The safest way to improve a Steam Machine game is to measure a repeatable scene, update SteamOS, and change one game setting at a time. Keep 1080p and the highest image-quality settings the game can sustain, then reduce only the options that are causing unstable frame delivery; use a lower resolution only after those changes are insufficient.
Steam Machine uses 1080p as its system-default game resolution and for Steam Machine Verified testing, but Steam notes that each game’s defaults and each display can produce different results. There is no universal graphics preset that preserves the same balance in every title.

What Steam Machine’s 1080p default means
Steam Machine starts games at 1080p. Steam describes 1080p as the system default shown as Default in the Display resolution menu, chosen to provide a good out-of-the-box experience and used for Steam Machine Verified testing. That makes it a sensible baseline, not a promise that every game will run best at that resolution on every display.
You can change resolution globally or for an individual game. A global change affects more titles, while a per-game change lets you keep 1080p for games that handle it and use a different setting only where performance requires it. Because Steam says results vary with the game and the display, judge a change by both frame-time consistency and the picture you actually see.

Use this order: measure, update, then tune
A controlled sequence prevents you from lowering several settings at once and losing track of what helped. It also avoids treating a display-calibration control as if it were a rendering-performance switch.
- Record a baseline. Pick a repeatable section such as the same save point, route, battle or camera movement. Open Steam’s in-game performance monitor and note the frame-rate behavior together with the CPU, GPU and memory indicators that are available on your system. Record whether the problem is a consistently low rate, intermittent hitching or a sudden drop in a particular scene.
- Install available system updates and restart. Steam’s software troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for updates and restarting when addressing instability. Test the same section again after the restart so that you are comparing like with like.
- Check compatibility context. Look at the game’s Steam compatibility information and its Deck Verified classification where one is shown. A Deck rating is not a Steam Machine-specific certification. Steam says the Deck guidance may apply to some SteamOS-compatible third-party AMD hardware, but owners of other hardware should use the manufacturer’s support channel when the device-specific behavior is unclear.
- Change the game’s own graphics options. First try the game’s lower graphics preset if you need a quick diagnostic. If that improves consistency, restore any settings you want to keep and adjust individual options one at a time. Steam supports lowering a preset or changing individual settings, but its documentation does not rank settings or guarantee a particular gain.
- Measure again in the same scene. Keep a change only when it improves the behavior you are trying to fix without an unacceptable loss of detail. If the average frame rate rises but the game still hitches, inspect the worst moments and consistency rather than accepting the higher average.
- Test resolution deliberately. If the game remains too demanding, compare 1080p with the lower resolutions offered by that title. Resolution can make the entire image softer, so test it after less visually disruptive in-game changes when those options are available.
- Calibrate the picture separately. Use Steam Machine’s display controls to correct how the image looks, not as an assumed way to increase frame rate. Re-test performance only when you change a rendering option in the game or its resolution.
Build a trustworthy baseline with the performance monitor
An average frame-rate number can hide the exact problem a player feels. A game that spends most of a test at a high rate but pauses briefly during traversal may feel worse than a game with a lower, steadier result. Steam’s performance monitor exposes frame-rate and hardware-load information so you can see those differences while playing.
Repeat the same workload
Use a section that can be repeated after every change. Keep the camera movement, route and combat actions as similar as possible. Menus and quiet interiors are poor baselines if the complaint occurs during outdoor traversal or a large fight. Note whether the issue appears immediately, only after extended play or only when a new area loads.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Read load indicators as clues, not a verdict
- GPU pressure: When the GPU indicator is the one approaching its limit during the slow section, start with the game’s rendering-quality options and then compare resolution if necessary.
- CPU pressure: When the CPU indicator is the limiting signal, lowering visual detail may have little effect. Look for the game’s own options that affect simulation or scene complexity, if it provides them, and verify the result in the same workload.
- Memory pressure: A memory warning or high memory use can accompany hitching even when the average frame rate looks acceptable. Treat that as a consistency problem and test whether a less demanding game configuration removes the pauses.
- Missing metrics: Steam notes that some monitor metrics are not available on every operating system. Do not infer a precise bottleneck from a metric your system does not report; use the frame-time behavior and the indicators that are present.
These signals identify where to investigate, not which setting must be lowered. Steam’s published guidance does not provide a universal setting-to-performance table or a guaranteed frame-rate target.

Choose the least costly change first
The following order is a practical decision method for protecting image quality. It is not a Valve-published ranking of individual settings; the game, display and hardware determine the outcome.
| Change | Where it applies | Image-quality trade-off | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lower the graphics preset | Inside the individual game | Several visual options change together, so detail may drop more than necessary | You need a quick test to confirm that graphics load is involved |
| Adjust one demanding option | Inside the individual game | Usually easier to limit the visible loss because other settings remain higher | The preset improves performance but removes more quality than you want |
| Lower game resolution | Inside the game; some titles also allow a global or per-game Steam setting | The whole image can become softer or less detailed | Game-level quality changes are not enough to reach stable performance |
| Change the global resolution | Steam Machine’s system display configuration | Can affect many games and the desktop, not just the problem title | You deliberately want a system-wide resolution change and have checked its effect on your display |
| Adjust HDR, SDR brightness, color temperature or RGB range | Steam Machine’s Display > Advanced controls; games may also have HDR calibration | Changes the appearance of brightness, contrast or color rather than rendering detail | The picture is washed out, too dark, too warm or otherwise incorrect; it is not a default performance fix |
How to lower quality without making the picture look bad
Start with a preset only as a diagnostic
A lower preset is useful because it quickly answers whether the game is simply asking for more rendering work than the current configuration can sustain. It is a blunt instrument: several settings can change at once, and you may sacrifice visible detail that was not responsible for the slowdown. Once you confirm that the preset helps, return to the higher preset and change individual options so you can keep the qualities you value.
Change one option, then compare
Use the game’s preview or a repeatable scene when it offers one. Make a single adjustment, apply it, and run the same baseline. Compare three things: the slowest or least consistent moments, the load indicators and the visible difference during normal play. If an option changes the picture substantially but does not improve the measured problem, restore it and test another option.
Do not assume a higher average is enough
Keep a setting only when it addresses the symptom. A higher average with the same traversal hitch is not a successful trade. Conversely, a modest average change that removes severe pauses can be a meaningful improvement. Steam’s monitor is valuable here because it lets you inspect behavior during the event rather than relying on a post-session impression.

