If Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 freezes, closes unexpectedly, or will not start on Xbox Series X|S, begin by fully quitting the game, restarting it, and checking for updates in the in-game Content Manager. Then follow the official checks below in order. They can address common game, storage, cache, console, network, and account states, but they do not identify every individual crash or guarantee a fix.
Start with a full quit, restart, and game update
- Quit the game completely. From the Xbox guide, highlight Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, open its menu, and choose Quit. Launch the game again rather than returning to a suspended session.
- Check for in-game content updates. Open the game’s Content Manager and install any available updates.

Check storage, cache, and add-on state
Free space if the console is more than 75% full
The official checklist says to delete games you are not currently playing if console storage is over 75% full. This is a storage-management step; the guidance does not say that buying an expansion device fixes crashes.

Enable or increase rolling cache
In the game’s settings, check the rolling-cache option and enable it or increase its allocation as appropriate. The exact menu wording can vary by game update.

Clear reserved space and reinstall selected add-ons
If the earlier checks do not help, the checklist includes clearing the game’s reserved space and reinstalling chosen add-on content. Clearing reserved space can remove locally stored game data or content that the game may need to download again, so be prepared for the game to rebuild or reacquire content.
Power-cycle the console, then test the network
Power-cycle Xbox
Use the console’s full power-cycle procedure rather than simply returning to the dashboard, then relaunch the game.

Run the Xbox network test
Test the console’s network connection using Xbox settings. If the console prompts you to update its system software during the network-check process, accept the update as the support checklist directs.

Try launching the game under another Xbox profile on the same console. If the behavior changes, that is useful diagnostic information about the account or profile state; it does not by itself establish the cause. The official checklist includes this comparison as a troubleshooting step.

Advanced steps: resync the local save or refresh the profile
If the checklist has not resolved the issue, Microsoft Flight Simulator Support’s advanced Xbox troubleshooting article describes local-save corruption and profile-data corruption as possibilities.
Delete the local save and allow cloud resynchronization
- Delete the game’s local save data from the Xbox storage settings.
- Restart the console.
- Start the game and allow saves to resync from Xbox cloud storage.
Make sure the console can connect to Xbox services so the cloud resync can take place. Follow the support article’s instructions for selecting the local save data to remove.

Remove and re-add the affected profile
The advanced guide also suggests removing and then re-adding the affected Xbox profile if its data may be corrupted. When adding the account again, do not choose “Get a new account” unless you intend to create a new Microsoft account.
What the May 2026 stability notice does—and does not—tell you
On May 8, 2026, Jummivana posted on behalf of the Microsoft Flight Simulator Team that it was monitoring stability and non-functional avionics issues on Xbox and PlayStation 5 following Sim Update 5. The post said: “Asobo is now working on an update to address these issues, and we plan to release it before the start of Sim Update 6 flighting.” That is a dated statement about the team’s plans at that time, not proof that a particular crash has the same cause or that the issue remained unresolved on October 8, 2026. If it still crashes, check current status and collect useful details
Look at the official Tips & Troubleshooting forum section and the known-issues page for current information. The known-issues page reviewed for this article was updated August 9, 2026; its visible entry concerned Marketplace availability in some regions, not a specific Xbox crash. The November 19, 2024 launch-era known-issues post is historical and should not be read as a current status update.
If you contact support or report the problem, include details that help distinguish where and when it occurs:
- Whether your console is an Xbox Series X or Series S.
- Whether the game fails at launch, during loading, or after entering a flight.
- The game and console update state, and whether Content Manager showed pending updates.
- Whether you have observed the problem with one aircraft or mode, or across different ones.
- Whether another Xbox profile changes the result.
These details help describe and investigate the failure; they are not established causes. Official sources reviewed for this issue provide no attributable crash-frequency statistic and no Series X-versus-Series S comparison, so neither should be inferred from anecdotal reports.
