Why Pips may look like it has too few dominoes
Pips is a digital domino-placement puzzle: you use the available dominoes to fill the board while meeting the condition for each colored region. A tray that is cut off at the bottom of the screen can make some tiles seem missing or inaccessible. Players have reported hidden or unreachable lower rows, but those reports do not establish how often the issue occurs or prove a single cause.
A symptom-specific guide from Nerd’s Chalk, updated August 29, 2025, suggests excessive zoom as one possible explanation. That is secondary troubleshooting advice, not a confirmed diagnosis from NYT. The steps below are practical checks to try in order.
Fix a clipped domino tray in the NYT Games app
- Fully close and reopen the app. Return to the app after closing it, then check whether the full tray is visible.
- Check for an app update. Look in the App Store on iPhone or iPad, or Google Play on Android. Some players report that restarting or updating helped, but these accounts are anecdotal.
- Rotate the device. Switch between portrait and landscape and see whether the tray reflows into view.
- Check display and text scaling. On iPhone, look under Settings > Display & Brightness > Display Zoom. Menu names and locations vary on Android devices and across software versions. If the screen is magnified or text is enlarged, try reducing the setting and reopening Pips.
- Try another way to play. Open Pips on the NYT Games website, or use a different browser, to check whether the issue is limited to the current app or view.
Fix a clipped domino tray in a browser
- Refresh the page. Reopen Pips after the refresh and check the entire tray.
- Try another browser or the NYT Games app. If the tray appears correctly on another platform, the problem may be limited to the browser or view you were using; that comparison does not by itself identify the cause.
- Inspect zoom and text scaling. If the board or tray looks cropped, reduce browser zoom or mobile text scaling and check again. This is a workaround to try, not proof that scaling caused the issue.
If the dominoes are still missing
The available sources do not confirm that every “not enough dominoes” report is a bug, a zoom problem, or a synchronization failure. The New York Times’ Pips launch announcement describes the game and points to its rules, but no official NYT troubleshooting notice for this specific symptom is established here. If restarting, refreshing, rotating the screen, checking scaling, and switching platforms do not help, contact current NYT Games support and describe your device, whether you are using the app or a browser, and which tiles or part of the tray you cannot access.
