Dong Nguyen, creator of the original Flappy Bird, said on September 15, 2024, that he had no connection to the relaunch and had not sold anything. The Flappy Bird Foundation called its project the game’s “official” return, but that branding does not mean Nguyen approved or participated in it.
Did the original creator approve the new Flappy Bird?
No. In a post reproduced by GameSpot on September 16, 2024, Nguyen wrote: “No, I have no related with their game. I did not sell anything. I also don’t support crypto.” His statement directly denies a relationship with the relaunch and says he did not sell anything.
The Foundation’s use of “official” is a separate claim: it promoted its project as the official return and tied that framing to trademark rights. A claim about a trademark does not establish the original creator’s involvement or endorsement.
What does “official” mean in this dispute?
The Flappy Bird Foundation announced a comeback in September 2024. Contemporary reporting said it had acquired the Flappy Bird trademark from Gametech Holdings. That reported trademark transaction is not evidence that Nguyen joined or endorsed the project.
