Install Munin as a two-part system: a master collects metrics and generates graphs, while a munin-node process exposes metrics from each monitored VPS. On a small setup, one VPS can run both roles. On Debian or Ubuntu, install the munin package on the reporting VPS and munin-node on every VPS you want to monitor, restrict TCP port 4949 to the master, register each node in /etc/munin/munin.conf, and enable the plugins you need.

This guide gives a complete Debian/Ubuntu workflow, including firewall rules, Apache report access, plugin discovery, multi-node registration, and fixes for missing or empty graphs.

How Munin is arranged

Munin is not a single daemon that automatically discovers every server. It has a collector-and-reporting role and a monitored-node role.

The master

The master runs collection jobs, stores the resulting time-series data, and builds the HTML reports and graphs. The official Munin documentation describes installing munin-master on the machine that collects data and graphs results. Debian and Ubuntu package that role conveniently as munin.

The node

A node runs munin-node. It listens for requests from the master, executes enabled Munin plugins, and returns the current values. The default listener is TCP port 4949. A monitored VPS normally runs a node even when the master is hosted elsewhere.

Running both roles on one VPS

For self-monitoring, install both packages on one VPS. The local node supplies that server’s metrics, while the master schedules collection and publishes reports. For several VPSs, place the master on one administration or monitoring server and install only munin-node on the others.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan the deployment before installing

Decide which machine will host the reports and which machines will be monitored. Write down the address the master will use to reach every node. A private address is preferable when the VPSs share a private network; otherwise use the node’s public address and lock the firewall to the master’s public address.

  • Master VPS: receives node connections, stores data, and serves reports.
  • Node VPS: exposes metrics on TCP 4949 and runs plugins.
  • Viewer network: the IP address or network from which administrators will open the reports.

Check that the operating system uses Debian or Ubuntu package repositories and that you have an account with sudo privileges. Package names, service names, and log locations can vary slightly with the distribution image, so verify the installed unit and paths on the image you actually deploy.

Install Munin packages on Debian or Ubuntu

Install the master

Log in to the VPS that will collect data and run the reports:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install munin

The package creates the Munin master configuration and the report-generation components used by Debian or Ubuntu. If this same VPS should monitor itself, install the node package there as well, following the node step below.

Install a node on each monitored VPS

On every VPS whose metrics should appear in Munin, run:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install munin-node

Installing munin-node does not register the server with a master. Registration is a separate configuration step on the master, and access control is a separate step on the node.

Installing both packages for a one-server setup

On a single self-monitoring VPS, run both installation commands. The master and node communicate locally, but leave the node’s access rule explicit rather than relying on an assumption that local traffic is always safe.

Restrict the node listener to the master

The node reference documents TCP 4949 as the default listening port. A node should accept requests only from the Munin master; exposing 4949 to the entire internet allows anyone who can connect to request plugin output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use an address regular expression

Edit /etc/munin/munin-node.conf on the node and add an allow rule for the master’s address. For a master at 203.0.113.10:

allow ^203.0.113.10$

The dots are escaped so they match literal dots, and the anchors prevent the rule from matching a longer address that merely contains the same text.

Use CIDR notation

The same single-host permission can be written with cidr_allow:

cidr_allow 203.0.113.10/32

For one IPv4 host, the /32 is required. If the master has a different address, substitute that exact address. Do not replace a single-host rule with a broad network unless every address in that network is trusted to act as a Munin master.

Apply the node configuration

After saving the file, restart the node:

sudo systemctl restart munin-node.service

Check the package service status and its logs immediately after a restart. Syntax errors, permission problems, and failed plugins are easier to correct before you add more nodes.

Close the firewall around TCP 4949

The allow or cidr_allow directive controls what the Munin node accepts, but a network firewall should enforce the same boundary. In the VPS firewall or cloud security group, create an inbound rule that permits TCP port 4949 from the master’s private or public IP only.

  • Permit: TCP destination port 4949.
  • Source: the single master address, or a tightly controlled monitoring subnet.
  • Default: deny other internet sources.

When the master and node are on different providers, confirm that both the provider security group and the operating-system firewall allow the connection. A rule in only one of those layers is not sufficient. If you move the master, update the node allow list and every firewall rule together.

Register each node in the master configuration

On the master, edit /etc/munin/munin.conf. Add one node block for each monitored VPS. The bracketed name is the label shown in reports; the address is the address the master can actually reach.

[web-01.example]
    address 203.0.113.20

Choose the displayed name

Use a stable, recognizable hostname such as web-01.example, database-01, or vps-london-1. The display name does not have to be the node’s DNS name, but changing it later creates a new report identity and makes historical graphs harder to find.

Choose the reachable address

Set address to the node’s private address when routing exists between the VPSs. Otherwise use its public address. The value must match the route and firewall rule, not merely an address listed in the provider dashboard.

Add more nodes

Repeat the block for every node:

[web-02.example]
    address 203.0.113.21

[db-01.example]
    address 203.0.113.22

Keep each bracketed name unique. A typo in either the block name or address can leave one host without data while the rest of the deployment works.

Choose and enable Munin plugins

Plugins are the collectors that provide CPU, memory, disk, network, process, and service metrics. They are exposed through symlinks in /etc/munin/plugins; a plugin file elsewhere on the system is not active until its link appears in that directory.

Ask Munin for compatible suggestions

On each node, inspect what the installed system supports:

sudo munin-node-configure --suggest

Review the suggestions rather than enabling every possible collector. A plugin may require a package, a service, a mounted filesystem, or permission to read a status file that does not exist on your VPS.

Apply automatic suggestions

The Munin documentation provides this command for applying suggestions from the contrib and auto families:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo munin-node-configure --shell --families=contrib,auto | sudo sh -x

Read the generated commands before accepting them on a production server. Automatic linking is convenient, but it can enable collectors you do not need or that expose data about software you intended to keep private.

