Dynmap converts world chunks into map tiles. Rendering requires chunk access, image generation, tile writes, and usually web-serving activity at the same time as the game is running. The Dynmap configuration documentation specifically warns that changing the number of rendering threads can greatly affect server performance during full and radius renders. Update renders normally have only a marginal effect by comparison.
| Render type | What it does | Risk while players are online |
|---|---|---|
| Update render | Refreshes tiles affected by recent world changes | Usually the lightest workload; the documented thread setting has a marginal effect here |
| Radius render | Renders a selected area around a location | Can create a sustained CPU, memory, and disk load |
| Full render | Walks through an entire world and generates missing or refreshed tiles | Highest sustained load and the most common point at which memory, garbage collection, or storage problems become visible |
A crash during rendering does not prove that Dynmap alone is defective. A full render may expose a heap allocation that was already too small, a disk that was nearly full, or a host limit that ordinary play never reaches.

What to do immediately when the server starts failing
- Stop the render. Use the Dynmap cancel-render command exposed by your installed build, commonly
/dynmap cancelrenderfrom the console or an operator account. If the server is unresponsive, stop it cleanly from the host panel or console rather than repeatedly killing the process. - Save the complete log. Keep the lines from several minutes before the shutdown through the final exception or operating-system message. Look for
OutOfMemoryError,GC overhead limit exceeded, allocation failures, disk-write errors, or a host-level termination notice. - Check RAM and storage before restarting a render. Record the JVM maximum heap, actual free memory, and free space on the filesystem containing the world and
plugins/dynmap. A restart can temporarily hide the symptom without removing the cause. - Restart without an automatic full render. Let players connect only after the server remains stable under normal activity. Do not immediately queue the same full render again.
- Change one setting, then test a small area. A radius render or a deliberately small world area gives you a safer way to verify the change than another multi-hour full render.
Set Dynmap’s render concurrency below the danger point
The principal Dynmap control is the number of map tiles rendered at once, usually represented by tiles-rendered-at-once in the generated configuration. The documentation says this value should match the number of tiles rendered concurrently and should not exceed the number of CPU cores. When the option is left unset, Dynmap uses half of the available CPU cores.
How to choose a value
- Start with a conservative value such as
1on a server that is already struggling. - Increase it only if the server remains responsive and the log shows no memory or garbage-collection pressure.
- Never set it above the host’s available CPU core count. A virtual machine may advertise fewer cores than the physical machine, and the advertised count is the limit that matters to your process.
- Remember that more renderer threads can shorten a render while making gameplay ticks, garbage collection, and disk writes compete more aggressively.
Where to edit it
Stop the server before editing the Dynmap configuration, then open the configuration file generated in plugins/dynmap. Find the render-thread or tiles-rendered-at-once entry and change the numeric value while preserving the existing key and indentation. Configuration names and comments vary between Dynmap releases; if your file uses a different label, follow the comment in that file rather than adding a second, guessed key. Start the server and confirm in the startup log that Dynmap loaded the setting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not change concurrency and memory at the same time if you are trying to identify the cause. Lower concurrency first, perform a small test render, and then decide whether a heap adjustment is also required.

Raise renderinterval when renders are too aggressive
renderinterval controls the delay between rendering operations. Dynmap’s documented default is 0.5 seconds. If you reduced it below that value, the renderer requests work more frequently and leaves less time for normal server ticks, chunk saves, and garbage collection. Restore the default or use a longer interval when the server is unstable.
Safe adjustment procedure
- Stop the server and back up the Dynmap configuration.
- Set
renderintervalto0.5or a larger value rather than a smaller one. - Restart and watch the main server log during a small radius render.
- If tick latency is still high, increase the interval again or leave full renders for an offline window.
A longer interval generally makes a full render take more time. That is an intentional trade-off: preserving the game process is more important than finishing the map quickly.
Give the JVM enough memory, but verify what is actually failing
Community reports associate Dynmap full-render crashes with memory exhaustion and excessive garbage collection. In one SpigotMC report, a roughly 9,000-block world exhausted a server configured with 5 GB of RAM; the user reported stability only after allocating substantially more memory. A GitHub issue also records GC overhead limit exceeded during a full render. These are reports from particular worlds and software versions, not a universal RAM requirement.

Distinguish heap exhaustion from a slow collector
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space: the Java heap reached its limit. Reduce render concurrency and increase the heap only if the host has genuine unused RAM.GC overhead limit exceeded: Java is spending most of its time collecting little usable memory. Loweringtiles-rendered-at-once, slowing the render interval, and reducing other plugins’ load can prevent the same heap from being overwhelmed.- Operating-system out-of-memory termination: the host may kill Java before Java can print a heap exception. Check the hosting panel, system journal, or container events as well as the Minecraft log.
Allocate memory without starving the operating system
Increase the JVM maximum heap in the startup command or hosting panel only after checking the machine’s total RAM. Leave headroom for the operating system, native memory, Java itself, the web server, and any other services. Giving Java nearly all physical memory can replace a Dynmap crash with host swapping or an operating-system kill. Because the reports do not establish a universal amount, size the heap from your world, plugin set, player load, and observed log errors rather than copying someone else’s number.
Check disk space and tile growth
Dynmap writes a large number of image tiles. GitHub issue 314 reports a Dynmap 0.20 crash when the server ran out of disk space. A full filesystem can also prevent world saves, logs, or crash reports from being written, making the final symptom look less specific than it is.
Checks to perform
- Check free space on the volume containing the world and the Dynmap tile directory, not just the volume where the control panel is installed.
- Look for failed tile writes, “no space left on device” messages, and a sudden stop in file growth.
- Remove or archive old logs, obsolete backups, and unused tile sets only after confirming they are not needed.
- Leave a meaningful safety margin; do not start a full render with only a few gigabytes free on a large world.
Freeing space fixes a storage failure, but it does not reduce CPU or memory pressure. Keep the render-thread and interval changes when the log also shows those problems.

