Why Swap Usage Stays at Zero on Linux and Whether It Matters

Zero swap usage on Linux is usually normal: swapping is demand-driven. Learn how to verify configuration, interpret pressure and commit limits, and distinguish disk swap from zram and zswap.

Seeing 0 B or 0% used swap on Linux is usually normal. Swap is a reserve the kernel uses when reclaiming memory is preferable or necessary; it is not a pool Linux fills simply because it is enabled. Judge the number alongside available RAM, memory pressure, swappiness, commit limits, cgroup limits, and whether compressed swap is in use.

For a gaming PC, a zero swap counter generally means the current workload has not required storage-backed swap. A game can still launch, compile shaders, stream assets, or run beside other applications without moving anonymous memory to a swap device. That is a workload observation, not a guarantee that the system has unlimited memory or that swap is configured correctly.

Why Linux can have enabled swap with nothing stored in it

Swap is demand-driven

Linux chooses among several reclaim actions when memory gets tight. It can discard clean, file-backed cache pages and read them from the original file later; it can write anonymous pages, which have no file copy, to swap; and it can keep working while free memory remains above the levels needed for normal operation. The kernel does not write pages to swap merely to make the swap device look busy.

On a lightly loaded desktop, the reclaimable file cache and unused RAM may be enough. In that case, SwapTotal can be positive while SwapFree equals it and the reported used amount is zero. A game that fits comfortably in memory will normally produce this result.

Swappiness changes the point at which swapping is considered

The kernel’s vm.swappiness setting expresses the policy preference between reclaiming file-backed cache and swapping anonymous memory. A low value delays swap activity. The kernel documentation specifies a particular meaning for a value of 0: swap initiation waits until a zone reaches its high watermark. That is a policy threshold, not a promise that swap can never be used.

Distribution defaults, kernel versions, desktop profiles, and administrator settings differ. Read the active value instead of assuming a default:

cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness

Changing swappiness is not automatically an improvement. A lower setting can preserve anonymous pages in RAM longer, while a higher setting can make reclaim choices earlier. The useful value depends on the workload and on whether pressure, latency, or storage I/O is the actual problem.

What the “used swap” number actually tells you

Most tools derive their headline figure from kernel accounting such as SwapTotal and SwapFree. That answers a narrow question: how much swap space is currently represented as occupied by the kernel’s swap accounting. It does not measure every form of memory pressure or every swap-related operation.

Observation What it supports What it cannot prove
SwapTotal is greater than zero At least one swap area is configured and visible to the kernel. That the area will be used immediately, or that it is healthy under sustained pressure.
Used swap is zero No pages are currently counted as occupying the reported swap areas. That RAM is abundant, that no reclaim occurred, or that compressed swap is inactive.
Used swap is nonzero Some pages are represented in swap accounting. That the machine is currently thrashing or that performance is necessarily poor.
Swap usage falls slowly after pressure Pages may have been read back while their swap slots remain represented until reclaimed. That the current workload is still under the same pressure.

Pages read back from swap can remain represented in swap. Consequently, a nonzero number can outlast the event that caused it, and a zero number does not summarize all recent reclaim activity. zswap has separate compressed-memory accounting, so bytes in that cache are not simply the same thing as bytes reported as used on a disk-backed swap area.

Does zero swap usage matter?

When it is reassuring

  • Available memory is stable: normal applications and the game have headroom rather than repeatedly exhausting RAM.
  • Memory PSI is quiet: the pressure-stall information interface does not show sustained waiting for memory.
  • No process-management failures occur: the OOM killer or a configured systemd-oomd policy is not terminating workloads.
  • The configured backend is visible: the expected swap device or file appears in swapon --show.

In this situation, zero is simply evidence that the present workload has not needed storage-backed swap. It is a good outcome for a game session, but it is not a performance benchmark or a measurement of unused RAM capacity.

When it deserves investigation

  • Applications approach a commit limit even though the administrator expected swap to extend that limit.
  • Memory PSI rises, frame pacing deteriorates during multitasking, or the system becomes unresponsive under load.
  • The kernel OOM killer or systemd-oomd intervenes while a swap area is expected to be available.
  • A cgroup’s swap limit is lower than intended, or a container cannot use the host’s swap policy.
  • A configured device or file is missing from the active swap list.

