For most new WordPress sites, open Settings → Permalinks, choose Post name, and click Save Changes. This creates short, readable URLs such as /how-to-set-up-permalinks/. On an established site, do not switch structures casually: map the old URLs, create permanent redirects, update dependent references, and test representative pages before and after the change.

What an SEO-friendly permalink is
A permalink is the durable URL assigned to a WordPress post, page, category, or other piece of content. WordPress describes Pretty Permalinks as attractive and SEO-friendly because words in a URL are easier for people and search engines to understand than an opaque query string or an unexplained numeric identifier.

Google Search Central similarly recommends a simple URL structure, logical organization, descriptive words instead of long ID numbers, and language that matches the audience. These recommendations improve clarity and help search systems interpret a site; they are not a promise of a particular ranking increase. A readable URL is one part of a well-organized site, not a substitute for useful content or sound technical SEO.
A good permalink normally has four qualities:
- Readable: a person can tell what the page covers without decoding an ID.
- Descriptive: the words reflect the page rather than a temporary internal label.
- Logical: related content follows a structure visitors can understand.
- Durable: the address is unlikely to change when you edit or reorganize the site.
WordPress treats permalinks as permanent addresses. That makes the choice most important before a site has accumulated published pages, internal links, search listings, campaign links, and external references.

Set the permalink structure in WordPress
The native WordPress procedure takes only a few minutes. You do not need an SEO plugin to choose the site-wide permalink format.
- Sign in to the WordPress dashboard.
- Open Settings → Permalinks.
- Review the available common settings: Plain, Day and name, Month and name, Numeric, and Post name. The screen also provides a Custom structure field.
- For a typical new blog, publication, or business site, select Post name.
- Click Save Changes. Do this even when the visible selection appears unchanged; saving refreshes WordPress’s rewrite rules.
With Post name selected, a post titled “How to Set Up Permalinks” can use a slug such as /how-to-set-up-permalinks/. The slug is the editable, post-specific part of the URL. Keep it concise and accurately descriptive rather than copying every word from a long headline.

Which WordPress permalink structure should you use?
There is no universal format for every publication. The right choice depends on whether dates or categories are meaningful to readers, how stable your taxonomy is, and whether the site already has a large set of published URLs.

Why Post name is the practical default
Post name usually gives an evergreen article the shortest meaningful address. It avoids locking the URL to a publication date and does not change merely because you reorganize categories. A reader can infer the subject from the slug, and the format is easy to share or copy.
Post name is not automatically good, however. A slug such as /p=1847/ is not descriptive, while a slug containing a very long headline, repeated filler words, or a temporary campaign phrase is difficult to maintain. Edit the slug to express the stable topic, then avoid changing it after publication unless there is a compelling reason.
When a date belongs in the URL
Day and name or Month and name can make sense for a publication whose archive is fundamentally chronological, such as time-sensitive news. The date helps a reader distinguish entries in that archive. It also increases URL length and may work against clarity when an old post is extensively revised but retains its original address.

Choose a date structure because the date is meaningful to the audience, not because you expect the date itself to improve search performance. If your site publishes durable tutorials, reference pages, or product documentation, a date often adds information that visitors do not need.
Why category-based patterns need caution
A custom pattern that includes %category% can communicate hierarchy, but it couples every post URL to its category. Changing a category name or moving a post can then change the address. A post assigned to more than one category also creates a management question: which category should appear in the canonical URL?
Use category in a permalink only when the taxonomy is stable, meaningful, and maintained as part of the site’s information architecture. Do not add it simply to make a URL look more organized. If the category system is likely to evolve, Post name is generally more durable.
Use custom structures deliberately
WordPress supports structure tags including %year%, %monthnum%, %day%, %postname%, and %category%. A custom pattern should answer a reader’s navigation question or enforce a stable editorial rule. Every additional tag makes the address longer and creates another dependency that must be preserved during a redesign or migration.
Before saving a custom pattern, write down:
- Which parts of the URL a visitor genuinely needs to understand the content.
- Which parts will remain true if the post is updated, recategorized, or moved.
- How editors will create consistent slugs for future posts.
- How you will redirect existing URLs if the pattern replaces an established one.
A pattern containing only the post name is often easier to maintain than one that exposes several changing editorial fields. The technically available tag is not automatically a reason to use it.
Write stable, readable post slugs
The site-wide setting controls the pattern; each post’s slug controls the final descriptive words. When drafting a new page:

- Identify the page’s durable subject rather than its temporary headline or campaign wording.
- Use ordinary words that match the language your audience uses.
- Remove unnecessary repetition and avoid turning the slug into a full sentence.
- Check the resulting URL in the editor before publishing.
- Once the page has been shared or indexed, leave the slug in place unless a change fixes a serious problem.
For example, /how-to-set-up-permalinks/ communicates the topic directly. A numeric address or one containing an internal database ID does not. The objective is comprehension and durability, not inserting every possible keyword.
Changing permalinks on an established site
Changing the setting on a mature site is a migration, not a cosmetic preference. Existing links can point to the old addresses, and search systems or campaign materials may continue to request them. Plan the change before selecting a new option.

