When Discord images will not load, first check Discord’s status page, then compare another network and another client. If images work on cellular data but not Wi-Fi, investigate DNS, router filtering, VPNs, or security software. If they fail only in the desktop app, restart it and clear its cache before reinstalling. A single missing image may instead be deleted, blocked, or unable to render.
Start by identifying what is failing
“Images not loading” can describe several different problems. Separate the symptom before changing settings: it helps distinguish an account-wide or network problem from a broken file or a client-specific bug.
- Viewing versus uploading: If existing images display but your upload hangs, troubleshoot the upload path separately from image viewing.
- Attachments versus embeds: A file uploaded to Discord is not the same as a preview pulled from an external website. Discord’s file attachment FAQ explains how attachments and embeds appear.
- All images versus one: If images across channels and servers fail, suspect service availability, the network, or the client. If one file fails, check whether it was deleted, whether its external link still works, and whether the problem follows a particular format or platform.
- Inline display versus opening: If an image opens with “Open in Browser” but remains blank in Discord, focus on the client, cache, or rendering settings.
Try the same image in the desktop app, Discord in a browser, or the mobile app, if available. Ask another person in the same channel whether they can see it. These comparisons narrow the cause before you make changes.
Check Discord’s status before changing settings
Visit Discord Status and look for an incident affecting media, attachments, or related services. If multiple people on different devices and networks are affected at the same time, a Discord-side problem is more plausible than a local cache issue. Wait for service to recover rather than repeatedly reinstalling or deleting local files. Discord’s troubleshooting guide also recommends checking service availability.

Run a quick network and client comparison
Use these tests to isolate where the failure occurs. Change one condition at a time and reload the affected image.

If Discord offers “Open in Browser” for the image, try it. A successful browser view does not prove the desktop app is healthy, but it is useful evidence that the image URL itself can be reached.
Check DNS, router filtering, and ISP issues
Discord says DNS problems are a common cause of broken images and other connection errors. DNS translates service names into network addresses; a resolver that is stale, misconfigured, or filtering a required host can interfere with image delivery. Changing DNS cannot restore a deleted attachment or repair an outage on Discord’s side.
- Switch from Wi-Fi to cellular data, or try another Wi-Fi network. If images load there, concentrate on the original network.
- Restart the router. Check for parental controls, safe-browsing features, or other router-level web filters and temporarily bypass them for a test.
- If the failure continues only on that network, test a different DNS service using your device’s or router’s network settings. Choose based on privacy, filtering, and administrative needs; no provider is a guaranteed fix.
- Restart Discord and test the same image. If changing DNS has no effect, restore your previous setting.
Discord has documented past cases involving BT DNS in the UK and Xfinity xFi routers in the United States, including interference when Private Browsing was enabled. Those examples do not establish that either provider currently affects every customer. If you use Xfinity and suspect xFi settings, check the current router controls or contact Xfinity Support. Test VPNs, proxies, firewalls, and security filters safely
A VPN, proxy, firewall, antivirus web shield, family-safety tool, or browser content blocker can interfere with media delivery even when text messages appear normally.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy and reload Discord. If you need a VPN for safety or access, do not leave it off; use this only as a controlled test.
- In a browser, test a private window and disable extensions such as ad blockers or privacy filters one at a time.
- Check firewall and antivirus settings for Discord rules, HTTPS scanning, web protection, or family-safety filtering. Temporarily bypass a feature only long enough to test.
- If a security feature is responsible, restore protection and add an appropriate Discord allow rule rather than leaving antivirus or the firewall disabled.
Discord has advised allowlisting Discord when security software blocks its services. A VPN is not a universal fix: it changes the network path and can introduce its own DNS or delivery problems.
Fully quit and reopen the desktop app
Closing the Discord window may leave its process running. Quit from the system tray on Windows or the menu-bar icon on macOS. If it remains open in the background, end remaining Discord processes in Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on macOS. Wait briefly, then reopen the app and retest. Discord’s troubleshooting guide recommends fully closing the client before restarting it.
Clear Discord’s desktop cache
Cache removal deletes local cached files, not your messages or server history. Discord rebuilds these files as needed, so some content may take longer to appear immediately after clearing them. Close Discord completely first.

