You can begin with Cai, Dietrich, Theodora or Leda, switch between their stories, or advance several paths in parallel. Their recruits, discoveries and character development eventually feed into a shared culmination rather than locking you out of a definitive route.
The decisions with the clearest immediate consequences happen during exploration and combat: each protagonist has different development activities, unit placement changes battle outcomes, and Blaze Arts exchange HP for major effects while risking a severe penalty if you overfill the Blaze Gauge.

How the four protagonist paths work
Fortune’s Weave is built around four perspectives in the Dagdan Empire’s capital, Dagsion. The winner of the competition is promised one wish, but the protagonists enter for very different reasons. Cai is trying to uncover the mystery of his birth. Dietrich, who lives for battle, enters after surviving a shipwreck. Theodora wants to fulfill a long-held wish for her people. Leda seeks revenge because the person who killed her father and destroyed her city is still alive in Dagsion.

Each route adds another view of the same larger conflict, and the characters and systems you develop across them contribute to the eventual common goal. The game is a standalone adventure in a world connected to Fire Emblem: Three Houses, but it takes place in a different region and period; it should not be treated as a direct sequel.

Can you choose any route first?
Yes. You can start with any of the four protagonists. You may follow one character for a substantial part of the story, switch when another plot catches your interest, or keep several routes moving together. Producer Genki Yokota says players do not need to worry about making an irreversible choice based on route order.
That means there is no officially established “correct” opening route and no reason to restart simply because you selected a different protagonist first. The order changes the sequence in which you learn information and unlock activities, not whether the other perspectives remain available.
Does route order matter in Fortune’s Weave?
It matters for pacing and perspective, but not as a permanent lockout. Nintendo presents the four protagonists as parts of one converging structure rather than mutually exclusive endings. After you reach a certain point, world-map locations unlocked in one path become available from the start in other paths, reducing repeated travel when you explore a later route.
Because early discoveries can alter how you understand later scenes, players who want the broadest context may prefer to alternate protagonists. Players who value uninterrupted character arcs can stay with one route longer. Neither approach is identified by Nintendo as optimal.
What makes each route different
The routes are not only different viewpoints with interchangeable missions. Each protagonist has a signature activity that changes how you explore, earn resources or develop the party. Nintendo describes these as examples of route-specific play, not a complete list of every activity in the game.

| Protagonist | Motivation | Signature activity | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cai | Investigates the mystery of his birth. | Catches animals that can be ridden and cared for; works fields to harvest and trade goods. | Animal handling and farming add exploration and resource-management options. |
| Dietrich | Lives for battle and enters after surviving a shipwreck. | Earns combat arts by defeating enemies and can strengthen those arts. | Combat performance directly feeds into a growing set of offensive techniques. |
| Theodora | Seeks to fulfill a long-held wish for her people. | Recruits soldiers in settlements and deploys them as battalions. | Settlement relationships expand the forces she can field and coordinate. |
| Leda | Hunts the person who killed her father and destroyed her city. | Performs in taverns while traveling; performances may produce rewards or information about secret locations. | Travel and performance can reveal optional opportunities as well as material benefits. |
These activities give each route a distinct rhythm. Cai’s path emphasizes care, cultivation and trade; Dietrich’s turns victories into martial growth; Theodora’s makes recruitment and battalion deployment central; and Leda’s uses performances as a way to gather leads and rewards. Switching routes therefore changes what you are doing between battles, not merely whose dialogue you read.
What carries over between routes?
Character development can merge
Nintendo says character data can merge across playthroughs. Its example is a protagonist developed toward magic in one run and melee combat in another: strengths from both versions can be retained when the development is combined. If a character is recruited and developed in two different routes, the versions’ stats can also be merged.

A second pass can add a different build to a character you already know, allowing the accumulated version to reflect multiple approaches. The system is designed so that trying a new path can broaden a character instead of discarding earlier work.
Route features can become shared tools
Some route-specific features can become available in other paths. Nintendo gives Cai’s animal feature as an example. In practical terms, an activity introduced through one protagonist can later support exploration elsewhere, so the value of completing a route is not confined to that route’s original chapters.
World-map access is eased after progression
Once you reach the relevant point in the story, locations unlocked on the world map in one path are available from the start in other paths. This prevents every protagonist from having to rebuild the same travel access and makes a multi-route playthrough more efficient.

