Feed The Beast specifies Java 21, at least 4 GB of memory and 6 GB recommended. Players must use the identical pack release as the server.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
What you need before installing
Direwolf20 Season 14 belongs to the Minecraft 1.21.1 ecosystem and uses NeoForge. The server and every client must use the same FTB release; matching only the broad “1.21” label is not sufficient when a newer hotfix or pack build is available.

| Requirement | What Feed The Beast establishes | What you must decide |
|---|---|---|
| Java | Java 21 | Use the Java runtime selected by the installer, or verify which Java executable the generated launcher calls if several are installed. |
| Memory | 4 GB minimum; 6 GB recommended | Reserve memory for the operating system and other services instead of assigning the entire machine to Minecraft. |
| CPU, storage and bandwidth | No universal figures are published | Choose hardware based on world size, simulation load, view distance, mod activity and the number of simultaneous players, then monitor the host. |
| Client version | Must match the server release exactly | Record the selected release ID and give that same version to every player. |
There is no official player-count guarantee. A machine that handles a few lightly active players can behave very differently when several players explore new terrain, run automation or keep distant chunks loaded. Plan to measure tick time, memory pressure and CPU use after the world is active rather than relying on a player number quoted for another pack or machine.
Choose and download the exact server release
Use FTB’s server-files page
- Open Feed The Beast’s Direwolf20 1.21 server-files page.
- Select the release your players will install. The page currently lists 1.21.0 as release ID 100464 and exposes newer release IDs as they are published.
- Choose the installer for the operating system that will run the server. Windows offers an executable; Linux offers a command-line download. The installer is tied to the pack and version selected.
CurseForge also lists server-file releases such as 1.17.0 and 1.18.3, but those are not interchangeable with the Season 14 1.21 stream. Do not combine files from an older listing with a 1.21 installation.

Create a dedicated directory
Make a folder used only by this server, such as C:MinecraftDirewolf20S14 on Windows or ~/servers/direwolf20-s14 on Linux. Put the installer in that folder and back up the directory before the first world is created.
Do not rename the installer. Feed The Beast says the filename identifies the pack and version, so changing it can prevent the installer from selecting the intended files. Keep the versioned name exactly as downloaded.

- Download the Windows installer for the chosen release into the dedicated server folder.
- Double-click the executable and follow its prompts. Allow it to download the pack files and its required runtime components.
- When the installer finishes, inspect the folder for the generated
run.batlauncher and the server files. - Start the server by double-clicking
run.bat, or run it from Command Prompt so the console remains visible.
The installer is designed to obtain the correct Java version automatically. If the console shows a different Java installation being used, check the generated script and your system’s Java associations before troubleshooting mod-loading errors.
Install on Linux or macOS
Linux command-line installation
From the directory where you want the server installed, download the versioned Linux installer. For release ID 100464, Feed The Beast provides this command:
curl -JLO "https://api.feed-the-beast.com/v1/modpacks/public/modpack/126/100464/server/linux"
chmod +x serverinstall_126_100464
./serverinstall_126_100464
If you select another release, replace the release ID in the URL and use the exact filename produced by the download. The versioned filename is intentional; preserve it rather than shortening it.

chmod +x, using the filename that was downloaded. - Launch the installer with
./and answer its prompts. - After installation, start the generated
run.shscript from the same server directory.
macOS
Use the Unix-style installer workflow supplied for the selected release: place it in the server directory, grant execute permission, run it from that directory, and then launch the generated run.sh. macOS may ask for permission to run a downloaded executable; approve it only when the file came from the official FTB server-files page.
Complete the first launch and EULA
Run the generated launcher once and read the console output. Depending on the release, the first start may create an eula.txt file and stop. Open that file, change eula=false to eula=true, save it, and start the launcher again. This EULA behavior is established practical guidance from FTB’s forum documentation; verify the files actually generated by your selected installer rather than creating arbitrary files or changing unrelated settings.
Keep the console open during the first successful start. It reveals whether NeoForge loads, whether Java is accepted, and whether the world reaches a ready state. Stop the server with the console’s normal stop command before moving or copying its files.
Set memory without starving the host
Apply the published baseline
Feed The Beast’s current requirements specify 4 GB as the minimum and 6 GB as the recommendation. Those numbers describe Java heap allocation, not the total memory needed by Windows, Linux, macOS, backups, monitoring or other applications. A host with only the minimum physical memory may still swap or become unstable if the operating system has no headroom.
Adjust the generated launcher conservatively
If run.bat or run.sh exposes -Xms and -Xmx, change those values in the launcher or its referenced configuration rather than inventing a second startup command. Start conservatively, leave room for the host, and increase the maximum only after observing actual behavior.