Windows
- Press Win + R, enter
%appdata%discord, and press Enter. - Open the
Cachefolder and delete its contents. Do not delete the entire Discord profile folder. - Reopen Discord and check whether images load.
macOS
- Quit Discord.
- In Finder, choose Go → Go to Folder.
- Enter
~/Library/Application Support/discord/Cacheand open that folder. - Delete the cache contents, then reopen Discord.
These paths are listed in Discord’s current troubleshooting guidance. For mobile-specific storage behavior, use the app controls described below rather than applying desktop paths.
Check hardware acceleration if only the app has a display problem
If images load in a browser but not the desktop client, try toggling hardware acceleration. In the desktop app, look for User Settings → Advanced → Hardware Acceleration; menu wording can vary between client versions. Change the setting, restart Discord, and test again. If there is no improvement, restore the original setting.
Update Discord, then reinstall only if needed
Restart the app so it can check for updates. If the problem persists, update Discord from its official website or the relevant official app store. Install pending operating-system updates if the failure appears limited to one device.
Reinstalling makes sense when the installed client alone fails, cache clearing has not helped, or the app is stuck updating or loading. It is unlikely to fix a Discord outage or an ISP filter. Before uninstalling, make sure you can sign in again and access any required two-factor authentication. Remove the app, restart the device, then install Discord from an official source. Discord’s troubleshooting guide covers updating and reinstalling; avoid unofficial modified clients and cleanup utilities.

For Discord in a browser
If the browser client is the only place images fail, hard-refresh the page, then try a private window. If that works, disable extensions one at a time and check browser privacy settings that block site data or external content. You can also clear Discord’s site data or test another browser. A browser test isolates the desktop app only if browser extensions, VPNs, and network conditions are not creating a separate problem.
For Android and iPhone or iPad
Android
Force-stop and reopen Discord, then check for an app update in the official app store. If needed, use Android’s app settings to clear Discord’s cache. Avoid Clear data unless you are prepared to sign in again and remove local app data; labels and paths vary by Android version and device maker.
iPhone and iPad
Force-quit Discord and reopen it, then check for an App Store update. iOS does not generally offer the same standalone cache-clearing control as Android. If the issue appears limited to the app, consider offloading or reinstalling it through iOS settings, after confirming you can sign in again.
Discord’s troubleshooting recommendations include clearing app cache or data on mobile, but the exact controls differ by operating system and device. Its patch notes also show that image and embed behavior can be platform-specific: Discord has documented fixes involving iOS image viewing, animated formats, filenames, sensitive-content classification, and media caching (May 1, 2025; July 7, 2025). Discord announced full Unicode support for attachment filenames in July 2024. These fixes are evidence that some symptoms can depend on the client or file type, not proof that a particular current bug is affecting your device.

When only one attachment, GIF, or embed is missing
Do not start by reinstalling Discord if one item is affected and others load normally. Check these possibilities:
- The attachment or message was removed: Ask the sender to confirm it is still available or upload it again.
- The image comes from another website: The site may block embedding, the URL may have expired, or the preview may have failed to generate. Open the original URL separately if it is safe to do so.
- The file is still processing or cannot render in this client: Compare it on another device and with another image of the same type.
- Visibility settings apply: Check whether the item is marked as a spoiler or subject to sensitive-content handling.
- A bot or app generated the embed: Its image URL may be invalid or subject to the URL behavior described in Discord’s developer reference. That issue is more relevant to bot developers than to someone viewing an ordinary uploaded attachment.
Discord’s attachment documentation distinguishes uploaded files from external previews, so a broken embed does not necessarily mean Discord cannot serve uploaded images.
Know when to stop changing local settings
Stop local troubleshooting and report the problem if the official status page shows a relevant incident, the failure affects multiple people on different networks, or the same reproducible issue appears in the desktop app, browser, and mobile app. If a recent client update appears to trigger the same repeatable image failure, include that detail rather than making increasingly broad system changes.
When contacting Discord Support, include the operating system and device, whether you used the desktop, browser, or mobile client, the affected server or channel, whether all images or only certain files fail, and whether another network or client works. Add the Discord client version if available, screenshots, and steps that reliably reproduce the problem. This evidence helps separate a client bug from a network or individual-file issue.
