How to Add Code to the WordPress Header and Footer

Learn the three reliable ways to add code to a WordPress header or footer, with child-theme PHP examples, testing steps and recovery advice.

The safest manual way to add code to a WordPress header or footer is to put a callback in a child theme’s functions.php and connect it to wp_head or wp_footer. This avoids editing template files and keeps the change when the parent theme updates. If your theme provides a code-injection field, that is easier; if it does not, a child theme is required for file-based methods.

Use wp_head for code that belongs inside the document’s <head>, and wp_footer for code that should appear immediately before the closing </body> tag. Back up the site and have FTP or hosting file-manager access before changing PHP: a syntax error in functions.php can make the entire site unavailable.

Choose the right method first

WordPress offers three practical ways to insert header or footer code without modifying a parent theme. They differ in convenience, update resilience and the chance of breaking the site.

Method Technical effort Breakage risk Depends on theme features Survives parent-theme updates Plugin required
Theme code-injection field Low Low to moderate Yes; only some themes include one Usually yes No
Child-theme header.php and footer.php Moderate Moderate No, but the child templates must be complete enough to work Yes No
Child-theme functions.php with hooks Moderate Moderate if PHP is valid No Yes No

For most site owners who can edit a child theme, the hook method is the best balance. It leaves the parent templates untouched, so you do not have to copy or maintain an entire header or footer file.

What wp_head and wp_footer actually do

wp_head

The wp_head() function is normally called in header.php, just before the closing </head> tag. WordPress fires the wp_head action at that point. A callback attached to the action can echo markup such as a verification meta tag, an inline style, or a script that a service specifically requires in the head.

wp_footer

The wp_footer() function is normally called near the end of footer.php, immediately before </body>. WordPress fires the wp_footer action there. The action takes no parameters. A callback should output its markup and not return a value. The callback can run only if the active theme actually includes wp_footer().

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Priority controls timing

When several callbacks use the same action, the priority number determines order: a lower number runs earlier. If you omit it, WordPress uses priority 10. Add a different priority only when another snippet must run before or after yours; changing priority does not move code from the head to the footer.

Prepare the site before editing

  • Make a restorable backup. Save both the database and the current theme files. Keep a copy outside WordPress so you can restore it if PHP will not load.
  • Use staging when available. Test the snippet on a staging copy first, then repeat the change on production after confirming the page renders and the code appears once.
  • Confirm the active theme. A child theme must be active for its templates and functions.php to run. Editing an inactive theme has no front-end effect.
  • Obtain a recovery route. Have FTP, SFTP or the host’s file manager ready. The WordPress editor may be inaccessible after a PHP parse error.
  • Know the provider’s placement instructions. Some services require a snippet in the head, while others require placement just before the closing body tag. Follow those instructions instead of choosing a location by guesswork.
  • Keep a change log. Record what was added, where it was added and when. This makes duplicate snippets and later troubleshooting much easier.

Method 1: use your theme’s built-in code field

Some themes expose a user interface for adding markup without touching files. The label and location vary, and many themes have no such control. Look through the theme’s own settings rather than assuming that every WordPress installation has the same menu.

GeneratePress

In installations that include its hooks feature, the path shown in the theme settings is Appearance → GeneratePress → Hooks. Select the appropriate hook, enter the markup and save. A header snippet normally belongs on wp_head; a footer snippet belongs on wp_footer.

Search the Customizer for Advanced → Code Injection. If the panel is present, place head code in the head field and footer code in the footer field, then publish the Customizer changes.

Astra

Some Astra setups let you add an HTML block through the Header Builder. Add the markup to the header or footer location provided by the builder and publish. The exact controls can differ by version and enabled components.

Check the result

Open the public page in a private browser window, view the page source and search for a distinctive part of the snippet. Use browser developer tools to check the Console for JavaScript errors. If the code appears twice, look for another theme field, plugin or custom function that contains the same snippet.

Method 2: edit header.php and footer.php in a child theme

A child-theme template with the same filename as a parent template overrides that parent file. This lets you insert code without losing it on a parent-theme update. Do not edit the parent theme directly: an update can replace the file and remove your change.