When and how to test a lower resolution
Resolution is a broad change: it affects the sharpness of the complete frame and may be more noticeable than an individual quality option. Steam Machine’s 1080p default is therefore a useful control for comparison. Write down the current resolution, switch to the next lower option offered by the game, and repeat the same scene at the same display settings.
Keep the lower resolution only when its loss of clarity is acceptable and the frame delivery improves in the situations that matter. If the image becomes too soft, return to 1080p and continue with individual game settings, or use a per-game profile rather than changing the whole system. Do not claim a specific percentage gain from a resolution change: Steam’s official material does not publish such benchmarks, and the result is game-dependent.
Display controls: improve the picture, not the frame rate
Steam Machine’s Display > Advanced area includes HDR, SDR brightness, native color temperature and RGB output range. Individual games may also include HDR calibration. These controls determine how the signal is displayed. Steam’s guidance says the right adjustment depends on the Machine, the display and the game; it does not identify them as automatic performance improvements.

Color temperature
Native color temperature changes the tone of white and neutral colors. Choose the setting that matches your display and preference, then leave it out of performance comparisons; it does not substitute for reducing a game’s rendering load.
RGB output range
An incorrect RGB range can make blacks look gray or crush shadow detail. Correcting the range can make the existing image look substantially better, which may let you keep higher game-quality settings, but it does not reduce the work the game performs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.External-display problems are a separate branch
If the problem appears only on an external display, first establish whether it is a performance problem or a signal/configuration problem. Steam’s separate docking guidance for Deck describes cases where an in-game adjustment or a different cable/input is appropriate. That conditional advice should not be turned into a claim that a premium cable increases Steam Machine frame rates.
- Compare the same game and scene on the Machine’s own display, if available, and on the external display.
- Check the external display’s selected input and its supported resolution or HDR mode.
- Try the game’s display options when the issue is limited to that title.
- Change the cable or input only when the symptom indicates a connection or compatibility problem, such as loss of signal, incorrect mode or unstable output.
Once the signal is stable, return to the performance-monitor baseline before changing graphics settings. Otherwise, a display handshake problem can be mistaken for a GPU or CPU limit.

Troubleshoot by symptom
The frame rate is consistently low
- Update SteamOS and restart.
- Run the baseline with the monitor visible and identify whether GPU, CPU or memory pressure accompanies the low result.
- Test the game’s lower preset, then restore it and adjust individual options if the loss is too large.
- Compare a lower in-game resolution with 1080p.
- Keep the change that reaches acceptable consistency with the smallest visible compromise.
The average looks fine but the game stutters
- Repeat the same traversal or combat sequence and watch the worst moments, not just the average.
- Check whether the monitor shows a matching spike in CPU, GPU or memory pressure.
- Test one graphics option at a time and confirm whether the hitch itself changes.
- After updates or a restart, repeat the identical sequence before drawing a conclusion.
Lowering graphics does not help
Verify that the change was applied and that you tested the same workload. If GPU load was not the limiting signal, further lowering visual quality may not address a CPU- or memory-related problem. Check the game’s compatibility information and seek device-manufacturer support when the behavior is specific to non-Deck SteamOS hardware.
The image looks wrong after a setting change
Undo the last change, then separate game rendering options from Display > Advanced controls. Recheck HDR, SDR brightness, color temperature and RGB range, and use the game’s own HDR calibration where provided. These controls can correct appearance without changing the performance workload.
Keep changes scoped to the game that needs them
A per-game adjustment is usually easier to evaluate because it preserves your preferred configuration elsewhere. Record the game, resolution, preset and individual options you changed, along with the scene used for testing. If a later update changes the game’s defaults or behavior, you can reproduce the comparison instead of guessing which setting caused the difference.

Quick Recap
What Steam’s guidance does—and does not—establish
- Steam establishes 1080p as Steam Machine’s default game resolution and the resolution used for Steam Machine Verified testing.
- Steam recommends updates, a restart, checking compatibility information and lowering a preset or individual game settings when addressing software performance issues.
- The performance monitor provides frame-rate and hardware-load information that can expose inconsistent delivery, although metric availability varies by operating system.
- Steam does not publish a universal preset, a guaranteed target frame rate or tested percentage gains for particular settings in an unspecified game.
- Deck-specific compatibility and docking guidance should not be presented as a Steam Machine certification or as proof that a particular cable improves frame rate. Steam says some Deck advice may apply to SteamOS-compatible third-party AMD devices and directs other hardware owners to the manufacturer.
A repeatable checklist for each game
- Leave the system at 1080p and note the display mode.
- Choose one repeatable scene and record frame-rate behavior plus available CPU, GPU and memory indicators.
- Install updates and restart.
- Check the game’s Steam compatibility information, keeping Deck classifications separate from Steam Machine certification.
- Test the game’s lower preset once.
- Return to the preferred preset and change one individual option at a time.
- Repeat the same scene after every change.
- Compare a lower in-game resolution only if the game remains unstable.
- Calibrate HDR, brightness, color temperature and RGB range independently from performance tuning.
- Save the per-game configuration that fixes the actual symptom with the smallest visible quality loss.
