The arcade game has five stages; a lost life resets your shot power, so staying alive protects both your plane and its upgrades.
Know what can cost you a life
The arcade controls are an eight-way joystick, a Shot button, and a separate Bomb button. Get comfortable reaching both buttons before a busy wave arrives. Airborne enemy fire and collisions with airborne enemies destroy your plane and cost a life. By contrast, the official rules say contact with enemies on land or sea does not cost a life, so prioritize safe positioning around aircraft and their shots.
Keep firing as you move, but avoid sweeping across the screen without purpose. Watch where airborne threats enter and leave room to adjust your position. On the enhanced Steam edition, moving left or right can expand the field of vision beyond the screen and reveal hidden threats, according to the Steam listing.
Use formations and ground targets to build resources
- Red aircraft formations: Shooting down every aircraft in a red formation produces an S item, which raises shot power by one level. The game describes six power levels.
- Certain ground enemies: Destroying some ground targets can reveal a B item that adds one bomb. Not every ground enemy is stated to drop one.
- White aircraft formations: Shooting down every aircraft in a white formation can yield a 1UP when certain conditions are met. It is not guaranteed on every formation.
These rewards make it useful to notice formation colors and target groups rather than chasing whichever enemy is closest. But do not take a risky line through airborne fire just to collect a possible item.

Spend bombs to stay alive
Bombs destroy enemies, and the game gives you three bombs after you lose a life. That makes the bomb button a survival tool, not just a score-saving option. If an airborne threat or dense attack leaves you without a safe route, using a bomb is a reasonable tactic; the official rules do not establish one universally best moment to use it.
At a stage clear, each bomb left in stock awards 3,000 points, then your bomb inventory resets to three. That documented bonus can reward restraint, but surviving the stage is the more immediate concern when you are learning.

Protect your shot power across the five stages
TATSUJIN’s official Flying Shark/Sky Shark game page states that the game has five stages. Losing a life resets your power-ups, so a life is valuable not only for continuing the run but also for keeping your current shot upgrade. After a death, you begin with three bombs, giving you a fresh resource even though your power has reset.
Choose practice settings that fit your goal
Features depend on the edition. The original arcade rules describe the basic controls and mechanics; they do not imply that every home version includes modern practice aids. The enhanced PC edition listed on Steam advertises beginner and Very Easy modes, customizable practice, autofire assists, quick saves, rewind, and controller support.

| What you want to do | Steam edition option | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Learn movement and threat patterns with less pressure | Beginner or Very Easy difficulty; customizable practice | More forgiving conditions than an unassisted run |
| Repeat a difficult section or recover a learning attempt | Quick saves or rewind | Useful for practice, but distinct from a clean score attempt |
| Reduce repeated button presses | Autofire assists | An assist changes the play conditions |
| Play with a gamepad | Controller support | Optional; no particular controller model is established as best |
If your aim is to learn, use the aids that let you focus on movement and enemy timing. If your aim is an unassisted score run, choose settings that match that goal instead. These Steam-specific options should not be assumed to exist in arcade or other editions.

- Start on the easiest mode or in a practice setting if you are playing the Steam edition.
- Rehearse moving while firing, then deliberately test the separate bomb input so it is easy to use under pressure.
- Watch for airborne enemies and note where they enter. On Steam, try moving left and right to expose more of the field and reveal off-screen threats.
- Pay attention to red and white formations and to ground targets that may yield items; collect rewards only when you can do so without taking an unnecessary airborne risk.
- After a death, account for the power-up reset and your three bombs. Choose one new threat pattern to learn on the next attempt rather than changing every tactic at once.
This routine is practical guidance based on the documented mechanics and Steam practice options, not a claim of a tested optimal route.
