Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Neither is universally better: the main reason to choose one is its version-exclusive Pokémon. The Kanto adventure is shared, so pick the game with the Pokémon you most want—or choose the opposite version from a local trading partner.
What’s different between FireRed and LeafGreen?
The two games are paired remakes of Pokémon Red and Green set in Kanto. Their central adventure and broad content are shared; the practical distinction is which Pokémon are available in each version. Nintendo describes the returning games as preserving the originals’ contents, with connectivity adapted for Switch.
These releases build on the 2004 Game Boy Advance remakes. Nintendo’s announcement highlights the original 151 Pokémon and GBA-era features such as abilities, natures, weather, held items, and a choice of player-character gender. The original GBA games also added maps and refreshed graphics compared with the 1996 Japanese originals.
Choose based on the Pokémon you want
Examples commonly listed as version exclusives include Growlithe and Scyther in FireRed, and Vulpix, Bellsprout, Slowpoke, and Pinsir in LeafGreen. These are examples, not a complete roster; check a game-specific Pokédex reference for the full list, including post-game availability, before deciding around a less familiar species.
#1 Best Overall
- This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only. It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
- Choose FireRed if its exclusive Pokémon—such as Growlithe or Scyther—are the ones you want to catch or train.
- Choose LeafGreen if you prefer its exclusives, including Vulpix, Bellsprout, Slowpoke, or Pinsir.
- Choose either if you are not attached to the exclusive roster, or can trade with someone who owns the other version.
There is no official comparative ranking or evidence that one version is more popular, higher quality, or more satisfying. “Better” comes down to your preferred Pokémon and whether you can trade.
Trading: what changes on Switch
On the Switch and Switch 2 editions, trading and battling use local wireless rather than online play. Nintendo says players can connect with up to four other players in the Pokémon Wireless Club for trading, battling, or a minigame; the FireRed store listing specifies 2–5 players over local wireless. Nintendo’s support FAQ says online play is not supported and a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not needed to purchase or play the games.
Rank #2
- Join up to 39 other wireless Trainers in the Union Room for a free-for-all, or connect with just two or three in the Direct Corner
- Prove yourself in the region's Pokémon League while single-handedly bringing down Team Rocket - then open up all-new storylines with unexpected twists
- Bring the Pokemon you capture in Fire Red to the worlds of Leaf Green, Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, or Pokemon Colosseum for more challenge
That makes the opposite-version partner especially useful: local trading can help fill gaps in your Pokédex. If you do not have a nearby player with the other game, make your choice assuming you will mainly have access to your own version’s roster.
Which release should you buy?
The current editions are digital Nintendo Switch software, playable on Switch 2. Nintendo says there will be no physical Switch release and that the games are not planned for the GBA Nintendo Classics collection. The original Game Boy Advance cartridges are a separate release for compatible GBA hardware; they are not Switch copies.

Nintendo announced the digital Switch releases for February 27, 2026. Its Americas announcement described separate English, European French, and European Spanish versions, so check the language carefully before buying. The announcement listed a suggested retail price of $19.99 USD at that time; this is not a guarantee of the current eShop price. For most players, the decision is simple: choose the version with the exclusives you care about most. If that does not settle it, choose the game your local trading partner does not have—or flip a coin. The shared Kanto adventure is the main event in both.
