If WordPress displays , [contact-form], or another shortcode with its brackets instead of rendering the feature, WordPress has not found and executed a registered handler in that content path. The usual causes are an inactive or removed provider plugin, a mistyped tag, escaped double brackets, the wrong editor block, or a widget, template, excerpt, or custom field that does not run shortcode processing.

Work through the checks below in order. Start with the exact tag and the plugin or theme that owns it, then verify the editor surface and finally inspect the code that outputs the value. This separates a missing registration from a display-context problem without changing production code blindly.

A shortcode is a compact marker that WordPress replaces with generated output. A plugin or theme registers a tag such as gallery and associates it with a callback function. When a parser encounters , it separates the tag, attributes, and enclosed content, calls that handler, and inserts the handler’s returned string in the original position.
The Shortcode API describes this as part of the normal the_content pipeline: registered tags are parsed and passed to their corresponding handlers. If no matching registration exists, there is nothing to call, so WordPress treats the complete sequence—including attributes and enclosed content—as ordinary text and preserves the brackets in the HTML.

That distinction explains why the same shortcode can work in one location and appear literally in another. Registration may be present, while the second output path never invokes a shortcode parser.
Identify the failure before changing anything

Fix the shortcode in the safest order
1. Copy the exact shortcode from its provider
Shortcode names are registration keys, not informal labels. Copy the complete example from the plugin’s documentation or the administrator screen that generated it. Check every character:

- Use the exact tag name and capitalization expected by the provider.
- Remove accidental spaces inside the brackets or around an equals sign.
- Use only documented attributes and quote attribute values as shown.
- Match opening and closing syntax for enclosing shortcodes, for example
[tabs][tab]Text[/tab][/tabs]when the provider requires it. - Do not replace a straight quote with a typographic quote copied from a formatted document.
A spelling change creates a different, unregistered tag. The parser cannot infer what you meant, so it leaves the altered text untouched.
2. Confirm that the provider is installed and active
- In the WordPress dashboard, open Plugins > Installed Plugins.
- Find the plugin that supplied the shortcode and confirm that it is active, not merely installed.
- If it was deactivated, activate it and reload the page in a private browser window.
- If it was deleted or replaced, reinstall the same provider or migrate the content to the replacement plugin’s documented syntax.
- If the shortcode came from a theme, verify that the active theme or child theme still contains the registration code.
Deactivating a provider does not convert old content into a working alternative. Existing posts retain the characters they stored, but there is no callback to replace them until the original registration returns. A theme-supplied shortcode similarly disappears when you switch to a theme that does not register it.
3. Remove accidental escaping
WordPress supports double brackets as an explicit escape. [gallery] is intended to display the literal text , which is useful in a tutorial or code sample. If you want execution, use a single pair: .

Inspect the saved content in the editor, not just the visual preview. Some copied examples add an extra bracket at each end, and a code-oriented block may have been chosen specifically to preserve the syntax. Delete the extra brackets, save, and view the page while logged out to avoid an editor-only preview.
4. Put the tag in a block that executes shortcodes
In the block editor, insert the core Shortcode block. Open the block inserter, choose the Widgets category, and select Shortcode; you can also type /shortcode in a new paragraph and press Enter. Paste the single-bracket tag into that block and update the page.
A Code or Preformatted block is designed to show source text. Those blocks can correctly preserve brackets without ever calling the Shortcode API. A regular paragraph often goes through the post-content pipeline, but the dedicated Shortcode block makes your intent explicit and is easier to troubleshoot.
5. Check the widget and block-theme context
Do not assume that every place accepting text applies the same filters as post content. In a classic theme, place a shortcode in a widget type that documents shortcode support, or use a block in the widget area that explicitly processes shortcodes. A plain text field may print the characters without parsing them.
Block themes change the administration path: the old Appearance > Widgets screen is replaced by the Site Editor, where widget-like content lives in patterns, template parts, and other site-editing areas. Edit the relevant template part and confirm that the block you inserted is intended to execute shortcodes. A shortcode pasted into a navigation label, a site title, or a block attribute that only accepts literal text will remain text by design.

6. Inspect excerpts, menus, templates, and custom fields
Shortcodes in the main post body normally benefit from WordPress’s content filters. Other values are often just data. A custom field is metadata; WordPress documentation places responsibility for front-end display on the template tag or theme code that reads that metadata.
If a template intentionally supports shortcode values, the developer must pass the value through a shortcode parser before escaping or outputting it. A typical implementation is:

?>The do_shortcode() function parses known shortcodes in the supplied string. Newer code can use the modern shortcode-application path where appropriate. Do not apply this blindly to every field: fields containing untrusted or user-editable text need a deliberate sanitization and escaping policy, and fields meant to be plain text should stay plain text.
The same question applies to excerpts, menu descriptions, archive labels, and custom template variables: does the code that prints the value call a shortcode-processing function, or does it simply escape and echo the stored characters? If it only echoes, literal brackets are expected until the developer changes that output path.