- Watch for long garbage-collection pauses, rising tick time or an “out of memory” message.
- Check total system memory, not just the Java process; swapping can cause lag even when the heap itself is below its limit.
- Change one setting at a time and restart cleanly so you can associate a result with the change.
FTB does not publish a universal heap size for every player count. The right value depends on the selected hardware, loaded chunks, automation and other simulation activity.
Let players connect on your network
Players on the same LAN
Players in the same home or office network can connect to the host machine’s private address. Find that address in the operating system’s network settings and give it to the player along with the Minecraft port if the client does not discover the server automatically.
Players outside your home
For Internet players, forward the default Minecraft port 25565 from the router to the computer running the server, and allow the server application through that computer’s firewall. The exact screens and commands differ by router model and operating system, so use the labels in your equipment’s documentation rather than copying a rule intended for a different device.
- Give the server computer a fixed private address, or create a DHCP reservation in the router.
- Create a TCP/UDP forwarding rule for port 25565 to that fixed address.
- Permit the Java/server process through the host firewall on the network profile you use.
- Start the server and have a friend outside your network test the public address.
A DHCP reservation matters because a reboot can otherwise assign a new private address and silently invalidate the forwarding rule. Share the public address only with intended players, and keep the operating system, router firmware and server files updated.

Verify a working server
- Every player has installed the same Direwolf20 Season 14 release ID as the server.
- The launch console reaches a ready state without repeated Java, NeoForge or missing-file errors.
- The world saves and the server shuts down cleanly when you issue the normal stop command.
- A LAN player can connect using the host’s private address.
- An external player can connect only after the forwarding and firewall rules are active.
- CPU, memory, disk space and tick behavior remain acceptable while players explore and use machines.
If a connection test fails, first determine whether the failure is local or external. A LAN failure points to the server process, client version, firewall or private address. If LAN works but an outside player cannot join, recheck the reserved address, forwarding destination, firewall rule and the public address being shared.

Back up and update safely
Back up before every change
Stop the server cleanly, then copy the world, configuration and the complete server directory to a separate disk or backup destination. Keep at least one backup that is not mounted as the live server’s data directory, so a failed update or disk problem cannot destroy both copies.
Use the official installer for version changes
When moving to another release, select that exact release in FTB’s server-files page and use its installer. FTB explains that the installer can retrieve updated or hot-fixed files without requiring a replacement archive, which is safer than assembling individual jars manually.
- Record the current release ID and make a verified backup.
- Tell players which release they must install and prevent anyone from joining with an older or newer client.
- Install the new server files in a fresh directory, or follow the installer’s documented update path.
- Copy only the data you intentionally need, such as the backed-up world, after confirming compatibility.
- Start the new server, inspect the console and test with one player before reopening access to everyone.
Never copy a newer client’s mods directory into an older server. Mod versions, loader versions and configuration files must come from the same release family.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The installer will not run
- Confirm that you downloaded the installer for the host operating system.
- Check that the filename was not changed and that the file is in the directory where you intend to install the server.
- On Linux or macOS, grant execute permission and run it from a terminal so permission or dependency errors remain visible.
Java errors appear at startup
Verify that the generated launcher is being used and inspect its Java path. The pack requirement is Java 21, while the installer is expected to download the correct runtime. Remove ambiguity from older system-wide Java entries only after preserving a copy of the generated script.
The server stops immediately
Look for an EULA message, a missing file, an invalid Java version or a mod-loading exception in the console. If eula.txt was created, edit only its acceptance value, save it and restart. Do not repeatedly delete the world to hide a startup error; resolve the reported cause first.

Players receive a version or mod mismatch
Compare the server’s release ID with the client’s installed profile. Reinstall the exact client release rather than copying random mods between instances. A one-number difference in a pack update can include changed mods or configuration.
Outside players cannot connect
Confirm that the server works from the LAN first. Then verify the host’s current private address, the router’s forwarding destination, the firewall permission and the public address. If the router is behind another router or carrier-grade NAT, a single port-forward rule may not be sufficient; consult the network provider or equipment documentation.
The world lags after players join
Watch tick time, CPU utilization, Java heap use, garbage-collection pauses and disk activity while reproducing the lag. Lower view or simulation distance if appropriate, stop unnecessary services, and increase memory only when the host has unused physical RAM. Because FTB publishes no fixed capacity figure, use these measurements to decide whether the machine is adequate.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Running the server at home gives you direct control over files, backups, firewall rules and operating costs. It also makes you responsible for uptime, updates, Java troubleshooting, attack surface and power or network outages.
| Consideration | Self-hosting | Managed service |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Uses your existing computer, electricity and Internet connection; there is no separate hosting bill, but hardware and outage costs remain yours. | Recurring rental cost; current price and plan limits must be checked with the provider. |
| Files and mods | Full access to the server directory, scripts, backups and firewall. | Access depends on the provider’s panel and plan, though a compatible plan should meet the pack’s published memory requirement. |
| Backups and updates | You schedule, verify and restore them yourself. | The provider may offer tools or support, but confirm what is included rather than assuming backups are automatic. |
| Uptime and support | Depends on your power, router, ISP and maintenance. | Datacenter uptime and support are the provider’s responsibility within its service terms. |
| Network setup | Requires a fixed local address, port forwarding and firewall configuration for remote players. | Usually avoids home-router configuration because the server runs in the provider’s network. |
Feed The Beast’s official modpack page identifies BisectHosting as a partner and provides an order link. Treat that as a managed-hosting option for readers who want a continuously available server without maintaining home infrastructure; verify current geography, pricing, plan limits and support terms before ordering.
