Short answer: On standard PS5, Final Fantasy XVI offers a choice between a 30 fps-targeted Graphics Mode and a 60 fps-targeted Frame-Rate Mode; the latter can be uneven, particularly outside combat. Steam Deck reports describe a more constrained experience, with frame-rate drops and image-quality compromises. Those reports are not a controlled, same-scene comparison, so they show the direction of the trade-off—not a precise platform-to-platform performance gap.
How the platforms compare
| What matters | Steam Deck | Standard PS5 |
|---|---|---|
| Frame rate | In a 2024 pre-release demo test at 720p, Low settings, and FSR 3 Ultra Performance, Steam Deck HQ reported around 30 fps only some of the time, with lower results in demanding scenes. A separate September 2026 test reported drops below 30 fps in traversal and cutscenes. | Graphics Mode targets 30 fps; Frame-Rate Mode targets 60 fps. The faster mode is not a guarantee of a locked 60 fps. |
| Image quality | The cited tests describe visibly reduced detail and blurry or pixelated cutscenes. The 2024 demo used low settings and upscaling. | Graphics Mode favors higher resolution over Frame-Rate Mode. PlayStation advertises 4K support with a compatible display, but that does not mean all gameplay renders natively at 4K. |
| Play style and features | Portable handheld play is the Deck’s practical distinction. | PlayStation highlights DualSense haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and shorter loading assisted by the PS5 SSD. |
The figures above come from different tests and conditions; they are not a direct benchmark. No source reviewed here measures the same build, scene, settings, and capture process on both platforms.
What Steam Deck performance reports show
2024 demo test: low settings and demanding scenes
In an August 2024 test of the pre-release PC demo, Steam Deck HQ’s Oliver Stogden used 1280×720 resolution, Low settings, and FSR 3 Ultra Performance. He reported that performance reached around 30 fps only some of the time. It fell to around 20 fps or the teens in some particle- or depth-of-field-heavy cutscenes, and to the mid-20s in combat; he also described cutscenes as pixelated and blurry. These results describe that demo and setup, not every later PC build or Steam Deck configuration. Read Steam Deck HQ’s 2024 demo test.
September 2026 test: a reported Verified badge, with drops
In a September 2026 review, Noah Kupetsky reported that the game had recently received the Steam Deck Verified badge. In his test, most battles generally stayed near 30 fps, but traversal fell below 30 fps and as low as 18 fps; some cutscenes fell as low as 13 fps. He also criticized cutscene image quality. This is one reviewer’s experience, not proof of identical results on every Deck or software build. The badge is a compatibility designation, not a promise of stable frame rates in every scene. Which PS5 graphics mode should you choose?
Graphics Mode: prioritize image quality
Graphics Mode targets 30 fps and is the PS5 option to try when image quality matters more than a higher frame-rate target. PlayStation says the game supports 4K resolution with a compatible TV or monitor; the page does not establish that every scene renders natively at 4K. See PlayStation’s PS5 product features.
Frame-Rate Mode: prioritize responsiveness, with compromises
Frame-Rate Mode targets 60 fps, but reported performance is less consistent outside combat, and internal resolution can be reduced during combat. PSFoundry’s technical summary, updated 5 September 2026 and citing earlier Digital Foundry analysis, reports traversal drops below 60 fps and a reduction to 720p internal resolution in combat. Treat those details as an attributed summary: PSFoundry marks build details and some measured values as unverified. Read PSFoundry’s PS5 graphics-mode summary.

Do the Steam Deck Verified badge and updates settle the question?
No. The September 2026 badge report and the reviewer’s observed drops are separate facts: the badge does not mean every scene will hold a particular frame rate. Results can also depend on the PC game build, settings, and the Steam Deck’s software environment.
Square Enix’s PC update log records a stability-focused version 1.01 update dated 26 September 2024, including a fix for frame-rate drops under certain conditions. Version 1.02, dated 17 October 2024, adjusted shadow-quality and graphical-fidelity settings to improve overall PC performance and addressed graphics-display and crash issues on selected hardware setups. The notes do not quantify a Steam Deck frame-rate gain, so they cannot establish that either update fixed the Deck performance described in reviews. Read Square Enix’s PC update notes.

Which version makes sense for you?
- Choose PS5 if you want a living-room presentation with a clear choice between a higher-fidelity 30 fps target and a faster, less consistent 60 fps target. DualSense features and SSD-assisted shorter loading are also part of PlayStation’s listed experience.
- Choose Steam Deck if handheld play is the priority and you are willing to accept the performance and image-quality compromises reported in the cited tests. Those results are useful expectations, not a guarantee for every device or current build.
- Compare carefully if image quality is your deciding factor: the Deck reports reviewed here involve low settings and upscaling, while PS5 supports a higher-resolution mode and 4K output with a compatible display. The available evidence does not quantify a same-scene visual difference.
