The secure fix for 500 OOPS: vsftpd: refusing to run with writable root inside chroot() is to make the chroot directory non-writable by the FTP account, then create a writable child directory for uploads. In practice, identify the jail root, assign it to root, remove write permission, create an upload subdirectory with narrowly scoped write access, and restart vsftpd. Only set allow_writeable_chroot=YES when a documented application requirement makes a writable jail root unavoidable, because that option disables an important security check.

What the error means
vsftpd is refusing to start a session because the directory selected as the user’s chroot root can be written by that same user. A chroot changes the apparent filesystem root for the FTP process. If the account can alter that root, it can potentially place files and directories where the daemon expects configuration data. The vsftpd configuration reference specifically warns that a writable chroot can let a user create an etc directory and influence configuration-file loading.

The setting controlling this check is allow_writeable_chroot. Its default is NO, which means vsftpd rejects a writable jail root. The project FAQ gives the same operational rule: the FTP user’s home directory should not be owned by that user and should not be writable by that user. ArchWiki dates the enforced behavior to vsftpd 2.3.5, so an upgrade can expose a permission layout that older packages accepted.
The message concerns the root of the jail, not every directory beneath it. You can keep uploads enabled by making a child directory writable while leaving the chroot root itself protected.

Find the directory vsftpd is using as the jail root
Do not change permissions until you know which path is being checked. Depending on the deployment, the root is set explicitly with local_root, inherited from the user’s home directory, or generated by a platform-specific configuration layer.
- Open the active vsftpd configuration and look for
local_root. If it is present, the value is normally the jail root for matching local users. A value containing a per-user token may resolve to a different path for each account, so inspect the expanded path for the account that fails. - Check whether a per-user configuration directory is enabled. A global
user_config_dircauses files in that directory to override or add settings for individual users. Read the user’s file as well as the global file. - If no
local_rootis set, resolve the local account’s home directory from the system account database. That home directory is commonly used as the chroot root whenchroot_local_useror an equivalent policy is enabled. - On a managed appliance, identify the generated or template-backed configuration rather than editing only a temporary runtime copy. Platform documentation may define a different path or regeneration process.
Inspect ownership and mode on the candidate path before changing it:
sudo stat -c '%A %a %U:%G %n' /path/to/jail-root
sudo namei -l /path/to/jail-rootstat shows the final directory’s owner, group and numeric mode. namei walks every parent directory, which helps find a parent that prevents traversal even after the final directory is corrected. Replace the example path with the actual value used by the failing account.
Preferred fix: protect the jail root and move writes into a child directory
1. Back up the configuration and record the current permissions
Save the active configuration and capture the existing ownership before making changes. This gives you a rollback point if a legacy workflow depends on an unexpected path.
sudo cp -a /etc/vsftpd.conf /etc/vsftpd.conf.before-chroot-fix
sudo stat -c '%A %a %U:%G %n' /path/to/jail-rootIf your distribution stores the configuration elsewhere, use that location. On systems with per-user files, back up the applicable file in the same way.
2. Make the chroot root owned by root and remove user write access
The jail root must be traversable but not writable by the FTP account. The vsftpd FAQ illustrates this with chown root ~ftp followed by chmod -w ~ftp. Dell’s documented equivalent is chmod a-w /home/user, with the path replaced by the real jail root.

sudo chown root:root /path/to/jail-root
sudo chmod a-w /path/to/jail-rootIf the existing group is intentionally used for traversal, preserve that group instead of changing it unnecessarily:
sudo chown root:existing-group /path/to/jail-root
sudo chmod 550 /path/to/jail-rootMode 550 gives the owner and group read and search permission while removing write permission. Choose a mode that lets the daemon and the intended account traverse the directory but does not grant write access to the FTP user. Verify the result:
sudo stat -c '%A %a %U:%G %n' /path/to/jail-rootDo not rely on the displayed owner alone. A user can still write through group or other permissions, so check all three permission classes and any access-control policy used by your operating system.
3. Create a writable child for uploads
Create a subdirectory below the protected root and grant write permission only there. The ArchWiki pattern uses a non-writable /srv/ftp/user jail root and a writable /srv/ftp/user/upload child, with modes 550 and 750 respectively.

sudo mkdir -p /path/to/jail-root/upload
sudo chown ftp-account:ftp-group /path/to/jail-root/upload
sudo chmod 750 /path/to/jail-root/uploadReplace ftp-account and ftp-group with the account and group that should own uploaded files. If the daemon writes as a different effective user, use a group that includes that user or assign an equivalent ACL; do not make the entire jail writable simply to solve an ownership mismatch.

Inside the FTP session, the user sees the jail root as / and the child as /upload. The account can upload there without being able to create an etc directory at the jail root.

