If WordPress says it cannot create wp-content/uploads or cannot move an uploaded file, fix the effective access available to the PHP/web-server process—not just the number displayed by an FTP client. Directories commonly use 755 and files 644, but the correct result also depends on ownership, group membership, ACLs, PHP execution users, and host security policy.

Work only on the uploads path first, record its current owner, group, and modes, and test after every change. Do not use 777: broad write access can turn a compromised upload or modified file into a path to the entire WordPress installation and database.

What the error is actually telling you
WordPress uploads pass through several filesystem checkpoints. The wording of the error helps identify which checkpoint failed, but it does not by itself identify the correct permission change.

A folder can display 755 and still fail. The owner has read, write, and traverse access, while members of the group and everyone else have only read and traverse access. If PHP runs as a different account that is not an allowed group member, it cannot create a file there. An ACL, SELinux or AppArmor rule, container mount, or managed-host policy can also deny an operation that mode bits appear to permit.

Before changing anything
- Keep an administrator session open. Do not sign out of
wp-adminuntil a normal dashboard page and a media upload have both worked. - Make a backup or record the current state. Save the owner, group, and mode for
wp-content/uploadsand the failing year/month directory. A terminal record, screenshot from the host file manager, or support ticket is enough if it is accurate. - Use a filesystem access method. SFTP, SSH, or the hosting control panel’s file manager is appropriate. Editing WordPress core files in
wp-admindoes not repair filesystem access and can make recovery harder. - Confirm the configured uploads path. The visible directory may not be the path WordPress is using. Check the site’s media settings and the host’s document-root layout before changing a folder.
Do not begin with a recursive permission change across the entire WordPress tree. A broad change can make plugins, themes, configuration files, or core files writable when they should not be.
Inspect effective access, not just the displayed mode
Find the failing directory
List the uploads directory and its children. The failing location is often a year/month directory such as wp-content/uploads/2026/10, not the top-level folder alone.
ls -ld wp-content/uploads
find wp-content/uploads -maxdepth 2 -type d -printUse the equivalent inspection functions in a control-panel file manager if SSH is unavailable. Record the owner, group, and mode for the top-level directory, the year directory, and the month directory that WordPress is trying to use.
Check every parent directory
The PHP process needs execute (traverse) access on each parent directory in the path, including the site document root and wp-content. A correctly writable month directory is still unreachable if a parent blocks traversal. Inspect the complete path rather than changing only the final directory.

Identify the account that runs PHP
On shared hosting with suexec, PHP-FPM, Apache, or Nginx, the account executing PHP may differ from the account that owns the files. Ask the host or inspect the PHP-FPM pool and web-server configuration for the execution user. In a container, also verify that the uploads path is mounted read-write inside the PHP container; a host-side mode change cannot make a read-only mount writable.
Look beyond mode bits
- Owner and group: A mode of
755permits writing only to the owner. The PHP account must own the directory or belong to the group that has write access under the host’s model. - ACLs: An access-control list can add or remove rights beyond the basic owner/group/other bits. If the host uses ACLs, inspect them rather than deleting them to force a result.
- Mandatory security policy: SELinux, AppArmor, or a provider’s isolation policy can deny writes even when Unix permissions look correct.
- Mount and filesystem state: A read-only mount, full disk, inode exhaustion, or a quota can produce a write failure that chmod cannot solve.
When logs are available, compare the timestamp of the failed upload with PHP and web-server entries. The log often names the account or policy that was denied.
Apply the smallest safe correction
Use conventional modes only when the host model supports them
For a conventional single-site installation, directories commonly use 755 and files 644. These values are a baseline, not a guarantee. They work when the PHP process is the directory owner or has an appropriate group or ACL. If the host deliberately uses a different execution model, follow that model instead of forcing these numbers.

find wp-content/uploads -type d -exec chmod 755 {} ;
find wp-content/uploads -type f -exec chmod 644 {} ;These commands change every directory and file below the path, so review the scope before running them. They do not fix incorrect ownership, group membership, ACLs, or mandatory security policy. Do not run them blindly from a directory that contains more than the intended uploads path.
Correct ownership or group deliberately
If PHP is not the owner, determine which account should own uploads under your host’s design. Some shared hosts expect the site user to own the files; others use a web-server group; managed platforms may provision a special service account. Change ownership or group only after the host confirms the required account. Applying a guessed account can remove your SFTP access or make other deployment tasks fail.