?>Three details matter:
- The tag must match. The first argument to
add_shortcode()is the exact key users must place between brackets. - Return the replacement. A shortcode callback is a filter. It should return the HTML string; echoing output can send it to the wrong location or produce it before surrounding content.
- Sanitize and escape. Normalize attributes, validate values, escape URLs with
esc_url(), and escape visible text withesc_html(). Do not concatenate untrusted input into HTML.
Keep registration in a maintained plugin when the shortcode represents site content that should survive a theme change. Registration in a theme is portable only as long as that theme or child theme remains active.
8. Rule out conflicts and stale caches
Two components can register the same tag. The later registration can overwrite the earlier callback, changing or breaking output without changing your post. A practical isolation test is:
- Create or use a staging copy rather than experimenting on the live site.
- Temporarily activate only the provider plugin and a default WordPress theme.
- Test the shortcode in a normal post and in the original failing location.
- If it works, reactivate other plugins and the original theme one at a time until the failure returns.
- Inspect the conflicting component for a duplicate
add_shortcode()call, altered filters, or a custom output function.
After correcting registration or template code, clear the page cache, object cache, and any content-delivery cache used by the site, then test in a private window. Caches can preserve the old literal HTML even after the shortcode is fixed. There is no universal cache-clearing sequence; use the controls provided by your host and caching layers.
Understand the differences between common content locations

Common mistakes that look like shortcode bugs
The plugin is active, but the feature was removed
Updates can deprecate a tag, rename it, or move it behind a premium module. Check the provider’s current documentation and changelog rather than assuming that every historical tag still exists. If the old tag is no longer registered, replace it with the supported block or shortcode and update old content consistently.
The shortcode is inside a code example
Documentation, support tickets, and tutorials commonly use double brackets or a code block so readers can see syntax. That is correct display behavior, not a rendering failure. Use a single pair only in content where the feature should run.

The output is empty rather than showing brackets
An empty area usually means a handler did run but returned an empty string, encountered a conditional that hid its output, or generated markup that is hidden by CSS. Check the callback’s return value and browser developer tools separately from the registration test. A literal tag points to parsing or registration; an empty result points to the handler or its dependencies.
Attributes appear as text inside the result
Copy the provider’s attribute syntax and inspect quoting. A callback receives parsed attributes only when the tag is written in syntax the Shortcode API recognizes. Unsupported attributes may be ignored by the provider, while malformed quotes can prevent the intended value from reaching the callback.

The editor preview differs from the public page
Preview and front-end requests can use different templates, cache layers, or user permissions. View the published URL in a logged-out window, purge relevant caches, and test the same URL without editor overlays before concluding that parsing is inconsistent.
How to make a shortcode implementation maintainable
- Document the exact tag, supported attributes, defaults, and whether enclosing content is accepted.
- Keep registration in a maintained plugin when content must remain available across theme changes.
- Return output from callbacks and avoid side effects such as printing, redirects, or database writes during content parsing.
- Sanitize input at the boundary and escape output for its context: HTML text, URLs, attributes, or JavaScript each require different handling.
- Use unique tag names to reduce collisions with other plugins and themes.
- Test the shortcode in a post, the intended widget or template location, and a logged-out front-end request.
- Keep a staging copy for plugin, theme, and cache isolation tests.
A concise repair checklist
- Copy the provider’s exact shortcode, including its closing syntax.
- Confirm the provider plugin is installed and active, or confirm the active theme contains the registration.
- Replace accidental
[[tag]]escaping with[tag]when execution is intended. - Use Gutenberg’s Shortcode block via the block inserter or
/shortcode. - Replace Code or Preformatted blocks when they were meant only to display syntax.
- For widgets and block-theme templates, choose a block or widget that processes shortcodes.
- For custom fields and template variables, inspect the output code and add deliberate shortcode processing only where appropriate.
- For custom tags, verify
add_shortcode(), return behavior, sanitization, and escaping. - On staging, test with a default theme and only the provider active to expose conflicts.
- Clear applicable caches and retest the public page while logged out.
Bottom line
Visible brackets mean WordPress treated the sequence as text in that context. Restore the matching registration, remove intentional escaping, use an execution-capable editor block, or change the widget/template code to parse the value. Once the tag is registered and the output path invokes the Shortcode API, the callback’s returned content replaces the shortcode where it appears.
