A PS5 that freezes, closes a game, or powers off does not have one universal fix. Start by identifying whether one game crashes, every game crashes, or the entire console shuts down. Then update the game and system, isolate storage and accessories, check ventilation, and use Safe Mode before considering a reset. Do not start with a factory reset: it deletes user data and may not fix failing hardware.
Quick diagnosis: match the symptom to the first fix

A louder fan during demanding games is not, by itself, proof of overheating. Sony says increased fan activity can be normal. Actual power-offs, blocked ventilation, repeated heat-related failures, or abnormal electrical behavior deserve more attention.

Do these checks first
- Restart normally. Close the game if possible and restart from the power menu. If the console is completely frozen, hold the power button until it turns off, wait briefly, and restart. Repeated forced shutdowns are a sign to continue troubleshooting rather than simply repeating the cycle.
- Update the game. Highlight the game, press the Options button, and choose Check for Update where available.
- Update the PS5. Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Use the console’s update screen rather than relying on a fixed firmware number, since versions change. Sony’s current system-software guidance is available on its PS5 system software support page.
- Disconnect accessories temporarily. Remove USB extended storage, hubs, capture cards, external audio devices, charging docks, third-party cooling accessories, and recently installed hardware. Reconnect them one at a time after testing.
- Check storage. Open Settings > Storage. If the drive is nearly full, delete or move content carefully. Do not delete saved data as a routine crash fix.
If an update is stuck, open the control center, select Downloads/Uploads, highlight the update, choose View Error Info, and select Try Again.
Find out whether one game or every game is affected
This is the most useful early test. Try the affected game again, then test a different game and, if possible, an offline game. Note where each game is installed: the internal SSD, an added M.2 SSD, or USB extended storage.

- Only one game crashes: treat it as a game or installation problem first. Update it, check its online service if it is online-only, and reinstall it before considering any console reset.
- Several games crash but menus remain stable: prioritize PS5 system updates, storage isolation, ventilation, accessories, and Safe Mode.
- Games and menus crash: suspect broader system, storage, power, or hardware trouble.
- The console powers off: treat this as more serious than an application crash and prepare for repair if it repeats.
Record the exact error code, game, storage location, and what was happening when the failure occurred. Codes such as CE-108255-1 and CE-100005-6 commonly point toward an application or loading problem, but an error code alone does not prove that a particular component has failed.
Fix crashes affecting only one game
- Install the game’s update and restart the PS5.
- If it is installed on USB or M.2 storage, move it to internal storage and test again.
- Verify that the disc is clean and inserted if the game is disc-based.
- Check the publisher’s known-issues page if the problem began immediately after a game update.
- Confirm that saves are synchronized or backed up before deleting the game.
- Delete and reinstall the game from the Game Library or disc.
Deleting an application is not the same as deleting saved data, but you should still verify your local and cloud backups before changing anything. A reinstall can repair a damaged game installation; it cannot repair a console-wide hardware fault.
Check ventilation and possible overheating
Move the PS5 into an open location and let it cool completely before retesting. Sony recommends leaving at least 10 cm of free space around each side, avoiding carpet or rugs with long fibers, and avoiding narrow or enclosed spaces. Keep dust from building up around the vents. Before cleaning, disconnect the AC power cable and use a low-powered vacuum cleaner around accessible vents, following Sony’s ventilation and fan-noise guidance.

Do not assume that every freeze is caused by dust or thermal paste. A louder fan can be normal during a demanding game. However, if the PS5 repeatedly powers off during demanding workloads even after improving airflow, stop treating the problem as an ordinary game crash and arrange service.
Test internal, M.2, and USB storage
Storage becomes a stronger suspect when crashes affect games on the same drive, installations or updates repeatedly fail, or the problem began after adding an M.2 SSD.
- Check Settings > Storage and free space if necessary.
- Move one affected game to the internal SSD and retest.
- Disconnect USB extended storage temporarily.
- If an M.2 SSD was recently installed, shut down safely, remove it according to Sony’s procedure, and test the console without it.
- Do not repeatedly format a drive before considering saved-data and backup implications.
An M.2 drive should meet Sony’s published requirements, including a PCIe Gen4 NVMe interface, supported capacity, suitable sequential-read performance, correct physical dimensions, and effective heat dissipation. “PS5 compatible” branding is useful, but it does not replace checking the console’s requirements and installing the drive correctly. An officially licensed product such as the WD_BLACK SN850P for PS5 is an expansion option, not a general-purpose crash cure. Buy additional storage only when capacity or a suspect expansion drive is actually part of the diagnosis.

Use PS5 Safe Mode without jumping to a reset
Safe Mode requires a controller connected by USB. A wireless DualSense may not work until it is connected with a data-capable cable. If the controller is not detected, try another cable and USB port.

- Wait until the power indicator stops blinking.
- Press and hold the power button again.
- Release it after the second beep. The first beep sounds immediately; the second comes about seven seconds later.
- Connect the DualSense with a USB cable and press the PS button.
Use the least destructive option that fits the symptom:

A practical order for recurring freezes is Repair Console Storage, Clear System Software Cache, Rebuild Database, then Update System Software, unless an update problem clearly comes first. Sony does not present Rebuild Database as a guaranteed cure. It may help with database or system-content problems, but it will not repair defective power hardware, failing storage, or overheating.

If normal updating fails: use USB Safe Mode updating
Sony’s USB update method requires a PC or Mac, a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, and approximately 1.1 GB of free USB space for the update file. Create this exact structure:

└── PS5UPDATE.PUP- Download the official update file from Sony’s PS5 system software page.
- Use uppercase folder and file names:
PS5,UPDATE, andPS5UPDATE.PUP. - Turn off the console and insert the USB drive.
- Enter Safe Mode using the second-beep procedure.
- Select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK.
Use only official update data supplied by Sony Interactive Entertainment. If the console cannot update, repeatedly returns to Safe Mode, or fails during system-software installation, contact PlayStation Repairs rather than repeatedly forcing shutdowns.

Separate network problems from crashes
A network failure can interrupt an online match, download, license check, or cloud synchronization. It does not normally explain a frozen image in every game or a complete power loss.
For online-only symptoms, go to Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection, check the PlayStation service status, and test an offline game. Record any network error code. Sony’s downloaded-game troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking service status, testing the connection, updating system software, and using Safe Mode when relevant.
Reset and reinstall only as final software steps
Before any destructive action, synchronize saves with PlayStation Plus if available, back up important data where supported, and photograph error codes. Be especially cautious if you have no cloud backup.

- Reset PS5 deletes user data and restores the console to its original state.
- Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) deletes all user data and removes the PS5 system software.
Use a reset or system-software reinstallation only after updates, storage isolation, Safe Mode tools, and affected-game reinstallation have failed. A clean reinstall that does not solve crashes makes hardware, storage, power, or thermal trouble more likely; it is not a reason to keep repeating the same destructive process.
When to contact PlayStation Repairs
Use PlayStation Repairs when:
- the PS5 powers off rather than merely closing a game;
- multiple games crash after software and storage troubleshooting;
- the console crashes in menus or Safe Mode;
- system-storage or data-read errors keep returning;
- the console will not update or reinstall system software;
- the issue returns immediately after a clean reinstall; or
- there is a burning smell, liquid or physical damage, or abnormal electrical behavior.
For the United States and Canada, Sony’s PS5 limited warranty states a one-year period from the original purchase date for qualifying defects, subject to its terms and proof-of-purchase requirements. It does not mean every crash automatically qualifies for free service, so check the current warranty terms before assuming a repair will be covered.