Create or select a child theme

  1. Install or create a child theme for the active parent theme.
  2. Activate the child theme only after confirming that its required stylesheet and parent reference are correct.
  3. Copy the parent’s header.php or footer.php into the child-theme directory before editing it. Preserve the surrounding markup and PHP.
  4. Keep a copy of the original parent file so you can compare changes after a theme update.

Insert code in header.php

Place head markup before the call to wp_head(), normally at the bottom of the <head> element:

<head>
    <meta charset='<?php bloginfo( 'charset' ); ?>'>
    <!-- Your approved head snippet goes here -->
    <script src='https://example.invalid/script.js'></script>
    <?php wp_head(); ?>
</head>

The example URL is illustrative only; replace it with the exact URL supplied by the service whose code you are installing. Do not remove the existing wp_head() call. If a child header.php omits it, WordPress, plugins and the theme can lose essential head output.

Insert code in footer.php

Place footer markup near the existing wp_footer() call, before the closing body tag:

    <!-- Your approved footer snippet goes here -->
    <script>
        // Footer code supplied by your service
    </script>
    <?php wp_footer(); ?>
</body>
</html>

Keep wp_footer() in the template. Removing it can prevent plugin scripts, enqueued assets and other callbacks from appearing. If the parent template has special markup, retain that markup unless you understand exactly why it is being changed.

When template editing is appropriate

This method is useful when a provider demands a literal location in the template or when the theme has no code field. It is less convenient than a hook because you are maintaining a copy of the parent template. Recheck the child file after parent-theme updates: template structure can change even though your child file remains unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Method 3: add callbacks in a child-theme functions.php

For a manual, no-plugin setup, adding callbacks is generally safer than copying templates. The footer and header files do not need to be edited; the active theme’s existing wp_head() and wp_footer() calls trigger your functions.

Add a head snippet

Open the child theme’s functions.php and add a uniquely named function. The function outputs the markup, then add_action connects it to wp_head:

<?php
function vgsources_add_head_code() {
    ?>
    <!-- Approved code for the document head -->
    <script src='https://example.invalid/head-script.js'></script>
    <?php
}
add_action( 'wp_head', 'vgsources_add_head_code', 10 );

Do not paste a second <?php tag into a file that is already inside PHP mode. If your file already ends a PHP block and contains HTML, place the function in the correct block and check the surrounding syntax carefully.

Add a footer snippet

Use the same pattern with wp_footer:

function vgsources_add_footer_code() {
    ?>
    <!-- Approved code for the document footer -->
    <script>
        // Footer code supplied by your service
    </script>
    <?php
}
add_action( 'wp_footer', 'vgsources_add_footer_code', 10 );

These callbacks echo output when the action fires. They do not return a string. A callback attached to wp_footer will not run on a theme that never calls wp_footer(), so inspect the active footer template if nothing appears.

Use a distinctive function name

Function names are global in a typical WordPress request. Prefix yours with a project or site identifier, as in vgsources_add_head_code, to reduce collisions with a theme or plugin. Never copy a generic name such as add_header_code from an unknown snippet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Control execution when necessary

If code should run only in a particular context, put a condition inside the callback. For example, a snippet intended for public pages should not be emitted in the administration area:

function vgsources_add_public_head_code() {
    if ( is_admin() ) {
        return;
    }
    ?>
    <!-- Public-page-only markup -->
    <?php
}
add_action( 'wp_head', 'vgsources_add_public_head_code', 10 );

Use conditions only when you know the service’s requirements. Restricting a verification or consent script to the wrong pages can make verification fail or produce incomplete measurements.

Where common kinds of code belong

Code type Typical location Reason to confirm with the provider
Site-verification meta tag Inside the head, usually through wp_head The provider may require a specific tag or exact placement.
Analytics or measurement loader Often the head, but some services specify the footer Placement affects when the script loads and whether the service recognizes it.
Inline CSS or preload hint Head Invalid markup can block rendering or create console errors.
Deferred widget or body-end script Footer, through wp_footer The service may require a container element or a consent check first.
PHP logic Never paste raw PHP into a theme code field intended for HTML PHP must be placed in a valid PHP file, normally the child theme’s functions.php.

Do not paste the same vendor snippet into both locations unless its instructions explicitly require two separate pieces. Duplicate loaders can create double events, repeated widgets or conflicting global variables.

