Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe fastest way to fix PEAK voice chat is to test the audio path from the bottom up: close the game, disable Voicemod, VoiceMeeter, headset processing, and mods, confirm that Windows and Steam detect the same physical microphone, then select that microphone explicitly in PEAK → Settings → Audio. Also check PEAK’s output device, Windows Volume Mixer, and whether everyone in the lobby is running the same game version.
Do not replace a working microphone yet. If it works in Windows, Steam, or another voice app, the problem is more likely to be device routing, a virtual microphone, a lobby mismatch, or a PEAK/mod compatibility issue.

First, identify what is actually broken
| Symptom | Most likely area to investigate |
|---|---|
| Nobody hears you | PEAK input selection, Windows permissions, Steam input, virtual microphone, or mute state |
| You hear nobody | PEAK output selection, Windows Volume Mixer, headset routing, or player mute state |
| You hear some players but not one | Individual mute state, lobby/session issue, version mismatch, or launch configuration |
| Your character’s mouth moves but nobody hears you | PEAK detects microphone activity, but transmission or routing is failing |
| Voice works in Discord but not PEAK | Game-specific device selection, permissions, virtual-device conflict, format issue, or a PEAK bug |
| Voice works at first, then stops | Session issue, device handoff, audio utility conflict, or driver/format problem |
| Voice fails only with mods | Mod, loader, dependency, or voice-changing software conflict |
| Friends cannot hear one another across a lobby | Different game versions, launch configurations, or a lobby-specific problem |
This distinction matters: a microphone that is not detected by Windows needs a different fix from a microphone that PEAK detects but cannot transmit.

- Close PEAK completely. Do not leave it running while changing audio devices.
- Exit Voicemod, VoiceMeeter, soundboards, mixers, and other virtual-audio utilities. Also temporarily disable headset noise suppression and similar processing.
- Check Windows microphone access. Open Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone and enable microphone access and desktop-app microphone access.
- Test the physical microphone in Windows. Open Settings → System → Sound → Input, select the intended device, and speak while watching the input meter.
- Set the same physical microphone in Steam. Open Friends & Chat, select the settings cog, choose Voice, and check the input device and level.
- Launch the normal, unmodded version of PEAK. Use a fresh lobby if possible.
- Open PEAK’s audio settings. Under Settings → Audio, explicitly select the intended microphone instead of relying on a stale Default device. Set Microphone Mode to Voice Activation for the first test.
- Test with your friends on the same game version. If only some players have a problem, leave and recreate the lobby after confirming everyone is updated.
PEAK’s developer has specifically pointed to incorrect audio-device selection, Voicemod, VoiceMeeter, Razer microphone noise suppression, muted Windows volume, version mismatches, and improperly loaded files as possible causes. The developer’s recommended early steps include restarting the game and verifying its files: PEAK developer troubleshooting guidance.

Check PEAK’s microphone and voice settings
PEAK’s settings reference lists a microphone selector and microphone modes including Voice Activation, Push To Talk, and Push To Mute. The exact labels or menu arrangement can change between builds, so look under Settings → Audio.
- Set Microphone to the physical headset or microphone you are testing.
- Do not leave the game on Default if Windows recently gained a webcam, controller, monitor, Bluetooth device, or virtual microphone.
- Use Voice Activation temporarily. This removes uncertainty about an unknown Push To Talk key or a stuck Push To Mute state.
- If Voice Activation works, test Push To Talk again and confirm the assigned key.
- If you cannot hear other players, raise Voices Volume and Master Volume.
- Leave and rejoin the lobby after changing the device. Fully restart PEAK if the new selection does not take effect.
Voice Activation is a diagnostic setting, not necessarily the best permanent choice. Push To Talk is usually preferable in a noisy room.
See the PEAK settings reference for the available audio options.

