Grand Theft Auto VI’s Leonida is a fictional state inspired by Florida, not a one-to-one recreation of it. The clearest identifiable matches are in Vice City’s Miami and South Beach areas, where an expert quoted by Axios matched trailer landmarks to real Art Deco hotels, Ocean Drive sites and major causeways. The Leonida Keys and swampy Grassrivers strongly evoke the Florida Keys and the Everglades, while Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park currently support only broader or speculative comparisons.
That distinction matters: some locations are recognizable buildings, some are regional landscapes, and some are interpretations that Rockstar has not confirmed.

Leonida is GTA VI’s fictional version of Florida
Grand Theft Auto VI takes place in the fictional state of Leonida. GamesRadar+’s current guide identifies six named regions: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. Their names and environments make the Florida influence unmistakable, but the game is designed as a compressed, rearranged setting rather than a navigable copy of the state.
Vice City is the urban centerpiece and the region with the strongest specific real-world identifications. The other names describe island, wetland, rural, industrial and wilderness environments that resemble parts of Florida at a broad geographic level. A similar climate, road pattern or building type does not by itself prove that Rockstar modeled a location on one particular town.

Three kinds of “real place” inspiration
When someone asks which Florida places inspired GTA 6, the answer depends on what counts as a match. Trailer analysis and the region descriptions support three different confidence levels.
Identifiable landmark
A recognizable building, street frontage or piece of infrastructure can be compared with a named real location. The South Beach hotels identified by Miami preservation expert Daniel Ciraldo are the strongest examples. This is visual identification from released footage, not a statement that the entire surrounding block is reproduced exactly.
Broad geographic or ecological analogue
A fictional region can evoke a real landscape without copying a specific address. Leonida Keys suggests the Florida Keys as an island-chain idea, while Grassrivers is described as swampy and can reasonably be read as Everglades-like wetlands. These are useful interpretations, but they are not official one-to-one confirmations.

Fans may associate a rural-industrial district, a biker gang or a wilderness area with a particular Florida county or park. Unless a source identifies that match or Rockstar confirms it, it should remain a guess rather than a fact.
Vice City: the strongest Miami and South Beach evidence
The opening of the first GTA VI trailer provides the most concrete location comparisons available. Axios consulted Daniel Ciraldo, executive director of the Miami Design Preservation League, to identify architecture and streetscapes in the footage. His comments concern visible similarities in the trailer; they do not establish an official Rockstar map of Miami.
Lummus Park and the Art Deco hotel frontage
Ciraldo identified the Loews and Royal Palm hotels and 1500 Ocean Drive in the opening South Beach view around Lummus Park. That stretch of Ocean Drive is famous for its concentration of pastel Art Deco and postwar hotels, so the resemblance is more specific than simply saying that Vice City looks like Miami.

The comparison is still best understood as a set of recognizable façades and a familiar beachfront composition. The game can place a building on a shortened street or adjust its proportions while preserving the visual language that makes South Beach identifiable.
Ocean Drive landmarks farther south
Axios also reports Ciraldo’s identification of the Breakwater Hotel and Hotel Victor farther along Ocean Drive. In GTA VI, those counterparts are renamed the Boardwalk and Hotel Dixon. Renaming a landmark is consistent with the series’ fictionalized approach: the architecture can signal a real place while the in-game identity and surrounding events remain original.
Causeways, Brickell and Wynwood
The trailer’s wider Miami views include the Venetian and MacArthur causeways, plus views toward Brickell and Wynwood, according to Axios. These references help establish Vice City as a version of metropolitan Miami rather than an isolated resort strip. Causeways are especially important visual cues because they connect the mainland to barrier islands and frame the skyline from the water.
Ciraldo summarized the broad impression in Axios: “I must say the depictions are pretty exciting, it looks like they took the best of South Florida from the Everglades to South Beach and everything in between,”
Why the match is not an exact street map
The same expert cautioned that the architecture looks realistic even though “some buildings are out of order or on the wrong block!” That observation explains how to read the trailer. A hotel may be clearly based on a Miami landmark while appearing beside a different neighbor, on a shifted block or within a redesigned shoreline. The landmark resemblance can be strong without the geography being literal.

| Leonida region | Florida comparison | Evidence type | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vice City | Miami, especially South Beach, Ocean Drive, Brickell and Wynwood | Named landmarks and infrastructure identified in trailer analysis | Strongest specific evidence |
| Leonida Keys | The Florida Keys and their island-chain geography | Obvious name and setting analogy; no detailed developer confirmation | Plausible broad analogue |

| Port Gellhorn | No particular Florida town established | Cheap motels and strip clubs in the regional description | Unconfirmed location |

| Mount Kalaga National Park | No exact Florida park established | Wilderness-filled national-park region | Unconfirmed location |
What each region suggests—and what it does not prove
Leonida Keys: an island-chain reading
The name Leonida Keys is the clearest geographic hint outside Vice City. The real Florida Keys form a long chain of islands south of the peninsula, with bridges, coastal settlements and water defining movement between communities. A fictional region carrying that name naturally evokes the same idea.

