed distinct additional effects for each tank’s 30% damage-reduction action. That was preview context, so the final 7.0 notes—not the earlier preview—determine what actually went live. The same digest said enhancing job identity might be a focus for the expansion after Dawntrail; that was an indication of direction, not a promise about a specific future change. See the Letter from the Producer LIVE Part LXXXI Digest.
Some Patch 7.0 content requires registering Dawntrail to the service account. The patch notes specify the access condition; this impressions piece is not a guide to expansion ownership or platform availability.

What early players said about each tank
A July 2024 thread on r/ffxivdiscussion asked, “How are tanks feeling so far in dawntrail?” Its comments offer a small snapshot of individual player responses shortly after launch, rather than a survey or controlled comparison.
| Tank | Early description in the thread | What that establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Warrior | One commenter said it felt good. | An individual impression of feel, not measured performance. |
| Gunbreaker | One commenter said it felt good. | An individual impression of feel, not measured performance. |
| Dark Knight | One commenter described it as clunky. | A subjective reaction, not evidence that the job is objectively difficult or weak. |
| Paladin | One commenter called it a reliable “work horse.” | A favorable personal characterization, not a tested comparison. |
These descriptions capture how those players experienced their jobs at that moment. They do not establish why a rotation felt good or clunky, whether defensive tools were effective in a particular encounter, or how any job performed in dungeons versus coordinated trials and raids. The thread is useful as early player language, not as a proxy for the tank community as a whole.

How to read the impressions without turning them into a ranking
Separate the two kinds of evidence. Square Enix’s patch notes document the actions and adjustments implemented in 7.0; community comments document only what those particular commenters felt. Neither source supplies a complete four-job evaluation. In particular, this evidence cannot establish which tank is objectively easiest, strongest, or best for dungeons.
Tank feel is also more specific than a single adjective. A fuller comparison would need to consider how each job’s rotation and burst window feel, how its defensive tools answer tankbusters and party-wide damage, and whether the content is a dungeon pull or a coordinated trial or raid. Those dimensions are useful questions to ask, not results measured by the July thread.

The reactions above date to July 2024 and describe the launch-era 7.0 experience. They should not be read as a statement about current job balance. Square Enix maintains a Job Guide: Previous Patch Adjustments page that includes changes made after 7.0; consult it alongside the current job guides and patch notes when evaluating the present state of a tank. Later adjustments can change how a job plays, so the launch snapshot cannot settle a current choice.