If the Windows input meter never moves, PEAK is not the primary problem yet.
- Unplug and reconnect the headset or microphone.
- Try another USB port and avoid an unpowered hub while testing.
- For a 3.5-mm headset, check the combined headset jack, splitter, and adapter.
- Test the microphone in Windows Sound Recorder or another local recorder.
- Open Settings → System → Sound → Input and choose the intended device.
- Open More sound settings → Recording and make that device the default.
- Temporarily disable unused webcam, controller, monitor, Bluetooth, and virtual microphones.
Having several enabled inputs makes it easy for Windows, Steam, and PEAK to select different devices. General PC voice-chat guidance also recommends checking physical connections, Steam’s voice device, enabled recording inputs, and sound drivers: Facepunch’s microphone troubleshooting guide.
Check Steam Voice
- Open Steam and click Friends & Chat.
- Click the settings cog.
- Open Voice.
- Choose the intended microphone explicitly.
- Speak and confirm Steam’s input meter responds.
- Check the input level and close applications that may be capturing or redirecting the microphone.
- Restart Steam and PEAK after changing the device.
One community report suggests increasing Steam’s input volume when PEAK voice is extremely quiet. Treat that as a secondary workaround, not a confirmed universal PEAK fix.

Voicemod, VoiceMeeter, and virtual microphone conflicts
PEAK’s developer has reported problems involving Voicemod and VoiceMeeter. That does not prove either program always breaks PEAK, but disabling them is one of the highest-value diagnostic tests.
- Exit PEAK.
- Exit Voicemod, VoiceMeeter, soundboards, virtual mixers, and similar utilities.
- In Windows, select the physical microphone.
- In Steam, select that same physical microphone.
- In PEAK, select it again under Settings → Audio.
- Launch vanilla PEAK and test in a fresh lobby.
- If voice works, re-enable the audio utility and deliberately select its virtual microphone in both Windows and PEAK.
- If voice fails again, use the physical microphone for PEAK or simplify the virtual device’s input/output path.
Avoid deleting drivers or registry entries as a first step. The useful question is whether PEAK works when the virtual layer is removed.
Temporarily disable headset noise suppression
Razer microphone background-noise suppression has been specifically mentioned in PEAK troubleshooting reports. Similar processing can exist in Logitech G HUB, SteelSeries Sonar, NVIDIA Broadcast, Corsair iCUE, motherboard audio suites, OBS, and Discord.
Disable noise removal, automatic gain, voice isolation, and similar microphone processing temporarily. Then test the physical microphone directly in PEAK. If that restores voice chat, re-enable processing one feature at a time to find the setting that causes the conflict. Noise suppression may improve sound quality, so this is a test rather than a recommendation to leave it disabled permanently.
Test PEAK without mods
A modded installation needs its own troubleshooting branch. Voice-changing mods are the highest-risk suspects because they directly alter the microphone pipeline, but unrelated gameplay mods or outdated loader dependencies can also cause compatibility problems after a PEAK update.
- Close PEAK.
- Launch the normal, unmodded game from Steam rather than a mod-manager profile.
- Join a fresh lobby with an unmodded player if possible.
- Confirm voice chat works.
- Re-enable mods in batches, then individually.
- Test voice after each change and identify the first mod or dependency after which it fails.
Use a clean profile or temporarily move the mod folder rather than deleting your entire configuration. Community reports describe voice returning after removing a voice mod, but those are individual reports rather than proof that every mod causes the problem. Other reports are collected in this Steam discussion and this community report.

