Choose Performance (Frame Rate) mode if smoother motion and responsive combat matter most; choose Graphics mode if you prefer a sharper image and better shadows. Neither setting is the universal best choice. Final Fantasy XVI’s elaborate action-RPG battles make the difference noticeable, so try your preferred mode and switch if the motion or image quality distracts you.
What changes between Graphics and Performance (Frame Rate) mode?
The tradeoff is image detail versus motion fluidity. In a third-party test of the PS5 version 1.000.002, published by VG Tech on July 1, 2023, Graphics mode used dynamic rendering resolution from 1920×1080 to 3072×1728, with output upscaled to 3840×2160. The test also observed improved shadow quality in Graphics mode.

In the same test, Frame Rate mode used dynamic rendering resolution from 1344×756 to 1920×1080. VG Tech reported that it often stayed near the lower end during combat and switched to the Graphics-mode rendering setup for high-quality real-time cutscenes. Which mode should you choose?
Choose Performance (Frame Rate) mode for combat
Start here if you value fluid motion and responsiveness while fighting. The mode’s lower-resolution rendering path in VG Tech’s test is the tradeoff for its higher-frame-rate aim. If camera movement or fast action looks or feels distracting in Graphics mode, Frame Rate mode is the practical alternative.
Choose Graphics mode for image detail
Pick Graphics mode if you prioritize a sharper presentation and the better shadows observed in the test, and are comfortable with the lower frame-rate target. It suits players who would rather preserve visual detail than prioritize motion fluidity.

Try the other setting if your preference changes
There is no need to treat the first choice as permanent. Play a battle and a quieter scene, then switch modes if the presentation or motion bothers you. The choice is personal; this recommendation follows the documented tradeoff rather than a claim that one mode is best for every player.
What do updates tell us about PS5 performance?
Square Enix’s June 20, 2023 update 1.02 notice said, “This update further optimizes gameplay performance,” and recommended installing the update before playing. Square Enix’s update history also records a frame-rate-drop fix for certain conditions in PC version 1.01, released September 26, 2024. Earlier updates addressed PC demo issues including stuttering, upscaler quality, and graphics settings. Those PC notes should not be read as evidence that the PS5 version received the same fixes. PlayStation describes Final Fantasy XVI as a PS5 game and says its advertised 4K experience requires a compatible 4K TV or monitor. That is a display requirement, not a promise that either mode renders at native 4K. PlayStation’s Final Fantasy XVI page
