Why WordPress stops loading after a MySQL password change
WordPress reads its database credentials from wp-config.php when it starts. Changing a MySQL user’s password changes what the database server accepts; it does not automatically rewrite the WordPress file on your web server. Until both sides contain the same password, WordPress cannot authenticate and commonly displays Error establishing a database connection.
WordPress documentation describes this message as usually resulting from incorrect information in wp-config.php. The values to verify are the database name, database username, database password, and database host. A required nonstandard port belongs in the host value as well.

The safest approach is to treat this as a controlled configuration change: identify the exact database account, back up the production configuration, edit only the necessary value, verify the complete set of connection details, and then use logs or your host’s checks rather than guessing.
First confirm which password changed
Distinguish the database account from a hosting login
Hosting dashboards often have several unrelated passwords. A panel, FTP, SSH, email, or administrator password may have changed while the MySQL user used by WordPress remained untouched. Conversely, you may have reset a different MySQL user in the same account.
- Open the hosting panel’s database section or ask the host which MySQL user is assigned to the WordPress database.
- Compare that username with the value of
DB_USERin the productionwp-config.php. - Confirm that the password reset was performed for that exact MySQL user and for the database server named by
DB_HOST.
If the username in the file and the account you reset do not match, changing the file to the new password for the wrong account will not help. Either update the correct MySQL user or change WordPress to use an account that actually has access to the database.
Back up the live configuration before editing
Make a recoverable copy
Download or copy wp-config.php before making any change. WordPress migration guidance recommends keeping a backup copy before configuration work. Store it somewhere private because it contains database credentials, and do not place it in a publicly accessible directory.
Open the production file, not a staging or old copy
Use the host’s file manager, FTP, or SSH to reach the document root of the live installation. The relevant file is the wp-config.php in the WordPress root directory; editing a local development copy, a staging site, or an unused backup will not change the running site.

If your host has multiple domains or WordPress installations, identify the one associated with the failing domain before you edit. Check the file’s modification time and the directory that the domain’s document-root setting points to when the layout is ambiguous.

Update every database connection field
Verify the four core values
Compare the file with the database details shown by your host. Use the exact names and spelling supplied by the provider.

Include a required nonstandard port
Some providers require a port in addition to the hostname. Follow the provider’s format, commonly a host-and-port value such as db.example.net:3307. Do not append a port simply because the site is failing; use one only when the provider specifies it. A correct password paired with an incorrect host or port still produces a connection error.
Preserve the existing PHP syntax
Edit the value inside the existing define statement rather than rewriting the file. Keep the quotes, commas, semicolons, character encoding, and surrounding configuration unchanged. For example, the relevant lines should retain this form:
define( 'DB_NAME', 'database_name' );
define( 'DB_USER', 'database_user' );
define( 'DB_PASSWORD', 'new-password' );
define( 'DB_HOST', 'database-host' );The names above are examples of the syntax, not values to copy into your site. A missing quote or semicolon can create a PHP parse error, resulting in a blank page or a PHP error instead of a database message. If you are uncertain, restore the backup and make one small change at a time.

Test the site after saving
Check both public and administrative requests
- Save the edited file with its original filename and permissions.
- Open the public homepage in a private browser window or a separate browser session.
- Open
/wp-admin/and sign in if prompted. - Load a page that reads posts or other database content, not only a static file.
If the front end and dashboard both work, the database connection is restored. Clear only relevant page or object caches afterward if old output remains. Browser cache cannot repair invalid server credentials, so clearing it before the connection works is not a substitute for fixing the configuration.
Allow for the correct cache layer
After a successful connection, purge a server page cache, reverse-proxy cache, or object cache only when necessary and according to the host’s controls. Do not repeatedly purge caches while WordPress is still reporting a connection failure; caching does not change the credentials used by PHP.

Use the exact symptom to choose the next check instead of changing several values at once.

Check for secondary database connections
Search custom WordPress code
WordPress core normally uses the values in wp-config.php, but custom code can open another connection. Check custom plugins, must-use plugins, themes, scheduled-job scripts, deployment environment files, and secret-management settings. Look for connection constructors, environment variables, or separate configuration files containing a database host, user, password, or port.
A WordPress support case documented a custom plugin with its own connection file; updating only wp-config.php left that feature broken. This explains the common pattern in which the homepage and dashboard work while a reporting page, import tool, or other custom function still fails.

Do not expose credentials while searching
Use your host’s private file tools or a secure shell session, restrict access to configuration files, and remove temporary copies after the repair. Never paste a real password into a public ticket, browser-based code sample, or log message.
Ask the host to verify server-side conditions
Confirm that the database service is reachable
If all four values match the provider’s records, ask support whether the database server is running and accepting connections from the web server. A service outage, maintenance event, network restriction, or wrong server hostname can look identical to a bad password from WordPress’s point of view.
Confirm privileges for the MySQL user
Request confirmation that the exact DB_USER is still assigned to DB_NAME and retains the required privileges. A password reset or account change can be accompanied by a lost database assignment. The username and password can therefore be correct while authentication to the required database still fails.

Check quotas and account limits
WordPress identifies host quota problems and server availability as possible causes of database errors. Ask whether storage, inode, connection, or database quotas have been reached and whether the host has suspended or restricted the database service. Resolve the host-side condition before continuing to edit application files.

Enable controlled debugging
A blank page does not prove that the password is wrong. After preserving your backup, enable debugging according to your environment and inspect wp-content/debug.log for the actual database or PHP message. A typical WordPress configuration uses debugging constants in wp-config.php; follow your host’s policy for where those constants belong and whether logging is permitted on production.

Do not leave public error display enabled on a live site because it can reveal paths, queries, or credentials. Once you have identified the cause, turn public display off and retain only the logging level appropriate for your environment. Review the PHP and web-server logs as well when debug.log is empty or cannot be written.
Interpret the first useful error
Look for the earliest database authentication, connection, permission, or PHP parse error around the time of the failed request. A parse error points back to the edit itself; an authentication error points to the account values; a timeout or refused connection points toward the host, port, or service. Fix that specific condition before testing again.
Recover from common editing mistakes
You deleted or renamed wp-config.php
Restore the backup immediately. Removing the file can cause WordPress to start its installation routine because it no longer sees the existing database configuration. Do not enter setup details into that screen for an established site; doing so can create a second configuration path and does not repair the original connection.
You introduced a syntax error
Replace the edited file with the backup, confirm that the site returns to its previous behavior, and then change only the password value. Keep the original line endings and encoding where possible. A syntax error must be corrected before database troubleshooting can produce meaningful results.
You edited the wrong installation
Check the domain’s document root and repeat the change in the wp-config.php used by that production instance. Multiple sites in one account often have different database names and users; a successful edit in one directory has no effect on another.

- Record which MySQL user and database belong to each production WordPress installation before rotating a password.
- Keep an encrypted, private backup of
wp-config.phpand a documented rollback procedure. - Schedule a password rotation with a maintenance window so the database credential and application configuration can be changed together.
- Search approved custom code and deployment settings for secondary connections before declaring the rotation complete.
- Test the public site,
/wp-admin/, and important database-backed custom features after every rotation. - Keep logging available for diagnosis, but avoid exposing PHP errors or credentials to visitors.
