Install and update mods using the method supported by the specific game, not by assuming Nexus Mods, Steam Workshop, and CurseForge work the same way. First check the game and mod versions, read the mod’s requirements, and make separate copies of important saves and configuration before changing a working setup. A mod manager or platform screening can help, but neither guarantees that a file is safe or compatible.
Before installing: confirm the game, version, and supported route
Start with the exact game edition and current version you play. Check the game’s documentation to confirm it supports the platform or manager you intend to use. Vortex is for games it supports; Steam Workshop works in games that implement Workshop support; and the cited CurseForge installation guidance applies to Minecraft modpacks, not every game listed on CurseForge.
On the mod’s original platform page, check its supported game versions, dependencies, installation instructions, and update notes. A mod that worked before a game update may no longer be compatible. For example, the Ostranauts modding guide describes a warning when a detected mod targets an older version than the running game. That is an example of one game’s behavior, not a universal warning system.
How to install mods through each platform
Nexus Mods with Vortex
Nexus Mods presents Vortex as a manager for supported games, with features for installing and organizing mods and checking for available updates. Use it only after confirming that your game is supported and that Vortex is managing the correct game instance. Follow the mod’s own installation and dependency instructions; using Vortex does not establish that a downloaded file is safe. See Nexus Mods’ Vortex overview.

Steam Workshop
In a Workshop-enabled game, subscribing to a mod through the Workshop or the game’s own menu is a common installation route. What happens after subscribing—including how downloads and updates are handled—depends on the game. The Ostranauts modding guide, for example, describes subscribing through either route, automatic downloads when updates are available, a list of detected mods, and a warning about older target versions. Follow the current instructions for your game rather than assuming it behaves the same way.
CurseForge for Minecraft modpacks
For a Minecraft modpack, follow the CurseForge installation flow and confirm that the profile, mod loader, and mod files match the pack’s requirements. CurseForge says each Minecraft mod file and profile is associated with a specific Minecraft version. Do not apply those Minecraft-specific instructions to other CurseForge games, or assume they establish a universal update procedure for every pack.

Back up before changing a working setup
Before a substantial mod or game update, make a separate copy of the saves, configuration, and mod data you may need to restore. Check the game’s documentation or settings to find where it stores those files; locations vary by title. Do not assume a platform’s game backup includes them. Steam Support notes that its backup feature excludes saves and custom content for Valve-created games, and says many games using third-party installers or downloaders will not work with the feature. Read Steam’s backup guidance and keep any files it omits separately.
Update mods without losing a working configuration
- Check compatibility again. Before updating, compare the game version, mod version, loader, and dependencies against the mod page and game-specific instructions.
- Read the update notes. Look for changed requirements, removed features, or instructions that affect existing saves and configuration.
- Preserve a recovery copy. Keep the separate backup of relevant saves and files before applying the change.
- Change a small, logical group at a time. This makes it easier to identify a conflict if the game stops loading correctly.
- Test the game before continuing. If it fails to load or behaves unexpectedly, disable the changed mod or restore the relevant backup. The exact rollback steps depend on the game and manager.
Some Workshop games automatically download subscribed mod updates, as Ostranauts’ guide describes. Do not assume every Workshop game offers the same update controls or a way to defer updates; check that game’s current documentation before relying on one.

What platform screening can—and cannot—tell you
Nexus Mods says uploaded content goes through multiple security checks and virus scanning before becoming available. It also warns that antivirus software can flag mod files because some contain code or behavior resembling threats. Treat scanning as a screening measure, not proof that every file is harmless. If your antivirus raises an alert, check the mod’s page and file details and consult credible security guidance; do not dismiss the alert automatically. Moderation can lower exposure without eliminating risk. In its tModLoader announcements, the team described working with Valve on an approval queue intended to catch malicious Workshop items or updates, while acknowledging that mod use carries inherent risk. - Check the mod page, author-provided requirements, and update notes before installing or updating.
- Investigate security alerts rather than blindly ignoring them.