4. Point the application at the child directory
Update the client, job or application that performs uploads so it uses /upload (or the corresponding child name) rather than attempting to write directly to /. If the application cannot be changed, create a dedicated child path matching its expected directory name, provided that path remains below the protected root.
5. Reload or restart vsftpd
Use the service mechanism supplied by your Linux distribution. Common systems use one of these commands:

sudo systemctl restart vsftpd
sudo systemctl reload vsftpdA restart is the safest way to ensure all worker processes use the corrected settings. A reload may be sufficient for a configuration-only change, but it does not replace a restart when the distribution’s service unit documents otherwise. Check the service status and logs immediately after the operation:
sudo systemctl status vsftpd
sudo journalctl -u vsftpd --since '10 minutes ago'If your platform does not use systemd, invoke its documented init or service command instead. Managed appliances may require applying a configuration template and restarting the platform service rather than editing /etc/vsftpd.conf directly.
Verify login, isolation and uploads
Test with an account that previously produced the error. A useful test separates the security boundary from the upload function.
- Log in through the FTP client and confirm that the session opens without the
500 OOPSmessage. - List the session root and confirm that the expected child directory, such as
/upload, is visible. - Upload a small test file to
/upload. Confirm the resulting owner, group and mode on the server. - Attempt to create a file or directory directly in
/. The operation should fail with a permission error. - Attempt to change directory to a path above the jail, such as
..repeatedly. The client should remain inside the chroot. - Remove the test file using the intended account or an administrator, according to your retention policy.
If login succeeds but upload fails, the chroot check is fixed; investigate the child directory’s owner, group, mode, filesystem ACLs and any mandatory access-control policy. If login still fails with the same message, inspect the actual resolved local_root and every per-user override rather than assuming the path you changed is the one vsftpd checked.

When a writable chroot root is unavoidable
Some legacy applications expect to create files or directories directly at the account’s apparent root. In that case, the documented override is:
allow_writeable_chroot=YESIt can be placed in the global configuration or in a per-user configuration, depending on how your deployment separates accounts. The setting tells vsftpd to allow chrooting into a directory writable by the user. Dell presents this as a second option after removing write permission, while the vsftpd configuration reference warns that it can create security problems.
Use the override only after documenting why a writable root is required and reducing the surrounding risk:
- Prefer a per-user setting so accounts that do not need the legacy behavior retain the default protection.
- Limit the account to the smallest possible filesystem tree and avoid sharing that tree with service configuration or executable files.
- Review who can modify files in the jail, including supplementary groups, inherited permissions and ACLs.
- Monitor uploads and configuration changes, and keep the account’s credentials and network exposure under stricter control than ordinary users.
- Revisit the application design; moving writes into a child directory is safer than permanently weakening the chroot check.
Do not combine allow_writeable_chroot=YES with broad write permissions merely to suppress the startup error. The option removes the specific refusal; it does not make a writable jail root safe by itself.

Choose the protected-root design unless a tested requirement proves that the child-directory layout cannot work. Treat the override as a compatibility exception with an owner, a review date and a written threat assessment.

The refusal is associated with vsftpd 2.3.5 and later guidance that the directory users are locked into must not be writable. A server upgraded from an older package can therefore fail even though its configuration file did not change: the newer daemon is enforcing a rule that the previous version did not enforce in the same way.

Dell documents the same symptom after OneFS upgrades that moved from older to newer vsftpd packages. On managed platforms, edits made directly to a generated configuration template may not persist across a subsequent upgrade. Record the intended ownership, modes and allow_writeable_chroot scope in the platform’s supported configuration mechanism, then verify them after every upgrade.

- Whether
local_root,chroot_local_useror per-user files changed. - Whether the jail root is still owned by root and has no write bit for the FTP account, its groups or others.
- Whether the writable child still has the expected owner, group and mode.
- Whether the service starts cleanly and the upload and isolation tests still pass.
Troubleshooting branches
The root appears non-writable, but the error remains
Check for group or ACL write access. A mode such as 775 is writable by the group or by others even when the owner is root. Inspect ACLs with the tools provided by your operating system, and inspect every parent directory with namei -l. Also verify that you changed the resolved path, not a symlink target or an unused copy of the configuration.
The service starts, but the user cannot log in
Confirm that every directory in the path grants search permission to the account or its effective group. A mode of 550 on the jail root is useful only when the daemon can traverse it. Check the account’s home path, the configured local_root, and service logs for a second, unrelated authentication or permission error.
Login works, but uploads fail in the child
Verify the child directory’s owner and group from the server, then test creation as the same effective user used by vsftpd. A writable child with mode 750 is not writable to an account that is neither its owner nor in its group. Correct that ownership or group membership instead of making the jail root writable.
The fix disappears after reboot or upgrade
Find the authoritative configuration source. A package post-install script, appliance template or configuration-management run may restore the old mode or remove the setting. Apply the change through that supported source and add a post-upgrade check for the jail root and upload directory.

Give each account a separate non-writable jail root and a separate writable child whenever possible. Sharing a writable root couples users’ security boundaries and makes it harder to prove which account can alter a file. If shared storage is unavoidable, document the group and ACL design and test cross-account visibility explicitly.
Operational checklist
- Identify the exact chroot root resolved for the affected user.
- Ensure the root is owned by root and is not writable through owner, group, other permissions or ACLs.
- Create a writable child directory for uploads and assign only the required account or group.
- Keep
allow_writeable_chroot=NOunless a specific compatibility requirement has been approved. - Restart or reload through the distribution or appliance’s supported service mechanism.
- Test login, upload to the child, failed write at the root and confinement from parent directories.
- Persist the ownership, modes and configuration in the authoritative deployment system.
- Repeat the checks after package or platform upgrades, especially when moving to vsftpd 2.3.5 or later from an older release.
Bottom line
vsftpd is rejecting a writable security boundary, not disabling uploads in general. Keep the chroot root root-owned and non-writable, place uploads in a controlled child directory, and reserve allow_writeable_chroot=YES for narrowly justified legacy cases. This layout satisfies the daemon’s post-2.3.5 protection while preserving normal FTP upload workflows.