That does not identify a specific key, resort or village as the model. No detailed developer statement in the available coverage confirms that every island, road or building corresponds to a particular Florida Keys location.
Grassrivers: wetlands rather than a confirmed park boundary
GamesRadar+ describes Grassrivers as swampy, and Axios places the trailer’s wider South Florida imagery in a panorama that includes the Everglades. Taken together, those details support an Everglades-like interpretation: broad wetlands, slow water, dense vegetation and a landscape that contrasts sharply with the dense coastal city.
The comparison should remain ecological and regional. “Grassrivers is based on the Everglades” is stronger than the evidence allows if it implies a surveyed boundary or a copied trail system. “Grassrivers evokes South Florida’s wetlands” accurately describes what the setting communicates.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Port Gellhorn: atmosphere without a named counterpart
Port Gellhorn is described through cheap motels and strip clubs, details that suggest a worn tourist corridor or roadside entertainment strip. Florida has many places with parts of that visual vocabulary, but the cited material does not name a particular Panhandle town, Gulf Coast city or real motel district as the source.
Its most defensible inspiration claim is therefore atmospheric. The region can represent a less polished side of Florida tourism without being assigned to one real municipality.
Ambrosia: rural and industrial Florida in fictional form
Ambrosia is characterized as rural and industrial and is associated with a biker gang. Those elements point toward working landscapes, warehouses, highways and small communities rather than Miami’s high-rise coast. They do not establish a specific county, factory town or biker stronghold as the model.
Because the series routinely combines social types and environments for storytelling, the gang affiliation is a cultural and narrative signal, not a geographic proof. Treat claims about a precise real-world counterpart as speculation.
Mount Kalaga National Park: wilderness with no confirmed park match
The northern Mount Kalaga National Park region is described as wilderness-filled. That gives Leonida a less urban, more remote setting, but the available reporting does not confirm an exact Florida national park or protected area behind the name.
Florida’s real wilderness is generally associated with wetlands, pine flatwoods, forests and protected preserves rather than dramatic mountain terrain. Without more official material, it is safer to discuss Mount Kalaga as a fictional wilderness region than to force a specific park comparison.

Rockstar’s fictional states are built for exploration, pacing and satire. Compressing Miami’s coastline, inland wetlands, islands and rural roads into one playable world lets a player reach contrasting environments quickly. The result can preserve the identity of a place while changing distances, street order and neighborhood boundaries.
This is why a real hotel can be recognizable even when it is not located on the same block as its real counterpart. The game’s geography serves a coherent fictional world first. A trailer landmark match should therefore be treated as evidence of visual inspiration, not as a promise that a real-world walking route will work in Leonida.

What has not been confirmed
- There is no captured Rockstar statement providing a detailed, region-by-region Florida inspiration map.
- No official source in the available coverage confirms a one-to-one mapping for the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia or Mount Kalaga National Park.
- The trailer analysis does not prove that every Vice City building, street or neighborhood is copied from Miami.
- There is no published count of how many GTA VI locations came from real Florida landmarks.
GamesRadar+ confirms PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S as platforms and reports physical preorder availability, but those product details do not add evidence about the locations’ real-world models.
A practical way to judge future location claims
As more footage appears, classify each alleged Florida reference before accepting it as fact:
- Look for a named, distinctive feature. A hotel façade, causeway or street sign offers stronger evidence than a generic palm-lined road.
- Check who made the identification. An expert-assisted comparison, such as Ciraldo’s Miami landmark work for Axios, is different from an unlabeled fan theory.
- Separate setting from address. A swamp can evoke the Everglades without reproducing a specific preserve; an island chain can evoke the Keys without naming a particular island.
- Allow for fictional rearrangement. Even a confirmed visual source may appear on a different block or beside invented neighbors.
- Use confidence language precisely. Say “identified as,” “evokes” or “plausibly resembles” when the evidence supports those terms; reserve “confirmed” for an explicit official statement.
On the evidence currently available, Miami and South Beach provide GTA VI’s most securely identifiable Florida inspirations. The rest of Leonida gains its Florida character through landscape, architecture and atmosphere, but its regional map remains an interpretation rather than an officially published blueprint.