These symptoms call for checking configuration and pressure signals, not for forcing swap usage just to make the counter nonzero.

Check configuration and pressure in a repeatable order

  1. List active swap areas and their priorities.
    swapon --show

Check the NAME, TYPE, SIZE, USED, and PRIO columns. An empty result means no active swap area is currently registered, even if a swap file exists on disk.

  2. Compare totals and free space.
    free -h
    grep -E '^(SwapTotal|SwapFree|MemAvailable|CommitLimit|Committed_AS):' /proc/meminfo

free gives a quick view; /proc/meminfo exposes the underlying counters. MemAvailable is more useful for near-term allocation headroom than the raw free-memory number. CommitLimit and Committed_AS help explain allocation failures that are not reflected by current swap occupancy.

  3. Read the active swapping policy.
    cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness

Record the value before changing anything. A value of zero has the high-watermark behavior documented by the kernel; it does not disable the swap mechanism in every circumstance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. Inspect memory pressure.
    cat /proc/pressure/memory

PSI reports how much time tasks spend stalled waiting for memory. Look for sustained pressure rather than a single transient sample. In a cgroup v2 workload, the corresponding cgroup can expose its own memory.pressure file, which may reveal a container or service limit hidden by host-wide averages.

  5. Check for cgroup restrictions.
    cat /sys/fs/cgroup/memory.swap.current
    cat /sys/fs/cgroup/memory.swap.max

These paths apply to a cgroup v2 hierarchy when the files exist. A finite memory.swap.max can prevent a game, launcher, or service from using as much swap as the host appears to have. A limit reduced below current use may not be reflected instantly: old swap entries can be reclaimed gradually.

Why commit limits can matter when swap usage is zero

Physical swap occupancy and virtual-memory commitment are related but different. Linux overcommit accounting can include configured swap capacity even when no page has been written there. In strict overcommit mode, the commit limit is based on swap plus a percentage of physical RAM. The result is that adding or removing swap can change whether future allocations are admitted without changing the current SwapUsed figure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the kernel’s current accounting values rather than inferring them from a zero counter:

grep -E '^(CommitLimit|Committed_AS|SwapTotal|SwapFree):' /proc/meminfo
cat /proc/sys/vm/overcommit_memory
cat /proc/sys/vm/overcommit_ratio

Do not treat a larger commit limit as extra physical memory. A process can reserve address space successfully and still trigger reclaim, throttling, or an out-of-memory response when it actually touches those pages.

Compressed swap: zram and zswap are not the same

zram: a compressed RAM block device

zram creates a compressed block device in RAM. That device can be initialized and activated as swap; the kernel documentation gives swapon /dev/zram0 as the activation example. Because the backing storage is compressed memory rather than a disk partition or file, disk swap can remain at zero while zram is doing the work.

zram trades some CPU time and RAM capacity for avoiding or reducing storage I/O. Its practical behavior depends on the compression algorithm, available CPU, workload, and how much memory is assigned to the device. A zram device still needs to appear in the active swap list to be used as swap.

zswap: a compressed cache in front of backing swap

The kernel describes zswap as “a lightweight compressed cache for swap pages.” It stores pages that would otherwise be written to the configured backing swap area. The documented trade-off is CPU cycles for potentially reduced swap I/O. When the cache fills or a page is otherwise evicted, data can be written to the backing swap device.

This creates an easy-to-miss diagnostic case: zswap can be enabled and consuming compressed RAM even while the disk-backed swap device reports zero. Conversely, a disk counter may rise after zswap evicts pages. Check the mechanism separately from ordinary swap totals when your distribution enables it.

How to distinguish the cases

  • Run swapon --show and identify whether the active area is a disk partition, a regular file, or a device such as /dev/zram0.
  • If the system exposes zram information, inspect its devices with zramctl or the matching entries under /sys/block/zram*.
  • If zswap is available in the running kernel, inspect its module parameters under /sys/module/zswap/parameters/ and use the kernel’s zswap counters where exposed.