(Turn up the mic volume and push the mute switch to “mic on” via the USB control box when testing the mic.)
A mute utility such as MicMuteToggle can add a configurable mute key and on-screen indicator, but it is not a repair tool. Because it requires BepInEx and adds another mod layer, install or test it only after vanilla voice chat works.
Make sure everyone uses the same version and launch configuration
PEAK’s developer advises that all players in a lobby use the same game version. Have everyone close Steam or PEAK as needed, update the game, and create a new lobby.
Some community reports also associate voice failures with players using different graphics/API launch options, such as Vulkan and DirectX 12. This is not established here as a universal PEAK requirement, but it is a reasonable compatibility test when only some lobby members can hear one another:
Recommended Free Tools
- Have everyone close PEAK.
- Launch every copy using the same graphics/API option.
- Join a new lobby.
- Test voice chat again.
Do not assume that Vulkan and DirectX 12 universally cannot communicate. The evidence supports testing a consistent configuration, not treating it as a guaranteed rule.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check Windows Volume Mixer and output routing
If you can transmit but cannot hear other players, the microphone may be fine. PEAK may be muted or routed to a monitor, controller, disconnected headset, or another audio device.
- Launch PEAK.
- Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and open Volume Mixer.
- Find PEAK and confirm it is not muted.
- Raise its application volume.
- Confirm its output device is the headset or speakers you are actually using.
- Check PEAK’s Voices Volume and Master Volume.
- Test another output device, then switch back if necessary.
Pay particular attention to USB headsets, HDMI monitors, Bluetooth headphones, SteelSeries Sonar, wireless dongles, and controllers with headphone jacks.

Advanced fix for audio interfaces and studio microphones
Audio interfaces can expose multiple channels or unusual formats. If Windows and Steam detect the interface but PEAK does not transmit correctly, try simplifying the input path:
- Open More sound settings → Recording.
- Open the microphone or interface’s Properties.
- Under Advanced, try a standard format such as 2-channel, 16-bit, 44,100 Hz or 2-channel, 16-bit, 48,000 Hz.
- For an interface, expose one clear microphone input rather than several competing channels.
- Apply the change and restart PEAK.
This is an anecdotal workaround reported by a Focusrite user, not an official PEAK requirement. Do not change the format if the microphone already works everywhere and the failure is clearly a lobby or output problem. Bluetooth headsets may also switch between stereo and hands-free profiles when their microphone is active; wired or USB testing can reveal whether that profile change is involved.
Verify PEAK’s files
PEAK’s developer recommends restarting the game and verifying its files for audio problems.
- Open your Steam Library.
- Right-click PEAK.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, then restart Steam and PEAK.
Steam’s labels can change slightly between client versions. Verification is more informative than immediately reinstalling because it repairs missing or corrupted game files without discarding your broader setup.
If nobody hears you
- Confirm Windows’ input meter moves.
- Confirm Steam detects the same microphone.
- Select the microphone explicitly in PEAK.
- Test Voice Activation.
- Check Push To Talk and Push To Mute state.
- Disable Voicemod, VoiceMeeter, headset processing, and mods.
- Check whether you are muted in the lobby.
- Test a fresh lobby with everyone on the same game version.
- Try a second microphone before buying replacement hardware.
If you cannot hear anyone
- Raise PEAK’s Voices and Master Volume.
- Check PEAK in Windows Volume Mixer.
- Confirm PEAK’s output is the active headset or speakers.
- Check Windows’ current output device.
- Check individual player mute states.
- Test a different output device.
- Leave and recreate the lobby.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Restart the PC.
- Update or reinstall the relevant audio driver through the device manufacturer.
- Temporarily test running PEAK as administrator.
- If there is evidence of security software blocking the game, add a specific PEAK or Steam exception rather than permanently disabling antivirus.
These are less targeted than fixing device routing and should not be your first move.
When to stop troubleshooting
If the microphone works in Windows and Steam but fails in a clean PEAK launch for multiple players, the remaining cause may be a PEAK bug or a current compatibility issue. Record the PEAK build, Windows version, microphone and headset model, audio utilities, mod loader and profile, launch option, exact symptom, and whether the problem occurs in a new lobby. Use that information when reporting the issue through PEAK’s official support or bug-report channels.
Buying a new microphone is justified only if the current device also fails in Windows or other applications. A working device should not need replacement solely because PEAK cannot currently route it correctly.
