Before changing anything: identify the exact error

Copy the complete message or error code. Common examples include:

Quick-fix checklist

2. Restart Windows and your router.

Epic Games Launcher

In Epic, open your Library, select the three-dot menu for GTA V, choose Manage, and select Verify. Epic’s official instructions are available here.

Steam and Epic copies still use Rockstar authentication. Verify files in the store that contains the installation, then allow the Rockstar Games Launcher to sign in.

4. Check Windows Security and antivirus blocking

Run the bundled DirectX and Visual C++ installers, restart Windows, and try again. Steam, Epic, custom drives, and older installations may use different paths.

For 0xc000007b, Rockstar additionally recommends reinstalling DirectX, Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015 in both x64 and x86 versions, and the .NET Runtime matching your system architecture. Use official Microsoft sources linked from Rockstar’s 0xc000007b guidance. Do not download individual DLL files from unofficial websites.

Targeted 0xc000007b exploit-protection workaround

Use this only when the displayed error is 0xc000007b. It changes a Windows security mitigation for selected programs.

1. Open Windows Security.
2. Select App & browser control.
3. Select Exploit protection settings.
4. Open Program settings and choose Add program to customize.
5. Select Choose exact file path and add:

6. Find Force randomization for images (Mandatory ASLR).
7. Check Override system settings, set it to Off, and click Apply.

Reopen the launcher and test GTA V. If this does not help, restore the default exploit-protection setting. If your launcher is installed elsewhere, locate the actual executable rather than creating folders or changing registry entries.

6. Troubleshoot connection and authentication failures

GTA V installation, activation, online play, and periodic entitlement checks require internet access. Story Mode can therefore be affected by launcher authentication even when you are not trying to play GTA Online. When service status is normal and basic internet access works, Rockstar’s connection guidance recommends:

Do not open ports for every Social Club error. Port changes are relevant when connectivity is the plausible cause, not when files are corrupt or the account is wrong.

Change DNS only when name resolution is suspect

Rockstar documents these Google DNS values:

IPv4 preferred: 8.8.8.8
IPv4 alternate: 8.8.4.4

On Windows 10, use Settings → Network & Internet → Advanced network settings → Change adapter options. Right-click Wi-Fi or Ethernet, select Properties, open Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), choose Properties, and enter the values. Repeat for IPv6 and select Validate settings upon exit.

Changing DNS may help connection or name-resolution problems, but it cannot repair a damaged launcher, incorrect Rockstar account, missing entitlement, or service outage. Record your original settings or return to automatic DNS if the test fails.

7. Clean-reinstall only the launcher

Use this last, after updating, verification, security testing, dependency repair, and network checks fail. The goal is to remove launcher components while preserving GTA V.

1. Close GTA V, the store launcher, and Rockstar processes.
2. Open the Rockstar Games Launcher installation folder and run uninstall.exe.
3. When prompted, leave uninstall the game data unchecked.
4. Delete only the launcher-related folders Rockstar identifies:

Do not delete the entire DocumentsRockstar Games folder or the GTA V installation directory. Paths vary if Windows or the game is installed on another drive. Rockstar specifically warns against deleting additional files because game data may be lost.

8. Remove third-party launch complications

As a diagnostic step, temporarily disable or remove mods, script hooks, overlays, unofficial launch helpers, and injectors. These can interfere with startup even when the Rockstar launcher itself is healthy. This is a practical isolation test, not a claim that it is Rockstar’s documented universal fix.
