Fix Cyberduck’s SFTP “EOF While Reading Packet” Error

Cyberduck’s EOF error means the remote server closed the SFTP channel before sending the expected packet. This guide walks through endpoint, account, log, OpenSSH subsystem, package, and shell checks.

Cyberduck’s EOF while reading packet message usually means the remote server closed the SFTP channel before sending the packet Cyberduck expected. It is normally a server, account, or SFTP-subsystem problem—not a damaged download. Confirm that you are using the provider’s SFTP endpoint, verify that the account is entitled to SSH/SFTP access, and have the administrator inspect the server logs at the exact time of a failed connection.

What “EOF while reading packet” means

EOF means “end of file.” In this context, Cyberduck is reading the encrypted SFTP stream and reaches the end because the other side has hung up. The client is waiting for an SFTP protocol packet; instead, the server closes the session.

Cyberduck maintainer dkocher describes the situation plainly in an official support ticket: “The server is hanging up the connection. Can you please ask your hosting provider or peek into server logs.” That diagnosis is important because changing a local download folder, repeatedly reinstalling Cyberduck, or assuming a corrupt transfer does not address the event that produced the error.

The disconnect can happen at different points. A host may reject the account before an SFTP subsystem starts, accept the password but fail to launch SFTP, or terminate the channel because a shell, startup file, policy, or server binary is misconfigured. A successful SSH login therefore does not prove that SFTP is available for the same account.

Start with this five-minute triage

  1. Identify the protocol. Open the Cyberduck bookmark and make sure its protocol is SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol), not FTP, FTPS, or WebDAV.
  2. Use the right endpoint and port. Enter the SFTP hostname supplied by your host and its documented SSH port. FTP working on port 21 says nothing about whether SFTP is enabled on the SSH endpoint.
  3. Check entitlement and password state. Ask whether this exact user has SSH/SFTP access. Confirm that the password has not expired and that the SSH account has not been disabled.
  4. Reproduce once and record evidence. Note the UTC time, username, source IP address, hostname, and port. Avoid dozens of retries that make log correlation harder.
  5. Send the timestamp to the administrator. Ask the hosting provider or server administrator to inspect SSH authentication and SFTP-subsystem logs for that attempt.

If the provider manages the server, steps three and five usually resolve the issue faster than changing Cyberduck settings. If you administer the machine, continue with the subsystem, package, and shell checks below.

1. Confirm that Cyberduck is targeting SFTP

Create or edit the bookmark and verify every connection field against the provider’s documentation:

  • Protocol: SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol).
  • Server: the provider’s SFTP or SSH hostname, not an FTP-only hostname.
  • Port: the provider’s stated SSH/SFTP port. Port 22 is common, but a managed service may use another value.
  • Username: the account for which SSH/SFTP access was granted.
  • Password or key: the current credential associated with that account.

An FTP bookmark can continue to work on port 21 while the corresponding SSH service is disabled, restricted to another hostname, or unavailable to your user. Do not infer SFTP availability from an FTP login.

When a provider supplies a separate “SFTP host,” use that exact name. DNS aliases, control-panel addresses, and website hostnames can point to different services or policies. If the provider gives a nonstandard port, enter it explicitly rather than relying on Cyberduck’s default.

2. Verify account authorization and credential status

Ask the host one focused question: “Is SSH/SFTP enabled for this username, on this hostname and port?” Providers sometimes create an FTP account without granting shell or SFTP access. Cyberduck’s related interoperability tickets direct users to have the hosting provider enable SFTP for the account or change the password.

Have the provider check these account conditions:

  • The user is permitted to use SSH/SFTP rather than FTP only.
  • The account is active and has not been suspended, locked, or disabled for SSH.
  • The password is current and has not expired.
  • Any required IP allowlist, two-factor requirement, chroot policy, or connection limit permits your source address.
  • The account’s home directory and storage quota are valid.

Published troubleshooting reports include expired passwords and disabled SSH accounts that produced an apparent SFTP failure. Resetting a password can help when the provider identifies an expired credential, but do not treat a reset as a universal fix: the server can authenticate a user and still fail when it starts the SFTP subsystem.

3. Use server logs as the deciding evidence

Provider logs are the fastest way to distinguish an authorization problem from an SFTP-startup problem. Reproduce the failure once, then give the administrator:

  • UTC timestamp, including seconds if available;
  • username;
  • destination hostname and port;
  • your public source IP address;
  • Cyberduck’s exact error text; and
  • whether a normal SSH session succeeds.

