Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn stands out from more traditional Soulslikes by combining familiar melee combat and punishing encounters with gunpowder, magic and fast, vertical movement. That makes it a Soulslike-adjacent action RPG rather than a strict FromSoftware-style clone—and a potentially appealing pick for players who want the genre’s flavor with a livelier rhythm.
What kind of game is Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn?
Developed by A44 Games and published by Kepler Interactive, Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn follows Nor Vanek, an elite Coalition sapper, and Enki, a mysterious magical companion. Its world is under attack by gods and the dead. The official pitch describes a mix of melee, gunpowder and magic, with rapid movement and aerial traversal alongside Enki’s support. The publisher also lists skill trees, equipment crafting and upgrades, side quests, collectibles and crafting materials.

“Flintlock retains elements of the souls-like genre and infuses it with rapid mobility resulting in dynamic and explosive combat,” A44 Games and Kepler Interactive say on the official game site.
That description points to the most useful shorthand: a Soulslike-adjacent action RPG, or “Souls-lite.” It borrows from the genre but leans into speed and mobility rather than trying to reproduce a traditional Souls formula.

What makes its combat different?
The core distinction is the combination of close-range fighting, firearms and magic. Enki adds companion abilities and traversal support, while rapid movement and aerial routes give encounters a more mobile feel than a combat system built around deliberate exchanges alone. The result, as presented by the game, is a broader set of ways to approach a fight—but the available evidence does not establish that it offers extensive character-build variety.
That limitation also appears in critical commentary. Metacritic’s excerpt of GameSpot’s July 17, 2024 PC review, rated 70, says: “Flintlock is not the kind of game where you’re going to see a ton of build variety.” That is one reviewer’s judgment, not a guarantee of how every player will experience the combat.
Is Flintlock hard, and is it a traditional Soulslike?
Critics have described Flintlock as more accessible, faster or less punishing than a classic Soulslike. Those are review characterizations, not a universal difficulty measurement. If you want the exact conventions and deliberate pace associated with a strict Soulslike, this may not be a close match. If you are open to an action RPG with Soulslike elements and a quicker combat rhythm, its approach may be a better fit.
The game’s reception reflects that divide. Metacritic’s pages, accessed October 8, 2026, showed a PC Metascore of 70 from 27 critics and a PS5 Metascore of 71 from 29 critics. On its PC page at that time, 26% of reviews were categorized as positive, 74% as mixed and none as negative. These are changing aggregator snapshots, not a permanent or definitive verdict. Critics praised aspects such as combat flexibility, movement, traversal, the setting, Nor and Enki’s companionship, and its accessibility as an entry point to the genre. Criticisms included uneven polish, limited enemy, weapon and boss variety, mixed combat precision, and a narrative or setting that did not always leave a lasting impression.

- Consider it if you want Soulslike flavor paired with faster movement, vertical traversal, firearms and magic.
- Look closely at reviews first if enemy and boss variety, precise combat or a memorable story are high priorities; critics raised concerns about those areas.
- It may not be your pick if you specifically want a strict, traditional Soulslike or a game built around extensive build variety.
There was no single critical consensus on whether all of the ideas come together. Metacritic’s excerpt of RPG Fan’s July 17, 2024 PS5 review, rated 86, offers a positive counterpoint: “Regardless of your thoughts on soulslite games, I think Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn succeeds at being an engaging action RPG.”

Is Flintlock worth playing?
It is most compelling as a variation on the Soulslike action RPG: melee, gunpowder and magic sit alongside quick movement and a companion, rather than a commitment to the genre’s most traditional form. Whether that trade-off works for you depends on what you value. The critical picture is mixed-to-average on the Metacritic pages accessed October 8, 2026, with praise for movement and combat flexibility balanced by concerns about variety, polish and narrative impact. Treat those scores and review judgments as context, then compare them with your own priorities.
