If a Minecraft server’s run.bat will not start, run it from Command Prompt and read the exact error before changing anything. The usual checks are whether Windows can find a compatible Java runtime, whether the script points to the real server JAR in the right folder, and whether the first launch has created an EULA file that still needs your consent. These steps apply to Minecraft: Java Edition servers; Bedrock uses a different server package and launch process.
First, reveal the error instead of letting the window close
Double-clicking a batch file can close its window as soon as the script exits, hiding the useful part: Java’s error output. Open Command Prompt, change to the folder containing the server files, and run the batch file there. For example, if the folder is C:MinecraftServer, enter:
cd /d C:MinecraftServerrun.bat
Write down or copy the complete output, including any lines before the final error. Also open run.bat in Notepad and keep its full contents available. The message and script determine which fix applies; “not working” alone is not enough to identify one cause.
Check that this is a Java Edition server
The steps below are for a Java Edition server launched from a .jar file. Minecraft’s official Java server download page describes running that server JAR with a compatible Java Runtime Environment. Bedrock has a separate server package, so do not apply Java JAR commands to it.
Check Java from the same Command Prompt
In the Command Prompt window you used to run the batch file, enter:
java -version
Minecraft Help recommends this check and notes that Windows may need PATH configured so Java is available from the command line. See the official server setup guide. Java can be installed but still unavailable to the script if the command environment cannot find it, or if the script invokes a different Java executable than the one you expect.

- If Windows reports that
'java' is not recognized as an internal or external command, install or repair a compatible Java runtime and configure PATH, or edit the batch file to call the correct Java executable by its full path. - If
java -versionworks, note which runtime it reports. The compatible Java version depends on the specific server release; there is no single version that applies to every release. Check the requirements for the exact server version you downloaded.
Verify the server folder and JAR filename
The batch file must run Java against the server JAR that is actually on disk. The official setup guide’s procedure puts the downloaded JAR in a server folder, opens Command Prompt in that folder, and runs it using its real filename.
Compare the command in run.bat with the files in the server folder. For example, if the JAR is named server.jar, the command should refer to that name; a script that still points to a different filename will not launch it. Check that you are in the folder containing the JAR when the command runs. A path containing spaces or a script started with an unexpected working folder can cause access errors, so confirm the actual error before rewriting the command.

Follow the error message to the relevant fix
“java is not recognized”
Windows cannot find Java through the command used by the batch file. Recheck java -version in that same Command Prompt, then correct the Java installation, PATH, or the executable path in the script.
“Unable to access jarfile”
Java was invoked, but it could not open the named JAR. Verify the JAR’s exact filename and location, and make sure the command runs from the folder where the file is present. Do not assume that reinstalling Java will fix a filename or working-directory mismatch.

“UnsupportedClassVersionError”
This error indicates that the Java runtime actually selected by the command is older than the class-file version required by the server JAR. Check the runtime that the batch file invokes, then compare it with the Java requirement for that specific server release. A Minecraft Forum user thread provides a community example of this error; it is not official troubleshooting guidance: Minecraft Forum discussion.

The first server command may report that properties and eula.txt could not be loaded. According to the official setup guide, the initial run creates these files. If you choose to accept the Minecraft EULA, open eula.txt, change the setting to eula=true, save it, and run the server again. Only set this value if you personally agree to the terms; do not accept them on someone else’s behalf. The guide’s steps are at Minecraft Help: How to Setup a Minecraft: Java Edition Server.

Do not treat memory arguments as the first fix
Arguments such as -Xmx control Java heap allocation, but increasing them is not a general fix for a batch file that cannot find Java or open its JAR. The cited official Minecraft memory allocation article concerns Minecraft Java Edition game allocation through the launcher, not a diagnosis for server startup failures. Avoid choosing an arbitrary heap size: first identify the actual error and account for the computer’s available memory.
If it still will not start
Keep the full Command Prompt output and the contents of run.bat together. Those two details make it possible to distinguish a Java-selection problem from a path, filename, first-run, or other startup issue. Minecraft’s official guide also cautions that self-hosting can require home-network configuration and that Minecraft does not provide support for home networks or privately made servers. If you would rather not maintain a self-hosted server, the guide identifies Realms as an alternative.
