Flying Shark (1987) is the original; Fire Shark (1989) is its sequel. Both are vertically scrolling Toaplan shooters built around an eight-way joystick, Shot, and Bomb, but they differ in length and how you power up: Flying Shark has five stages and one shot family with six power levels, while Fire Shark has ten stages and three selectable weapon types.

Is Fire Shark a sequel to Flying Shark?

Yes. TATSUJIN lists Flying Shark (Japanese title: 飛翔鮫) as a 1987 release and Fire Shark (鮫!鮫!鮫!) as a 1989 release. The official Flying Shark title page and Fire Shark title page establish that release order; Fire Shark’s story also says the Flying Shark fighter is revived as Fire Shark.

What changes in the gameplay?

Feature Flying Shark Fire Shark
Arcade release 1987 1989
Stages Five Ten
Shot system One shot family; S items raise shot power through six levels. Three shot types—Wide, Beam, and Fire—with separate shot-power and speed items.
After losing a life Shot power resets; you return with three bombs. Power-ups reset; you return with Wide Shot and three bombs.
Distinctive feature Horizontal scrolling follows your plane as well as the vertical scroll. Three weapon families; fully powered Fire Shot expands to cover nearly all directions.

The controls and basic danger are shared: both games use an eight-way joystick plus Shot and Bomb. Enemy fire or a collision with an airborne enemy destroys the plane and costs a life. The official descriptions appear on the respective Flying Shark and Fire Shark pages.

Flying Shark: one weapon, plus room to reposition

Flying Shark builds progression around improving a single shot family. Its unusual distinction is that the playfield scrolls horizontally in response to the plane’s movement while continuing to scroll vertically. TATSUJIN describes the playable area as 4/3 the displayed area: moving sideways can shift enemies off-screen and limit the directions from which they can attack. That makes positioning part of its defensive toolkit, rather than just a way to line up shots.

Toaplan Arcade Garage: Flying Fire Shark NS
  • Includes Flying Shark (1987), Fire Shark (1989), and Wardner (1987)!
  • Super Easy or Arcade Challenge? New bonus modes for every skill level!
  • Enjoy the free DLC game Teki-Paki!

Fire Shark: choose a weapon and manage its power

Fire Shark makes weapon choice central. Collect a blue item for Wide Shot, green for Beam Shot, or red for Fire Shot; separate items increase shot power and speed. The Fire Shot’s spread becomes especially broad at full power, covering nearly all directions. Because the game resets power-ups after a lost life, a death can change both your weapon strength and your preferred approach.

Which game should you try first?

  • Try Flying Shark first if you want the shorter five-stage game, a straightforward power ladder, and the distinctive option to scroll sideways while navigating attacks.
  • Try Fire Shark first if you want a longer ten-stage run and the added decision of choosing among three weapons, then balancing shot power and speed.
  • Compare them back to back if the appeal is seeing how the sequel changes the formula: retain the familiar controls and high-stakes lives, but expand the run and weapon system.

Where can you play both games now?

Nintendo’s US listing for Toaplan Arcade Garage: Flying Fire Shark includes both arcade games. The listing gives an August 29, 2026 release date and describes Arcade Mode, Super Easy Mode, M2 gadgets with enemy, hidden-feature, and item information, plus Arcade Challenge, which divides stages into smaller practice sections and includes rewind. Availability and listing details can vary by region and may change.