Can you replay chapters and retry decisions?
Fortune’s Weave uses one save file with preserved chapter-start data for each main protagonist. Nintendo says this lets you jump back to replay a chapter, inspect maps or cutscenes, and retry battles. The structure is meant for a game with multiple routes and accumulated progress, not for maintaining isolated save files that cannot share development.
The replay system also reduces the pressure around imperfect choices. Nintendo says there are no permanently missable elements and encourages players to continue instead of assuming they must reset immediately. You can return to earlier chapter data when you want to examine another approach, while your broader progression continues to accumulate.
This does not mean every scene has a documented alternate ending. Official developer material establishes the route framework and replay systems, but it does not publish a complete dialogue-choice or ending-branch guide. Treat claims that a particular early response guarantees a named ending with caution unless they are supported by an in-game or official source.
Which battle choices have tangible consequences?
Positioning and matchups
Combat is turn-based tactical RPG play. Unit placement, distance, attack reach and matchups determine whether an action is safe, efficient or exposed. Coordination with allies matters, and some battles add special rules or terrain that change the value of a familiar formation.
A strong turn is therefore more than selecting the unit with the highest displayed attack. Before committing, check who can reach the target, which enemy can retaliate, whether an ally can support the move and how the terrain affects the exchange. A technically powerful unit can still be the wrong choice if its position leaves it surrounded or outside follow-up range.

What do Blaze Arts do?
Certain heroes can use Blaze Arts, signature techniques that vary by character. They may deliver powerful attacks or provide support effects, but they cost HP. The cost is part of the decision: using an art can solve an immediate tactical problem while making that hero more vulnerable on the following turns.
Every Blaze Art also fills the Blaze Gauge. At the halfway point, the gauge grants a power boost. Filling it completely triggers a Burst: the bonuses end and the hero’s maximum HP is cut in half. The strongest-looking use can therefore create a worse position if it pushes the gauge all the way to maximum without a plan for the reduced survivability.
Think of the gauge as a risk track rather than a simple meter to fill. Spending HP for an art is attractive when it prevents a defeat, breaks a dangerous formation or provides essential support. If the same action would complete the gauge immediately before an enemy phase, save it or choose a different unit unless the resulting Burst is worth the loss of maximum HP.
Limited turn rewinds
The game includes a limited number of turn rewinds. They are intended for testing a different strategy after a positioning mistake, an unexpected matchup or an overly risky Blaze Art. Because the supply is limited, use a rewind for a consequential error rather than routinely undoing every imperfect attack.
When a rewind is available, reassess the whole turn: movement, target selection, ally coordination and gauge state. Repeating the same action usually repeats the same danger; changing the order of actions can preserve HP or prevent a Burst.

A practical way to plan a multi-route playthrough
- Pick the protagonist whose motivation interests you most. There is no irreversible opening choice, so begin with the character whose perspective you want to learn first.
- Use the signature activity instead of treating it as optional flavor. Farm and trade with Cai, develop combat arts with Dietrich, recruit and deploy battalions with Theodora, and perform with Leda to pursue rewards or secret-location information.
- Switch when another route offers useful context. Alternating paths can reveal parallel perspectives sooner, while staying on one route preserves narrative momentum. Both approaches are supported.
- Check shared access after major progress. Newly available world-map locations and route features can reduce the amount of repeated exploration on subsequent paths.
- Replay from chapter-start data when a battle or build deserves another attempt. Review maps, cutscenes or battles without treating the entire campaign as disposable.
- Build with the merged result in mind. A second route can add complementary development to a character, including different magical or melee strengths, rather than replacing the first version outright.
- Reserve Blaze Arts for a tactical purpose. Account for the HP payment, the halfway gauge boost and the full-gauge Burst before activating one.
What is known—and not established—about endings
The confirmed structure is convergence: four protagonists and their recruited allies move toward a common goal, with experiences accumulating across routes. The developers’ language supports the idea that everything the player does has value. Director Toshiyuki Kusakihara described “things converging into one” as a core story concept and said that, in gameplay, everything players experience has value.
That statement does not identify a preferred route order, a hidden “true” route or exact dialogue outcomes. The available official descriptions do not document every branch, choice result or ending condition. Consequently, the safest spoiler-conscious expectation is that route selection changes the perspective and sequence of your journey while the larger structure brings the paths together.
Producer Genki Yokota also addressed the fear of making a mistake. He noted that characters may fall in battle and that some situations have no perfect solution, but said players can recover later. Alongside chapter replay, turn rewinds and the absence of permanently missable elements, that design encourages experimentation rather than constant resetting.
Bottom line for your choices
Choose your first protagonist for story preference, not fear of losing content. Switch whenever another perspective or activity appeals to you, because the routes are designed to accumulate into a shared progression. Replay chapters to test alternate builds or tactics, and treat combat decisions—especially positioning, HP-spending Blaze Arts and gauge management—as the places where short-term consequences are most pronounced.
