This guide explains the settings that affect connectivity, listing, OneSync, resources, permissions, security, and txAdmin, with a safe baseline configuration and a troubleshooting path.
What server.cfg is and when FXServer reads it
FXServer receives server.cfg through the +exec startup argument. A standard Linux launch from the official layout is:

bash ~/FXServer/server/run.sh +exec server.cfgCommands and convars can also be entered in the server console, through RCon, from the command line, or by an ACL-permitted resource. A convar is a named configuration value that resources can read or set. Put quotation marks around values containing spaces, such as a server name or description.
The file is evaluated from top to bottom. That makes placement significant when one setting depends on another, when an included file changes a value, or when a resource must start after its dependency. Keep a copy of the exact file passed to +exec; editing a different directory is a common reason changes appear to have no effect.

A minimal public configuration
The following is a starting point, not a complete production file. Replace the license key, names, and resource list with values appropriate to your server.

endpoint_add_tcp
endpoint_add_tcp binds a TCP listening endpoint. The address and port must be valid, and the port must not already be occupied:
endpoint_add_tcp "0.0.0.0:30120"endpoint_add_udp
endpoint_add_udp binds the corresponding UDP endpoint:
endpoint_add_udp "0.0.0.0:30120"0.0.0.0 listens on the host’s available network interfaces. Bind to a specific local address only when a machine has multiple interfaces and you deliberately want to restrict which one accepts traffic. The familiar port 30120 is an example, not a requirement; use the port assigned by your provider or the one selected for your installation. Open and forward that port in the host firewall, cloud firewall, and router as applicable. The exact procedure varies by operating system and provider. TCP and UDP both need to be allowed, and another process cannot already be using either binding.

License, browser identity, and LAN mode
sv_licenseKey
sv_licenseKey authenticates the server with the Cfx.re platform:
sv_licenseKey "YOUR_KEY"Create the key in the Cfx.re portal and keep it secret. If a server starts without a valid key, startup will fail or public operation will not work as expected.
sv_hostname, sv_projectName, and sv_projectDesc
These values control the identity shown to players and in server listings:
sv_hostname "My FiveM Server"
sets sv_projectName "My Project"
sets sv_projectDesc "A short sentence about the community"Use a stable, recognizable hostname and a description that accurately states the server’s gameplay or community focus. The sets form stores project metadata as convars; avoid putting secrets or personal data in these fields.
sv_lan
Set sv_lan true for a LAN-only server. In that mode the server does not operate as a normal public listing and skips the usual public-listing/license checks described by the command reference. Remove the line or set it to false when you intend to accept players over the internet.

Player slots and OneSync
Choose the desired capacity first, then select a synchronization mode that supports it and the scripts you run. Increasing the slot number does not by itself provide enough CPU, memory, bandwidth, or script performance for a larger population.

sv_maxClients accepts an integer from 1 through 2048 in the current 2026 Cfx.re command reference:

These are configuration requirements, not a promise of stable gameplay at every value. If players cannot join beyond a low limit, inspect both sv_maxClients and the active OneSync mode, then check server performance and resource design.
Game build selection
sv_enforceGameBuild selects the GTA game build that the server enforces. It matters when a map, vehicle, script, or other resource depends on DLC or newer game content. Use a build supported by the artifacts and resources you actually run; do not copy a number from an unrelated tutorial. Verify the current Cfx.re command reference and the compatibility notes for your resources before changing it. A mismatch can produce missing assets, script errors, or clients being refused for using an incompatible build.

Resource startup and ensure order
ensure resource_name starts a resource if it is stopped and restarts it when an administrator issues a resource restart command. Resource names must match their folder names, and the folder must contain a valid manifest such as fxmanifest.lua where required.