Test the insertion without guessing

  1. Clear relevant caches. Purge the page cache, server cache and content-delivery cache if your setup uses them. Also test in a private browser window.
  2. View the generated source. Use the browser’s “View Page Source” command, not only the editor view. Search for a unique word from the snippet.
  3. Check placement. Confirm head code is between <head> and </head>, and footer code is before </body>.
  4. Check the Console and Network panels. Look for syntax errors, blocked requests, mixed-content warnings and a script that loads more than once.
  5. Test several templates. Visit the home page, a standard post, a page and a 404 page. A custom template may omit a hook even when the main template works.
  6. Test logged-out and logged-in views. Caching and conditional code can make the markup differ between visitors and administrators.
  7. Verify the service itself. Use its own verification or debug screen after the browser confirms that the code is present.

Troubleshoot the failures that occur most often

The whole site shows a critical error or a blank screen

This usually indicates invalid PHP in functions.php or a child template. Use FTP or the hosting file manager to restore the backup or remove the newest function. If you cannot identify the error, temporarily rename the child theme directory so WordPress falls back to another available theme, then repair the file and reactivate the child theme.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The snippet is not in the source

  • Confirm that the child theme containing the function is active.
  • Check that the function name in add_action exactly matches the declared function.
  • Check that the theme calls wp_head() or wp_footer().
  • Look for a conditional such as is_admin() that excludes the page you are testing.
  • Check whether a cache is serving an older document.

The snippet appears twice

Search the theme settings, child theme files, snippets and plugins for the same script or identifier. Remove all but one deliberate insertion. A browser’s Network panel can reveal duplicate requests even when the visible markup looks harmless.

The code appears in the wrong place

Move a header callback to wp_head or a footer callback to wp_footer. In a template, place the markup relative to the corresponding hook call rather than at an arbitrary line. A priority number changes order among callbacks on one hook; it does not change the hook.

The page works, but the service reports failure

Check the exact character-for-character snippet, required attributes, consent behavior and whether a security or caching layer is rewriting it. Some services require code on every public page; others require only a specific page. Follow the service’s validation instructions after confirming the markup is generated.

Security and maintenance rules

  • Install code only from a source you trust. A header or footer snippet runs for visitors and can expose data, redirect users or load unwanted resources.
  • Do not paste PHP into an HTML-only field. Conversely, do not paste a full PHP file into a JavaScript or HTML block.
  • Keep PHP syntax intact: matching braces, parentheses, semicolons and opening and closing PHP tags matter.
  • Use a child theme for manual edits so a parent-theme update does not overwrite them.
  • Review snippets after theme changes. A redesigned theme may move, remove or replace its hook calls.
  • Remove obsolete scripts rather than leaving multiple versions active. Old verification tags and loaders make future troubleshooting harder.
  • Back up before every production edit and retain a known-good copy of functions.php.

When a plugin is the better choice

If you do not have file access, cannot maintain PHP safely or need a nontechnical editing screen, a dedicated header-and-footer snippet plugin can provide that interface. The free WPCode plugin is listed in the WordPress plugin directory under the insert-headers-and-footers slug and is commonly used for this purpose. A plugin adds another dependency and migration task, so a child-theme hook remains the cleanest no-plugin option when you can manage the files safely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision guide

  • Use the theme field when your active theme clearly provides separate head and footer injection controls and you need a quick, low-risk change.
  • Use child-theme functions.php when you want the change to survive parent-theme updates without copying templates. This is the recommended manual route.
  • Use child-theme templates when exact placement in the HTML document is required or the theme’s hook behavior is unusual, and you are prepared to maintain those files.
  • Use a plugin when file access or PHP editing is not practical and the extra dependency is acceptable.

Final checklist before publishing

  1. The site has a current backup and a recovery path.
  2. The active theme is a child theme for any manual edit.
  3. Head code is attached to wp_head or placed before the template’s wp_head() call.
  4. Footer code is attached to wp_footer or placed before the template’s wp_footer() call.
  5. No parent-theme file was edited directly.
  6. The snippet appears once in generated source and loads without console errors.
  7. The home page, posts, pages and relevant custom templates have been tested.
  8. The external service confirms receipt or verification after caches are cleared.
