Install the missing unzip package from your Ubuntu or Debian repositories, then verify the executable:
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
sudo apt update
sudo apt install unzip
command -v unzip
unzip -v
After that, extract an archive with unzip archive.zip. The error means your shell cannot find the unzip executable; it does not mean the ZIP file itself is necessarily damaged.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat “unzip: command not found” means
unzip is a package-managed command, not a shell built-in. When a terminal prints unzip: command not found, the shell searched the executable directories in its PATH and did not find a program named unzip. On a standard Ubuntu or Debian installation, the normal remedy is to install the repository package with the same name.
This error is separate from messages such as “cannot find or open archive.zip” or “End-of-central-directory signature not found.” Those messages occur after the unzip program has started and concern the archive path or archive contents. Fix the missing command first; diagnose the ZIP file only if extraction still fails afterward.

The immediate fix
Interactive installation with apt
Run these commands in a terminal:
-
Refresh the local package index:
sudo apt update -
Install the package:
sudo apt install unzip -
Confirm that the shell can locate it:
command -v unzip -
Display the installed program’s version information:
unzip -v
sudo apt update downloads current package lists from the repositories configured on the machine. Running it before installation helps APT resolve the package using current metadata rather than an outdated local index. Ubuntu’s server documentation recommends APT for installing Debian packages, and the Debian APT guidance describes the same update-then-install sequence.

Using apt-get in scripts
For a script or an environment where the script-oriented interface is preferred, use:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install unzip
Debian recommends apt for interactive operations and apt-get for scripts. Both commands use the configured Debian-style repositories, request the package named unzip, and resolve its package dependencies through APT.
Ubuntu and Debian: same package, slightly different interface
The package name and basic installation sequence are the same on both distributions. The practical distinction is which APT interface fits the task and whether the machine’s repository definitions match its release.
| Item | Ubuntu | Debian |
|---|---|---|
| Package to install | unzip |
unzip |
| Interactive command | sudo apt updatesudo apt install unzip |
sudo apt updatesudo apt install unzip |
| Script-oriented interface | apt-get can be used |
Debian specifically recommends apt-get for scripts |
| Repository configuration | Definitions are read from /etc/apt/sources.list.d/; older releases commonly also use /etc/apt/sources.list |
APT uses the distribution’s configured repository definitions and package lists |
| Availability | Depends on enabled repositories for the installed Ubuntu release | The package search lists unzip in suites including bullseye, bookworm, trixie, forky and sid; availability still depends on your configured suite |
Do not copy a package version from an old tutorial. Package versions and suite contents change over time. Let the repositories configured for your release select the appropriate version.
Verify that the command is really installed
Locate the executable
command -v unzip prints the path of the command that your current shell would run. A successful result is a path such as /usr/bin/unzip. If it prints nothing and returns a failure status, the shell still cannot locate the executable.

Read version information
unzip -v asks the executable to report its version and build details. A normal response confirms that the command starts, not merely that a package transaction completed.
Test the actual archive operation
From the directory containing the downloaded file, run:
unzip archive.zip
Replace archive.zip with the real filename. If the name contains spaces, quote it:
unzip "game files.zip"
To extract into a separate destination directory, provide the directory with -d:
unzip archive.zip -d extracted-files
The Debian Project’s official manpage describes the utility this way: “unzip will list, test, or extract files from a ZIP archive, commonly found on MS-DOS systems.” That means the command can inspect an archive before extraction as well as unpack it.
Useful checks before extracting a downloaded ZIP
List the archive without unpacking it
Use -l to list the files stored in the archive:
unzip -l archive.zip
This is useful when a game mod, save backup or other download contains a top-level folder and you want to know where its files will land.
Test archive integrity
Use -t to test the archive without writing its files:
Rank #3
unzip -t archive.zip
If the test reports errors, the download may be incomplete or the file may not actually be a ZIP archive. Re-download it from the source that supplied it before changing system packages.
Check the current directory and filename
A working unzip command still cannot open a file that is in another directory or has a different name. Check the directory contents with:
ls
Then either change to the directory containing the archive or pass its path explicitly:
unzip /path/to/archive.zip
Keep the two problems separate: command not found is an executable-availability problem; “cannot find or open” is usually a path, filename or permissions problem.
When APT cannot install unzip
“Unable to locate package unzip”
First refresh the package index again:
sudo apt update
If APT still cannot locate the package, inspect the repository definitions under /etc/apt/sources.list.d/. On older Ubuntu releases, also inspect /etc/apt/sources.list. The configured entries must point to repositories appropriate for the installed distribution and release, and the standard repositories must be enabled.
After correcting the repository configuration, run:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install unzip
APT cannot install a package that is absent from its current package lists, so changing the command to a guessed version number is not a reliable fix. The package search lists unzip for Debian suites including bullseye, bookworm, trixie, forky and sid, but your machine receives only the suites and components configured in its APT sources.
Rank #4
Network or index-download errors
APT must reach the configured repositories to refresh package metadata. If apt update reports connection, DNS or download errors, confirm that the machine has network access and then retry the update. Resolve the update error before attempting the install; otherwise APT may continue using stale or incomplete package lists.

Installing a system package writes to protected system locations, which is why the commands use sudo. If sudo is unavailable or your account is not permitted to use it, an administrator must perform the installation. Do not download an unrelated executable into a random directory as a substitute for the repository package.
APT reports another package operation is active
Wait for an already-running package operation, such as an automatic update, to finish, then retry the update and installation. Do not delete APT lock files while a package process is running; doing so can leave the package database inconsistent.
If installation succeeds but the shell still says “command not found”
Run the verification commands in the same terminal where you plan to use the utility:
command -v unzip
unzip -v
Check the complete output from sudo apt install unzip. If APT says the package was installed but command -v remains empty, the shell’s executable search path or the package state needs investigation rather than the ZIP file itself. Open a new shell session and repeat the checks, then confirm that the standard system executable directories are present in PATH. Avoid placing a second, manually downloaded copy ahead of the distribution-managed executable, because that can make future troubleshooting ambiguous.

The archive is in a different location
Downloads are often saved outside the directory shown by a newly opened terminal. Use the archive’s full path or change into the download directory before running unzip.
The filename is not what you typed
Case, punctuation and spaces matter. List the directory with ls, copy the exact filename, and quote names containing spaces.

The file is not a ZIP archive
A web download can be an HTML error page, a different archive format or a truncated file despite having a .zip suffix. Run unzip -t. If it reports that the central directory or archive signature is missing, obtain a complete ZIP from the original download source rather than reinstalling unzip.
The destination contains existing files
Extraction can encounter files with the same names as entries in the archive. Read the prompts from unzip and choose deliberately whether to overwrite, skip or rename files. Extracting into a new directory is a safer way to inspect unfamiliar contents before merging them with an existing game installation.