Run full renders offline or in a controlled maintenance window
Canceling a full render on a live server is a community workaround, not an official Dynmap fix. Users have reported stopping the job after enough of the map was rendered, then continuing later. The safer pattern is to render while the server is stopped or while player activity is minimal, especially for a large or unexplored world.
A cautious render workflow
- Make a verified world and configuration backup.
- Stop automatic render triggers temporarily if your installation enables them.
- Start with a small radius render and watch CPU, memory, tick time, disk usage, and the log.
- Queue the full render only during the planned maintenance window. On standard builds, the command is commonly
/dynmap fullrender <world>; use/dynmap helpto confirm the syntax for your version. - Keep the console visible for the entire first run. If memory, garbage collection, or storage errors appear, cancel the render and correct that resource before trying again.
- After completion, return automatic updates to their previous setting and test normal player activity.
Rendering in several smaller radius jobs can reduce the length of any one overload event, but it does not eliminate the total work. It is a scheduling technique, not a substitute for adequate memory, CPU, or disk capacity.

An FTB forum participant suggested serving already-rendered Dynmap tiles from a separate web server so the Minecraft process does not also handle web traffic. This is an anecdotal architecture suggestion, not a demonstrated fix for renderer crashes. It can reduce HTTP and connection work in the game process, but it will not remove the CPU, memory, chunk-access, or disk cost of creating tiles. Treat it as a later optimization after the renderer itself is stable.

Use the log to identify the failure class
| Log or symptom | Most likely direction | First corrective action |
|---|---|---|
OutOfMemoryError or heap-allocation failures during a full render |
Java heap exhausted by the render and the rest of the server | Cancel the render, lower tiles rendered at once, then review safe JVM headroom |
GC overhead limit exceeded |
Garbage collection is consuming most of the available time | Lower concurrency and increase the interval; raise memory only when the host can support it |
| “No space left on device” or failed tile writes | Filesystem capacity exhausted | Free space on the actual world or Dynmap volume before rendering again |
| Long freezes followed by a process exit with no Java exception | Possible host limit, operating-system kill, or unrecorded resource failure | Check hosting-panel events and system-level logs, then test with a smaller render |
| Crash after many hours of a full render | Sustained load, cumulative memory pressure, or storage growth | Use an offline window, monitor resources over time, and avoid assuming that a short test proves the full job is safe |
A DigitalOcean question describes a Bukkit server quitting spontaneously during Dynmap rendering, and an FTB forum thread similarly describes Dynmap killing a server. Those reports show that the hosting environment matters, but they do not identify one common provider-side cause. Check container memory limits, process quotas, swap behavior, CPU throttling, and automated restart policies with your host.
Do not assume the Minecraft watchdog is the explanation
The watchdog is normally associated with an excessively long main-thread tick, and heavy rendering could contribute to such a stall. However, no source establishes that the Minecraft watchdog is responsible for Dynmap rendering crashes specifically. Confirm a watchdog diagnosis from the actual watchdog stack trace instead of treating every shutdown during a render as proof. If the log names a watchdog timeout, investigate the long tick separately from heap and disk errors.
Account for version and configuration differences
Many public crash reports involve older Dynmap, Bukkit, or Spigot versions. Their symptoms remain useful clues, but their exact memory behavior and configuration defaults may not match a current installation. Before changing files, record the Minecraft version, server implementation, Dynmap version, Java version, operating system, allocated heap, CPU core count, and the exact render command. Then read the comments in the configuration generated by your installed Dynmap release.
No maintainer-issued fix for this specific class of crash is established. Update Dynmap and the server only after checking compatibility and release notes; an update may contain unrelated fixes, but it should not be presented as a guaranteed cure for a resource-exhaustion failure.
A repeatable prevention checklist
- Keep
tiles-rendered-at-onceat or below the available CPU core count; begin lower on a busy server. - Leave
renderintervalat the documented0.5-second default or increase it when normal ticks suffer. - Reserve safe RAM for the operating system and other services instead of assigning all physical memory to Java.
- Monitor free disk space where Dynmap stores tiles and where the world saves.
- Use small test renders before a full render and watch the complete log.
- Schedule large renders offline or during maintenance, and cancel them rather than allowing a visibly unstable server to continue.
- Keep backups before large rendering jobs and retain the logs from any failed attempt.
- Check host-level limits when the Java log contains no useful exception.
The practical fix is resource control: reduce concurrent tiles, slow the schedule, provide verified memory and disk headroom, and move full renders away from live gameplay. Once a small test remains stable and the logs show no resource failure, expand the job cautiously rather than returning immediately to the most aggressive settings.