Default resources
The official vanilla example includes:
ensure mapmanager
ensure chat
ensure spawnmanager
ensure sessionmanager
ensure basic-gamemode
ensure hardcap
ensure rconlogThese are defaults, not a mandatory production stack. A framework may replace some of them or require additional resources.
A dependable loading sequence
- Start with core services and the resources they explicitly require.
- Load the framework and its dependencies.
- Add maps, vehicles, gameplay scripts, and optional utilities.
- After each addition, read the resource manifest and startup documentation and watch the console for dependency or export errors.
When a resource fails, confirm the folder name, manifest, dependency folders, and the order of the corresponding ensure lines. txAdmin recipes can add their own entries, so review those entries before duplicating or removing them.
Permissions and ACE access control
FiveM’s ACE system grants permissions to principals (such as player identifiers) and groups. A common setup pattern is:
add_principal identifier.fivem:1 group.admin
add_ace group.admin command allowThe identifier and group must match the access model used by your server. A broad command allow grants every command permission to that group, so reserve it for a small set of trusted administrators. For larger teams, grant only the commands each role needs and add individual principals to the appropriate groups. Test with a non-owner account before relying on the rules for moderation or emergency recovery.
Security and privacy controls
sv_scriptHookAllowed
sv_scriptHookAllowed 0The default value disables permission for ScriptHook-based plugins. It is a server-side allowance, not a guarantee that every external plugin or modified client is impossible; use it alongside normal administrative and anti-cheat practices.

sv_endpointPrivacy
sv_endpointPrivacy trueWhen true, this hides player IP addresses from public reports generated by the server. It does not remove the need to protect logs and access credentials on the host.
Secrets
Protect the license key, database passwords, RCon password, API tokens, and provider credentials. Store sensitive values in files with restricted permissions or in provider-managed secret settings. If you request support, redact secrets while leaving the relevant non-secret lines intact; publishing a complete configuration can expose credentials and administrative access.
RCon and split configuration files
RCon
RCon permits remote console administration. Leave it disabled unless you have a specific operational need. If enabled, use a long, unique password and restrict network exposure with the host or provider firewall. The vanilla example leaves the line commented until an administrator intentionally enables it; follow that approach rather than enabling remote access by default.
exec includes
Use exec another-file.cfg to divide a large configuration into maintainable files:
exec permissions.cfg
exec resources.cfgIncluded files are part of the effective configuration. Keep them in protected locations, record their order, and inspect every included file when troubleshooting. A value changed in an included file can override assumptions made from the main file alone.

txAdmin is bundled with FXServer builds above 2524 and provides a web panel with a CFG editor and validator, start/stop/restart controls, and moderation features. Use its editor to validate syntax and manage the game server, but keep the configuration boundary clear.

Current txAdmin documentation uses TXHOST_* environment variables for the v8 host configuration. The txAdminPort, txAdminInterface, and txDataPath convars are deprecated. Do not add those deprecated panel convars to a new file without checking the release notes for the txAdmin version you are running.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Confirm the launch path. Start FXServer from the directory containing the intended file and verify that
+exec server.cfgappears in the launch command. - Validate both endpoints. Check TCP and UDP syntax, the provider-assigned port, firewall rules, router forwarding where applicable, and whether another process already owns the port.
- Check authentication safely. Confirm that
sv_licenseKeyis present and valid, but redact it from screenshots and logs. - Investigate listing problems. Review
sv_hostname, project fields, accidentalsv_lan true, endpoint reachability, and startup errors. - Investigate slot limits. Compare
sv_maxClientswith the OneSync threshold table and verify the activeonesyncmode. - Investigate resource failures. Check the folder name, manifest, dependencies, ensure order, and any recipe-generated entries.
- Use txAdmin carefully. Run its CFG validator, then keep panel host settings in the current txAdmin environment configuration rather than copying deprecated convars into the game configuration.
Safe editing habits
- Make one logical change at a time and restart or resource-restart only what is needed.
- Keep dated backups of the working file and every file referenced by
exec. - Use plain text and preserve quotation marks around values with spaces.
- Comment why a non-obvious setting exists, especially a custom port, game build, or compatibility mode.
- After a framework or artifact update, re-check manifests, dependencies, OneSync requirements, and txAdmin guidance rather than assuming an old file remains correct.