Ask for both the SSH authentication log and the SFTP-subsystem or session log. An authentication entry can show a successful password while a later line records failure to execute the SFTP server, a forced-command rejection, a missing binary, an expired account, or an immediate session close.

Do not paste private keys, passwords, or complete sensitive log files into a public forum. Send only the relevant timestamped lines through the provider’s support channel. If the host will not disclose logs, ask support to confirm which of the following occurred: authentication denied, account policy rejection, subsystem launch failure, shell/startup failure, or administrative disconnect.

4. Check the SFTP subsystem on a self-managed Linux or Unix host

On a server you administer, inspect the SSH daemon configuration, commonly /etc/ssh/sshd_config. The Subsystem sftp directive must reference an SFTP implementation that actually exists on the system, or use the built-in implementation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Subsystem sftp /usr/lib/openssh/sftp-server

or:

Subsystem sftp internal-sftp

The exact path varies by operating system and package layout. Troubleshooting reports specifically document a nonexistent /usr/lib/ssh/sftp-server path and working alternatives at /usr/lib/openssh/sftp-server or internal-sftp. A stale path can allow the SSH daemon itself to run while every SFTP channel closes as soon as the daemon tries to execute the missing program.

Check the configured path against the filesystem. On a system using an external server binary, verify that the file exists, is executable, and is compatible with the installed SSH daemon. If you change sshd_config, validate the configuration with your platform’s supported SSH configuration test before reloading the daemon. Schedule a reload or restart according to your operating system’s administration procedure, and keep an existing administrative session open so a configuration mistake does not lock you out.

For a chrooted or restricted account, also confirm that the selected subsystem works inside the account’s policy. internal-sftp is often used with chroot rules because it runs inside the SSH daemon, while an external binary may require additional files or a valid path in the restricted environment. The administrator should choose the implementation that matches the host’s security policy rather than copying a path from another distribution.

5. Install a complete SFTP server implementation

Minimal, embedded, and appliance-oriented systems sometimes contain an SSH login service but omit the OpenSSH SFTP server package. In that situation, authentication can appear normal and an SFTP client can still disconnect immediately because there is no subsystem to launch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install the full SFTP-server package supplied by the operating system. On distributions that split OpenSSH into components, the package is commonly named openssh-sftp-server; use the package name and repository appropriate to your platform. After installation:

  1. Confirm that the package placed an sftp-server binary on disk.
  2. Point Subsystem sftp at that binary or select internal-sftp.
  3. Validate the SSH configuration.
  4. Reload the SSH daemon using the platform’s documented service command.
  5. Test with a nonprivileged account before changing production access rules.

Installing a package is not a substitute for checking logs. If the subsystem already exists, the log may instead identify a permissions, chroot, policy, or shell problem.

6. Check the login shell and startup files

SFTP is a subsystem channel, not an interactive terminal, but account restrictions and startup behavior can still terminate the channel. Reports describe failures involving a restricted shell, a shell that exits immediately, or a startup file such as .bashrc that emits output or contains a syntax error.

For a self-managed account, test with a standard shell that supports noninteractive sessions and verify that the account’s shell is present in the system’s approved-shell list. Review shell startup files for:

  • commands that print banners, status text, or prompts unconditionally;
  • syntax errors that cause the shell to exit;
  • interactive-only commands that fail when no terminal exists;
  • forced exits, disconnect commands, or policy scripts; and
  • environment setup that changes directory or permissions unexpectedly.

Remove unsolicited output and guard interactive-only code so it runs only for interactive shells. If the account intentionally uses a restricted shell or forced command, have the administrator confirm that its policy explicitly permits the SFTP subsystem. A shell change can affect other services, so record the original setting and test the account’s intended restrictions after the fix.

7. Separate authentication from SFTP startup with verbose SFTP output

Use the operating system’s OpenSSH client to compare Cyberduck with a second SFTP implementation:

sftp -vvv user@host

Replace user and host with the same username and hostname used in Cyberduck; add the provider’s port when necessary:

sftp -vvv -P 2222 user@host

The -vvv option produces verbose diagnostic output. Preserve the lines around authentication, subsystem requests, and the disconnect, but redact passwords, private-key material, tokens, and other secrets before sharing them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret the result in two stages:

  1. Authentication stage: determine whether the server accepts the username and credential.
  2. Subsystem stage: determine whether the server starts SFTP after authentication.