Compile the published URLs that matter to readers and the business: high-traffic articles, landing pages, category pages, pages used in email or campaigns, and addresses referenced by other sites. The inventory should pair each old URL with the exact new destination, not merely with the site’s home page.
2. Choose the destination structure
Decide whether the new pattern is truly more durable and understandable. If the change only makes URLs look different without solving a structural problem, postponing it may be safer. Confirm that categories, dates, and slug rules will remain stable after the migration.
3. Create permanent redirects
Before switching the setting, prepare a permanent redirect from every important old URL to its corresponding new URL. A redirect that sends visitors to the specific replacement preserves a better experience than sending every request to a generic page. Learn WordPress specifically recommends redirecting old links when changing an established structure.
4. Update references that you control
Revise internal links so they point directly to the new addresses. Regenerate or update the XML sitemap, check canonical references, and replace old URLs in newsletters, documentation, advertising, social profiles, and other campaign links. Redirects protect visitors who still use an old address, but direct references reduce unnecessary hops and make future maintenance clearer.

5. Switch and save
Open Settings → Permalinks, select the new structure, and click Save Changes. Saving refreshes WordPress’s rewrite rules. Do not assume that merely selecting an option has applied the change.
6. Test representative destinations
Open old URLs and confirm that each reaches the intended new page. Test new URLs directly, including a post, a page, a category archive, and any custom content types your site uses. Check the HTTP status and the final destination, not just whether a browser displays something. Review internal links and the XML sitemap for stale addresses.

A 404 after selecting Post name or another Pretty Permalink format usually means that WordPress’s rewrite rules were not refreshed or that the web server is not configured to translate clean URLs into WordPress requests.
Refresh WordPress rewrite rules first
- Go to Settings → Permalinks.
- Leave the intended structure selected.
- Click Save Changes, even if no option changed.
- Open a newly published post and a previously published post to test both routes.
This action refreshes the rewrite rules without requiring you to redesign the URL pattern.

Check Apache or Nginx support
Clean URLs require compatible rewrite configuration on the host. Learn WordPress identifies server rewrite support as part of the Pretty Permalink setup. If saving the settings does not resolve the 404, ask the hosting provider to verify the Apache or Nginx rewrite configuration and relevant file permissions.
Do not repeatedly switch between structures as a troubleshooting method. Each change can create more confusion about which URLs should resolve and which redirects are required. First establish whether the server is processing WordPress rewrites correctly.

Separate a rewrite failure from a missing page
If every Pretty Permalink fails, including a brand-new test post, the problem points toward rewrite handling or configuration. If only one address fails, inspect that post’s slug, publication status, and redirect mapping. A redirect to a deleted or incorrect destination is a migration problem, not evidence that another permalink structure is inherently better.
Validation checklist after setup or migration
- Confirm the intended option is selected under Settings → Permalinks.
- Click Save Changes and verify that a representative post opens at its expected URL.
- Check that the slug uses readable, audience-appropriate words.
- Test old URLs if the site was migrated and confirm each permanent redirect reaches the matching new page.
- Review internal links, XML sitemaps, canonical references, and external campaign links for old addresses.
- Test representative post, page, and archive URLs for both status-code correctness and destination accuracy.
- If clean links still return 404 errors, have the host verify Apache or Nginx rewrite support and file permissions.
Common permalink mistakes
Changing URLs casually
Renaming a slug or changing the global pattern after publication can break bookmarks, internal links, campaign URLs, and external references. Treat a permalink as a durable address and change it only with a mapped redirect plan.

A date can make an evergreen guide look old or become inaccurate after a substantial update. Use a date only when chronological context is genuinely useful to readers.
Building a URL around an unstable category tree
Category names and assignments often evolve. If they appear in the URL, those editorial changes can become URL changes. Use a category-based pattern only when the taxonomy is stable and meaningful.
Assuming the setting alone improves rankings
Readable URLs help users and search systems understand a page, but the available guidance does not establish a universal ranking boost from changing the permalink option. Make the decision for clarity, organization, and long-term URL management.
Skipping the Save Changes action
The setting screen is also the place where WordPress refreshes rewrite rules. Leaving without saving can leave clean links unresolved even when the desired option appears selected.
Recommended decision framework
- Is the site new? Choose Post name unless publication dates are central to the archive or a documented custom architecture requires another pattern.
- Is the site established? Keep the current structure unless the benefits justify a migration. Inventory URLs and prepare redirects before switching.
- Are dates part of the reader’s decision? Consider Day and name or Month and name; otherwise avoid adding them to durable content.
- Is the category system stable? Only then consider including
%category%in a custom pattern. - Do Pretty Permalinks return 404 errors? Save the Permalinks settings to refresh rules, then have the host check Apache or Nginx rewrite support and file permissions.
For most new WordPress sites, Post name provides the clearest balance of short URLs, descriptive language, and resistance to routine editorial changes. The more established the site, the more important migration discipline becomes: preserve old addresses with permanent redirects, update every reference you control, and verify the actual destinations after the switch.
