Its item entry lists it as common, weighing 1 kg (2 lb) and worth 5 gp. It can appear as set-dressing or random loot, but the cited item entry does not name a guaranteed pickup location.
Can you use the Fishing Rod to fish in BG3?
The ordinary rod’s documented use is to barter with or sell to a trader. The item entry does not identify a fishing action or mechanic, so finding one does not mean your character can use it to catch fish.
Larian’s Patch 3 notes, published 22 September 2023, mention environmental detail at the Emerald Grove: “Added some environmental detail and lowered a floating bucket of fish and fishing rod at the Emerald Grove.” That note describes a scene placement; it does not establish a general fishing mechanic.

Where can you find the ordinary Fishing Rod?
The item entry says rods may be found throughout the game as set-dressing and random loot. It does not give a single guaranteed location or promise that a rod will appear in a particular playthrough. Larian’s Emerald Grove patch note is one official example of a rod placed as environmental detail, rather than evidence of a usable fishing activity.

How is Fishing Rod of Alertness different?
Fishing Rod of Alertness is a separate, uncommon miscellaneous item. The community-maintained item entry, accessed 8 October 2026, lists it at 1 kg (2 lb) and 55 gp, and says Mattis sells it at Last Light Inn. Its description claims, “The wielder of this rod cannot be Surprised, unless something unexpected happens.” The same entry cautions that the effect does not actually prevent the wielder from being Surprised, so do not rely on it as dependable protection.
| Item | Listed rarity and value | Documented use or effect | Acquisition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fishing Rod | Common; 5 gp | Barter or sale | Set-dressing and random loot; no guaranteed location stated |
| Fishing Rod of Alertness | Uncommon; 55 gp | Described as preventing Surprise, but the item entry says the effect does not work | Sold by Mattis at Last Light Inn |
The listed properties above come from community-maintained item entries, not an official Larian item database; they may warrant rechecking for a later game patch or platform build.
