Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is a Souls-lite action-RPG built around a quick-changing mix of melee, gunpowder and magic, with a fox-like companion who helps in combat and traversal. Its faster pace and aerial movement distinguish it from more deliberate Soulslikes, though reviews disagree on how fluid its combat feels: GameSpot praised the speed and spectacle, while PC Gamer found some stiffness beneath the strongest encounters.
What kind of game is Flintlock?
Developed by A44 Games and published by Kepler Interactive, Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn follows Nor Vanek, a Coalition soldier fighting gods and the undead in the world of Kian. She is joined by Enki, a mysterious fox-like companion. The game describes itself as a “Souls-lite,” but its identity is not simply a slower, more punishing Souls-like: its pitch puts speed, mobility and combinations of weapons and magic at the center. The official game site presents that blend as the core of the adventure.
How do combat and traversal come together?
Nor’s toolkit combines close-range melee, gunpowder weapons and magic, while Enki contributes abilities that support both fighting and getting around. That combination gives combat a different rhythm from an action-RPG built chiefly around patient blocks and measured weapon swings: the appeal is in shifting between tools and keeping momentum, rather than relying on a single approach.
Traversal is part of the same design rather than a separate feature. GameSpot reviewer Richard Wakeling described the game as bringing Souls-like and traditional action-game sensibilities together through “fast-paced combat and high-flying traversal” in his July 16, 2024 review. That makes Flintlock a more natural fit for players seeking vertical movement and aerial attacks alongside familiar action-RPG encounters than for those looking specifically for grounded, slow-paced combat.

What do reviews say about the combat?
The main caveat is that speed and spectacle do not necessarily mean every exchange feels polished. GameSpot praised the fast-paced combat and high-flying traversal. PC Gamer’s July 17, 2024 review saw spectacle in the strongest fights, but said it could almost disguise a slightly stiff combat system. These are reviewers’ assessments, not a guarantee that every player will experience the same feel; together, they point to a game whose ambitious, kinetic mix may be more appealing than consistently smooth execution.
What is there to do beyond the main fights?
A44 describes a progression structure with separate skill trees for combat, magic and companion abilities. Side quests, collectibles, gear and crafting materials provide additional reasons to explore. That gives the game more progression and optional activity than a compact, straight-through action game, while leaving players choices about which parts of Nor and Enki’s capabilities to develop. The official release announcement outlines these systems.

Which platforms is Flintlock on?
The official listings establish availability on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC. The PlayStation listing specifies one player and offline play. Xbox lists 4K Ultra HD, up to 60 frames per second and Smart Delivery; these are listed platform features, not independent performance test results. Who should play it?
- Consider it if: you like Soulslike progression but want a faster action-RPG with aerial movement, companion abilities and a mix of melee, guns and magic.
- Approach with caution if: precise, consistently fluid combat is your main priority; PC Gamer’s review specifically notes stiffness, even while recognizing the spectacle of the strongest fights.
- Check before buying on PC: compare your hardware with Steam’s listed requirements, especially its 8 GB minimum and 16 GB recommended memory figures.
For players drawn to the idea of a Souls-lite that trades some deliberate pacing for mobility and layered combat, Flintlock’s premise is distinctive. Its key question is whether the combination and spectacle outweigh the combat stiffness noted by one reviewer.
