The “This application requires DX11, no valid device found!” error means CS2 cannot create a usable Direct3D 11 graphics device. The cause is usually one of four things: the GPU does not expose the required feature level, the display driver is missing or damaged, a laptop selected the wrong GPU, or a launch option or game file is interfering with startup.

Do not assume that a DxDiag report showing “DirectX 12” means the computer can run CS2. The DirectX version reported by Windows, the graphics driver, and the GPU’s hardware feature levels are related but different. Counter-Strike 2 requires a video card compatible with DirectX 11 and Shader Model 5.0; its minimum requirement is a 1 GB-or-larger video card with that support.
Work through the checks below in order. The first step tells you whether this is a software problem that may be repairable or a hardware limitation that software cannot fix.

1. Check the GPU’s DirectX feature levels in DxDiag
Windows includes DirectX Diagnostic Tool, or DxDiag, which shows the active graphics adapter, driver information, and supported feature levels.
- Press the Windows key and type
dxdiag. - Open DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
- On the System tab, note the Windows version and the DirectX version reported by Windows.
- Open the Display tab. On some systems, especially systems with hybrid graphics, you may also see a Render tab.
- Record the adapter name, driver model, driver date, driver version, and the complete Feature Levels line.
The key evidence is the adapter’s Feature Levels, not merely the DirectX version on the System tab. A compatible active adapter should expose Feature Level 11_0 or higher for CS2’s Direct3D 11 requirement. If the selected adapter exposes only lower feature levels, the game cannot create the required device on that GPU.
Save the DxDiag report with Save All Information if you need to share the result with technical support. If you ask for help, include the GPU name, Feature Levels, driver version, Windows version, and whether the computer is a laptop or desktop.
Why “DirectX 12” in DxDiag is not enough
DirectX feature levels are defined sets of graphics functionality supported by a GPU and its driver. The API version reported by Windows does not guarantee that every installed adapter can provide every feature level. Device creation can fail when the hardware or driver cannot satisfy the feature-level list requested by a game.
Consequently, reinstalling a newer DirectX runtime will not add missing hardware capability. If the active GPU lacks Feature Level 11_0, the problem is not that Windows needs to be upgraded from DirectX 12 to DirectX 11; the GPU or its driver is not providing the capability CS2 needs.
2. Update or reinstall the correct graphics driver
If DxDiag shows a suitable feature level, the driver may be missing, corrupt, outdated, incompatible, or replaced by a generic Windows display driver.
- Install available updates through Settings > Windows Update.
- Check Advanced options > Optional updates for display-driver updates, where available.
- If Windows Update does not provide a suitable driver, download one from the GPU manufacturer or, for a laptop, the computer manufacturer’s support page.
- Install the driver and restart Windows before testing CS2 again.
Identify the actual GPU first so you do not install a driver for the wrong adapter. Common sources include the official NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel support pages and the laptop manufacturer’s support page. On some laptops, both the integrated and discrete GPU drivers are needed for the hybrid graphics system to function correctly.

If the error appeared immediately after a driver update, testing the previous manufacturer-supported driver can be a useful diagnostic step. The exact rollback procedure and safest driver version depend on the computer and GPU, so do not assume that any older driver is appropriate.
Driver-maintenance software may help identify a missing or conflicting display driver, but it cannot add DirectX 11 feature support to a GPU that does not have it. Avoid unofficial driver-download mirrors.
3. Force CS2 to use the dedicated GPU on a laptop
Gaming laptops often contain an integrated GPU and a more powerful discrete GPU. Windows may assign CS2 to the integrated adapter, or the selected adapter may have a driver problem. Assigning the game to the high-performance GPU is therefore a useful test when DxDiag lists more than one adapter.
Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Under the application list, find Counter-Strike 2. If it is not listed, add the CS2 executable with Browse.
- Select CS2 and choose Options.
- Select High performance, then choose Save.
- Close and restart the game.
Windows controls per-application GPU preferences on modern Windows systems and can override an older preference configured only in the NVIDIA Control Panel. If changing the NVIDIA setting alone has no effect, set the preference in Windows Graphics settings as well.

On a desktop with both motherboard and graphics-card video outputs, make sure the monitor cable is connected to the dedicated graphics card. This is a hardware-connection check rather than a guaranteed CS2-specific fix, but a cable connected to the motherboard can leave the system using the integrated graphics path.
4. Remove every custom Steam launch option
Custom launch parameters can alter how CS2 initializes graphics. For diagnosis, return the game to a clean launch configuration.
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click Counter-Strike 2 and choose Properties.
- Stay on the General tab and inspect Launch Options.
- Delete every option so the field is completely blank.
- Close the Properties window and launch CS2 again.
A Steam Community report associated with this exact error says that removing launch options resolved the problem. That is anecdotal evidence, not an official Valve diagnosis, so treat it as a low-risk isolation test rather than a guaranteed fix.

Do not respond by adding random flags such as -dx11, -vulkan, or -autoconfig. A parameter that helps one configuration can cause trouble on another, and adding more flags can hide the original problem. If CS2 starts after the field is cleared, add options back one at a time until you identify the conflicting parameter.

Damaged or incomplete local files can prevent normal startup, particularly after an interrupted update, crash, or manual file change. Steam’s verification tool checks the installation and replaces incorrect local content where necessary.
- Restart Steam.
- Open Library and right-click Counter-Strike 2.
- Choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish, then restart Steam and test CS2.
Verification repairs game content; it does not upgrade the graphics hardware. If DxDiag shows that the active adapter lacks the required feature level, reinstalling CS2 will not make that adapter compatible.
6. Decide whether the GPU is actually unsupported
At this point, use the result of the DxDiag check to choose the correct path:

If the correct driver is installed, the intended adapter is selected, launch options are blank, Steam verification succeeds, and the active GPU still lacks Feature Level 11_0, you have a hardware-capability gap. A driver or DirectX download cannot create features that the GPU does not support.
When a graphics-card upgrade is the only practical fix
If your current adapter fails the feature-level check, look for a DirectX 11-compatible graphics card that also supports Shader Model 5.0 and meets CS2’s stated minimum requirement. Confirm those specifications before buying; do not choose a card solely because its product page mentions a newer DirectX API.
Before purchasing, check:
- the manufacturer’s stated DirectX feature-level and Shader Model support;
- the power supply’s wattage and available PCIe power connectors;
- the card’s length, height, and slot clearance in the case;
- compatibility with the motherboard and operating system;
- available monitor connectors and your intended resolution;
- whether the CPU and RAM are sufficient for the experience you want.
CS2’s minimum requirement establishes launch compatibility, not a guaranteed frame rate, resolution, refresh rate, or competitive-play experience. A card that technically meets the minimum may still require reduced settings and may not deliver the smoothness a high-refresh-rate player expects.

Fixes that will not reliably solve “no valid device found”
- Installing DirectX 12 again: the Windows API label does not prove that the selected GPU exposes the required feature level.
- Reinstalling CS2 before checking DxDiag: a clean game installation cannot upgrade an unsupported GPU.
- Adding random launch flags: remove options while diagnosing instead of accumulating unverified parameters.
- Using a driver utility as a hardware substitute: software can identify or update a driver, but it cannot add missing GPU capabilities.
- Assuming the integrated GPU is sufficient: a hybrid laptop may need CS2 assigned to its dedicated adapter.

- Open DxDiag and inspect the active adapter’s Feature Levels.
- If Feature Level 11_0 is absent, install the correct driver and check whether another adapter is available.
- If the level remains absent, plan for compatible hardware rather than more DirectX downloads.

Does seeing DirectX 12 in DxDiag mean CS2 should run?