Do not add zram or zswap merely to turn a zero into a nonzero number. Choose them for a defined goal such as reducing storage writes, extending usable memory under bursts, or changing latency during pressure.

Storage swap, zram, and zswap compared

Characteristic Storage-backed swap zram zswap with backing swap
Where swapped pages reside first Disk or another persistent block-storage backend. Compressed RAM on a zram block device. Compressed RAM cache; pages can later move to backing swap.
Primary cost Storage latency and I/O bandwidth. CPU time and RAM used for compressed storage. CPU time for compression, with potentially less swap I/O.
Can disk swap show zero while active? Not for pages occupying that backend. Yes; the active swap device may be zram instead. Yes; pages may still fit in the compressed cache.

What zero swap means during gaming

Launching and playing a game

If the game, operating system, and background applications fit in available memory, zero storage-backed swap is expected. It avoids unnecessary storage traffic, but it does not by itself establish frame-rate quality. Frame pacing also depends on CPU scheduling, GPU memory, asset I/O, thermals, and the game’s own workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Multitasking around a game

A browser with many tabs, recording software, a voice client, mod tools, and a game can create a sudden anonymous-memory demand. The important signal is whether memory PSI and allocation failures rise as the combined workload approaches its limits. Swap may remain zero because swappiness is low, because zram is absorbing pages, because reclaimable file cache is sufficient, or because a cgroup limit prevents the expected backend from being used.

Short bursts versus sustained pressure

A short loading spike may be handled by reclaiming cache and never leave a visible swap footprint. Sustained pressure is different: repeated stalls, rising PSI, OOM events, or systemd-oomd action indicate that the system cannot satisfy demand comfortably. Watching only the swap counter can miss both the start and the severity of that condition.

Troubleshoot an unexpectedly zero counter

The swap area was never activated

If swapon --show is empty, verify the intended file or device is present in the system’s boot-time configuration and that activation did not fail. A file existing on disk is not equivalent to an active swap area. Resolve activation errors first; changing swappiness cannot activate a missing backend.

The wrong area is being watched

Systems can have more than one swap area, each with a priority. A zram device may be preferred while a disk swap file remains at zero. Read every row from swapon --show instead of monitoring one assumed path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A cgroup or service policy is imposing a limit

Host-wide swap can be available while a game launched inside a constrained service or container has a restrictive memory.swap.max. Inspect the cgroup that actually contains the process, and compare its current and maximum values. A limit change can take time to converge if swap entries already exist.

Pressure exists without visible disk swap

Check /proc/pressure/memory, MemAvailable, commit counters, and OOM logs together. zram, zswap, cache reclaim, and policy thresholds can all change what appears in the disk-swap column. If those signals show healthy headroom, a zero counter is not a fault to repair.

Should you force swap usage?

No. Forcing pages into swap solely to make monitoring output look nonzero can add latency and I/O without solving a real constraint. First establish the failure mode: insufficient RAM, an allocation/commit limit, a cgroup cap, storage latency, or a policy choice.

If you change swappiness or add a compressed mechanism, change one variable at a time and observe the same workload. Keep the active value, swap priorities, PSI readings, commit counters, and OOM behavior as your before-and-after record. There is no universal swappiness value that is optimal for every Linux distribution, kernel, or game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision checklist

  • Zero swap, low PSI, stable gameplay: leave the configuration alone.
  • Zero disk swap, but zram or zswap is active: inspect compressed-swap statistics before concluding that no swapping occurs.
  • Zero swap and rising PSI: investigate reclaim policy, available memory, cgroup limits, and commit accounting.
  • Expected swap missing from swapon --show: fix activation or boot configuration.
  • OOM events despite configured swap: check commit limits, cgroup swap limits, pressure, and the priority of each swap area.

The meaningful question is not “How do I make swap usage nonzero?” It is “Can this workload obtain memory within its policy and latency limits?” A zero counter is compatible with a healthy Linux system, a compressed-swap setup, or a misconfigured backend; the surrounding evidence tells you which one.