If group-based access is the intended design, verify that the PHP account is actually a member of that group and that the directory’s group permission includes writing. Record the original owner and group before changing them so the operation can be reversed.
Handle ACL and security-policy denials at their source
If an ACL grants or denies access, edit the ACL through the host’s documented mechanism rather than repeatedly changing chmod values. For SELinux, AppArmor, container mounts, or provider isolation, the host administrator must adjust the policy or mount. A local WordPress administrator cannot safely override those controls from the dashboard.

How the repair differs by hosting model

The access method changes the procedure but not the principle: the PHP process must be able to traverse the path and write the required directory or file.
Repair through the available access method
SFTP or FTP client
- Open the site’s document root and navigate to
wp-content/uploads. - Inspect the permissions, owner, and group fields if the client exposes them. A client may show only mode bits, so do not assume it provides the full effective-access picture.
- Inspect the specific year/month directory named in the error.
- Change only the failing directory or file to the host-approved baseline, then save.
- If ownership cannot be changed in the client, stop and ask the host rather than trying
777.
SSH
- Change to the WordPress document root and inspect the path with
ls -ldand the directory listing commands shown above. - Compare the recorded owner and group with the PHP execution account.
- Apply the narrow mode correction to
wp-content/uploadsor its failing year/month directory. Use the recursive commands only when you have verified that every item below that path should receive the same baseline. - Do not change the entire WordPress installation recursively unless the host’s documented procedure specifically requires it.
Control-panel file manager
- Use the file manager’s permission editor on the uploads path, not on the whole account.
- Look for separate owner/group controls or an ACL panel. If those controls are unavailable, the provider may be managing them centrally.
- Save the original values in the support ticket or your change record before applying the correction.
Test each layer after every change
- Upload a small image through Media > Add New.
- Open the Media Library and confirm the new item appears and its thumbnail or attachment details load.
- Visit a normal
wp-adminpage, such as the dashboard, posts list, or settings screen, to ensure the change did not affect administrative access. - Repeat the test with the next year/month directory only if WordPress creates one during the upload.
- Review PHP and web-server logs for warnings, denied operations, quota errors, or policy messages.
Stop when the upload and ordinary administration work. More permissive settings are not a safer confirmation and can widen the attack surface.
Roll back cleanly if administration changes
If a change causes a dashboard error, broken plugin behavior, or loss of file access, restore the owner, group, and modes you recorded before editing. If you cannot reconnect, use the host’s recovery console or support channel and provide the exact path and timestamp. Do not attempt a second broad recursive change while troubleshooting the first one; that destroys the evidence needed to identify the original cause.
Why 777 is not a fix
777 grants read, write, and execute access to the owner, group, and everyone else. It can make an upload succeed while allowing any process or compromised account with access to modify or execute files in that directory. The WordPress Developer Handbook warns: “The worst that can happen as a result of using 777 permissions on a folder or even a file, is that if a malicious cracker or entity is able to upload a devious file or modify a current file to execute code, they will have complete control over your blog, including having your database information and password.”

The same guidance says core files should typically be writable only by your user account, or by the httpd account when the hosting setup requires it. That is why the narrow uploads-path correction is preferable to making the entire site writable.
Filesystem denial versus WordPress authorization
Changing Unix permissions cannot grant a WordPress user a missing capability. If an administrator can upload successfully but receives an “insufficient permissions” or authorization message for a dashboard action, investigate the signed-in account, its role, and the capability required by that action. Conversely, a filesystem error can affect uploads even when the account is a valid WordPress administrator. Test one media upload and one ordinary dashboard page so these two layers are not conflated.
When to contact the host
Escalate when you cannot identify the PHP execution user, ownership cannot be changed, an ACL or mandatory policy denies access, the path is mounted read-only, or the provider uses immutable or isolated directories. Include:
- the exact WordPress error text;
- the configured uploads path and failing year/month directory;
- the recorded owner, group, and modes before any change;
- the time of a failed upload and relevant log entries;
- whether Media Library loading and normal
wp-adminnavigation still work.
Ask specifically which account runs PHP, which account should own the uploads directory, whether ACL or SELinux/AppArmor rules apply, and whether a container or quota is involved. Those answers identify the permission layer that WordPress itself cannot change.