If authentication fails, focus on the username, password or key, account status, allowlists, and SSH policy. If authentication succeeds and the connection closes when SFTP is requested, focus on the Subsystem sftp setting, installed package, chroot or forced-command policy, and shell/startup behavior. Give the administrator the verbose output and the matching UTC log timestamp; that pairing is more useful than a screenshot of Cyberduck alone.

Common causes and the evidence that separates them

Possible cause Typical evidence Practical next action
SFTP or SSH not enabled for the account Provider confirms FTP access only, or logs show an account-policy rejection Ask the provider to enable SFTP/SSH for this user or supply the correct account
Expired or invalid password Authentication log records rejection or an expired-password state Update the credential through the provider’s supported process
Disabled or restricted SSH account Account is locked, suspended, denied by an allowlist, or blocked by policy Have the administrator restore the required SSH/SFTP entitlement
Missing SFTP package SSH login works, but logs show that no SFTP server can be executed Install the platform’s complete SFTP-server package
Wrong Subsystem sftp path Configured binary does not exist, commonly an obsolete path such as /usr/lib/ssh/sftp-server Use the installed binary path or internal-sftp, then validate and reload SSH
Shell or startup-file failure Authentication succeeds and the channel closes immediately; shell logs show an exit, syntax error, or unwanted output Use a compatible shell and correct noninteractive startup behavior
Provider interoperability or policy issue Cyberduck and another client fail at the same subsystem stage, or the provider identifies a service-side incompatibility Give support the timestamp and verbose output; the provider must correct the service

Choose the right recovery path

When a hosting provider manages the server

Do not edit server configuration you cannot control. Confirm the SFTP hostname and port, then open a support request containing the username, UTC failure time, source IP, and the exact Cyberduck message. State whether SSH works in a terminal and ask support to check both authentication and SFTP-subsystem logs. Request confirmation that the account is enabled for SFTP and that its password is current.

If support asks you to test again, perform one controlled retry after they make a change. Record the new time separately so the administrator can verify whether the subsystem launched. If the host offers managed SFTP support, its administrators are the people who can correct package installation, subsystem paths, chroot rules, and service policy.

When you administer the server

Start with logs, then inspect account state and the Subsystem sftp directive. Verify the configured binary or install the complete package, validate the daemon configuration, and reload SSH. Next review the account shell, startup files, forced commands, and chroot rules. Compare the result with sftp -vvv before testing Cyberduck again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a rollback copy of the original SSH configuration. Test with a separate ordinary account where possible, and never disable authentication controls broadly just to make one client connect. The goal is to restore the intended SFTP service, not merely to bypass the policy that exposed the fault.

After the server-side fix: verify the complete connection

  1. Close any stale Cyberduck connection and reopen the corrected bookmark.
  2. Confirm the protocol, hostname, port, username, and credential one more time.
  3. Connect and wait for the directory listing to finish; a password prompt alone is not proof that SFTP started.
  4. Create a small test directory or upload a harmless test file if your account permits writes.
  5. Download that file, verify its size, and remove it according to the provider’s policy.
  6. Check the server log for a normal session close rather than a subsystem error.

If the command-line client succeeds but Cyberduck still fails, compare the two bookmarks character by character: hostname, port, username, authentication method, and any path or proxy setting. If both clients fail immediately after authentication, return to the server logs instead of changing local transfer preferences.

Mistakes that waste time

  • Using an FTP bookmark: FTP on port 21 is a different service and does not validate SFTP.
  • Assuming SSH success proves SFTP: the SSH daemon can authenticate a user while the SFTP subsystem is missing or broken.
  • Changing the download folder: an EOF during packet reading occurs before a normal SFTP transfer and is not evidence of a damaged local file.
  • Retrying indefinitely: repeated attempts add noise to logs and can trigger rate limits or lockouts.
  • Copying a path from another server: distributions place sftp-server in different locations; verify the path on the affected host.
  • Publishing verbose logs unredacted: diagnostic output can contain usernames, host details, or authentication data.
  • Replacing security controls with a broad shell change: correct the specific policy or startup fault and preserve the account’s intended restrictions.

What is established—and what is not

The error itself identifies a premature remote close; it does not identify which server-side condition caused it. Cyberduck’s official support guidance treats the message primarily as a provider or server problem and directs users to server logs. Related interoperability reports identify account enablement, password state, SFTP package or subsystem configuration, and shell behavior as practical causes.

There is no reliable published statistic quantifying how often each cause occurs or how frequently a particular fix succeeds. Treat any claim that one setting is the universal cure with caution. The log entry at the time of your failed connection is the evidence that determines the correct remedy.