Confirm the links

List /etc/munin/plugins and verify that the expected symlinks exist. If a plugin is absent, rerun the suggestion command, inspect its prerequisites, and create or remove the link according to the result. Restart munin-node after adding or removing links because the node discovers its plugin set at restart.

Restart services and verify collection

Restart the node after changes

On each node:

sudo systemctl restart munin-node.service
sudo systemctl status munin-node.service

If the status reports a failure, inspect the unit’s logs using the logging tools provided by your distribution. Look for malformed configuration lines, unreadable plugin files, missing interpreters, and permission-denied messages.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

Check the master configuration

On the master, confirm that the node block is in /etc/munin/munin.conf, the address is reachable, and the name is unique. A master can generate its own reports while silently failing to collect a newly added node, so verify the new host specifically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Allow time for the first samples

Newly installed reports do not contain historical data immediately. Leave the collection jobs running long enough for samples to be gathered and for graph files to be generated. A blank graph immediately after installation is expected; a blank graph that remains after successful collection indicates a configuration, connectivity, or plugin problem.

Serve Munin reports with Apache on Ubuntu

Ubuntu’s documented Munin server example uses Apache2 to publish the generated reports. Install Apache2 on the report-hosting VPS if it is not already present, then use the Munin package’s Apache configuration rather than inventing a separate document root.

sudo apt update
sudo apt install apache2

The package normally installs an Apache configuration for Munin. Enable or reload the web server according to the configuration supplied by your Ubuntu package, then open the report URL from the monitoring machine.

Allow remote viewers deliberately

Ubuntu’s example protects the report location with an Apache Require local rule. That allows only a browser running on the report VPS. If administrators must view reports from another machine, change the Munin Apache access rules to permit only the intended viewer IP address or network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not replace a local-only rule with unrestricted access. Reports can reveal hostnames, interfaces, storage layout, process activity, and service load. Keep the viewer allow list as narrow as the 4949 node rule, and put additional authentication or a private network in front of the reports when your environment requires it.

Deployment choices at a glance

Decision Option When it fits Important consequence
Munin role Master plus node on one VPS Self-monitoring or a small test deployment The same machine collects, stores, and serves its own metrics.
Munin role Dedicated master with remote nodes Several VPSs or a central operations view Every node must permit the master’s address and the firewall must pass TCP 4949.
Package method Debian/Ubuntu packages Supported distribution images Install munin for the master and munin-node for monitored machines.
Report server Apache2 Ubuntu’s documented example Review the supplied access rule; remote browsers may need an explicit IP allowance.
Node exposure IP-restricted TCP 4949 Normal production operation Use allow or cidr_allow plus a matching firewall rule.
Node exposure Broad or internet-wide access Generally unsuitable It enlarges the attack surface and is unnecessary for a single master.

Troubleshoot missing, empty, or incomplete graphs

No data for a node

  1. On the master, recheck the node block in /etc/munin/munin.conf and confirm that the address is the node’s reachable address.
  2. From the network path between the servers, verify that TCP 4949 is permitted by the VPS firewall, cloud security group, and any intermediate firewall.
  3. On the node, confirm that allow or cidr_allow matches the master’s actual source address. A private-to-public routing change can make a previously correct rule fail.
  4. Restart munin-node.service after editing the node configuration and inspect its status and logs.

Graphs are empty immediately after installation

Collection starts without historical records. Wait for the scheduled jobs to collect samples and generate the first report files. If the graph remains empty after collection has had time to run, continue with the connectivity and plugin checks rather than treating the initial blank area as data loss.

A metric or graph is missing

  1. Run sudo munin-node-configure --suggest on the affected node.
  2. Check whether the expected symlink exists in /etc/munin/plugins.
  3. Install any prerequisite package or start the service required by that plugin.
  4. Restart munin-node.service so the node reloads its plugin set.
  5. Inspect node logs for execution, permission, or interpreter errors.

Only some plugins fail

Munin can collect available plugins while one plugin fails. Treat each failed collector independently: verify its file permissions, command path, service endpoint, and required user privileges. Disable a collector that is not applicable to the VPS instead of leaving a repeated error in the logs.

The browser is denied

If the report page returns an access-denied response, inspect the Apache Munin configuration. Ubuntu’s example uses Require local; add only the administrator’s intended IP address or network when remote viewing is needed. This web-server rule is separate from the node’s TCP 4949 rule, so fixing one does not automatically fix the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Operate Munin safely after installation

  • Keep the node listener limited to the current master address. Update both munin-node.conf and firewall rules when that address changes.
  • Use stable node names in munin.conf so historical reports remain easy to locate.
  • Review plugin suggestions before enabling them, especially on hosts that run sensitive services.
  • After package upgrades, check the node service and report generation rather than assuming an upgrade preserved every local customization.
  • Restrict Apache report access to the people and networks that need it.
  • Document whether each node is reached over a private or public address; this makes future firewall and routing changes less error-prone.

Installation checklist

  1. Select a master VPS and decide which machines will run nodes.
  2. Install munin on the master and munin-node on every monitored VPS.
  3. On each node, add the master’s address with allow or cidr_allow in /etc/munin/munin-node.conf.
  4. Allow TCP 4949 only from the master in every relevant firewall or security group.
  5. Add a uniquely named node block and reachable address to /etc/munin/munin.conf.
  6. Run munin-node-configure --suggest, enable suitable plugins, and restart munin-node.service.
  7. Install and configure Apache2 on the report host if you need the Ubuntu-style web interface.
  8. Adjust Apache’s Require local rule only when remote viewing is required, and permit only the intended viewer addresses.
  9. Allow collection time, then verify node data, plugin output, and report access separately.
