fmodstudio.dll Not Found: Fix Game Launch Errors on Windows

Length18 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

fmodstudio.dll errors usually appear when a game or application cannot load the FMOD audio runtime. The message may say “fmodstudio.dll was not found,” “The code execution cannot proceed,” or “The specified module could not be found.”

fmodstudio.dll was not found

The safest first fix is to verify or repair the game through its launcher. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website or copy one into C:\Windows\System32.

Which fix applies to you

Start with the situation that best matches what you see:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A game stopped launching after an update or interrupted install: verify the game files in Steam, Epic Games Store, or the launcher that installed it.
  • The file disappeared after an antivirus scan: inspect quarantine and then repair the game installation.
  • The game launches in the editor but not in a packaged build: check the final build folder, Unity plugin settings, or Unreal integration files.
  • You are developing a C++, C#, Unity, or Unreal application: install the matching FMOD package and place its runtime DLLs beside the actual executable or in the integration’s required plugin directory.
  • The error says “specified module could not be found” even though the file exists: a dependency of fmodstudio.dll may be missing.
  • The error mentions an incorrect format or BadImageFormatException: the application and DLL probably use incompatible architectures.
  • The error says the file is not designed to run on Windows: the DLL may be corrupted, incomplete, or from the wrong architecture or FMOD version.
  • The application crashes while naming fmodstudio.dll, but does not say it is missing: this may be an audio-device, driver, plugin, or game-code crash rather than a missing-file problem.

What is fmodstudio.dll?

fmodstudio.dll is the release Windows runtime for the FMOD Studio API. FMOD Engine is developed by Firelight Technologies and is used by games and applications to play FMOD Studio banks, adaptive music, sound effects, and other interactive audio.

It is not a Windows system file. It normally belongs in the game or application directory, not in System32 or SysWOW64.

Games can ship this file as part of their own installation. It can also arrive through:

  • FMOD Engine SDK projects
  • FMOD Studio API applications
  • FMOD for Unity
  • FMOD for Unreal
  • Commercial games built with FMOD
  • Standalone C++, C#, or other native applications using FMOD

FMOD applications commonly use both:

fmod.dll
fmodstudio.dll

fmod.dll is the FMOD Core API runtime. fmodstudio.dll provides the FMOD Studio API layer used by projects built around FMOD Studio. A Core-only application may need only fmod.dll, while an FMOD Studio project generally needs both matching libraries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FMOD also supplies fmodstudioL.dll, which is the logging or debug variant. If an application specifically requests fmodstudioL.dll, replacing it with the normal release DLL will not solve the underlying problem.

There is no single universal version or file size that is correct for every game. The right DLL depends on the application, FMOD integration, architecture, and associated sound banks.

Fix 1: Verify the game files in its launcher

This is the most likely solution for an ordinary player. Verification compares the installed files with the launcher’s expected files and downloads missing or damaged files from the legitimate source.

Steam

  1. Open Steam.
  2. Select Library.
  3. Right-click the affected game.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Open Installed Files.
  6. Select Verify integrity of game files.
  7. Wait for the process to finish.
  8. Restart Steam and launch the game again.

The result should indicate whether files were validated, replaced, or reacquired. Start the game from Steam after verification rather than launching an old shortcut that may point to a different executable.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you use mods, verification may remove modified files or restore official versions. Back up important mod configuration first, then reinstall compatible mods after the unmodified game launches.

Epic Games Store

  1. Open the Epic Games Launcher.
  2. Select Library.
  3. Find the game.
  4. Select the three-dot menu beside the game.
  5. Choose Manage.
  6. Select Verify.
  7. Wait for the check and download process to complete.

Launch the game from Epic after verification. If the error returns immediately, continue with the antivirus and dependency checks below.

Other launchers

Most PC game launchers provide a similar command named Verify, Repair, Scan and repair, or Validate files.

Look for the game’s menu in:

  1. The launcher library.
  2. The game’s three-dot or gear menu.
  3. A settings or installation section.
  4. An option referring to repair, verification, or file integrity.

If the launcher does not provide verification, uninstall and reinstall the game from its official launcher or publisher account. This restores the FMOD build that the game expects instead of introducing an unrelated DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to tell whether this worked

The fix worked if:

  • The game reaches its menu without the DLL message.
  • The launcher no longer reports missing files.
  • The repaired installation contains fmodstudio.dll in the game’s own directory or expected subdirectory.
  • The game’s audio initializes normally.

If verification completes but the same error appears, do not repeatedly verify without checking antivirus quarantine and the final executable directory.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application

Verification may not repair a damaged launcher, incomplete installation, or manually moved game. A clean repair or reinstall is the next step.

Before uninstalling, check whether the game stores saves locally. Cloud saves may protect progress, but not every title uses them. Back up save folders and configuration files when the game documents their location.

Repair from Windows Settings

Some Windows applications expose a repair option:

  1. Press Windows key + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select its three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Launch the application again.

The exact options vary by application. A repair usually preserves user data, while Reset can remove application settings and should be used only after backing them up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reinstall from the official source

If repair is unavailable or ineffective:

  1. Uninstall the game or application through its launcher or Windows Settings.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Reinstall it from the official game launcher, Microsoft Store, publisher account, or vendor installer.
  4. Allow the installation to finish without pausing it.
  5. Launch the application before adding mods or manually copying files.

If the game includes _CommonRedist, Redist, or a similar folder, inspect it for official installers bundled with the game. These may include Microsoft Visual C++ components or other dependencies required by the title. Run only installers belonging to the legitimate game installation.

Do not install the newest standalone FMOD DLL into an older game. The game may expect a particular FMOD build, matching fmod.dll, and compatible audio banks.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software can remove or quarantine a legitimate game DLL, particularly after an update changes the binary or after a new detection rule is applied.

For Microsoft Defender:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Windows Security.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent events.
  7. Expand an event that references the game or fmodstudio.dll.
  8. Compare the recorded path with the game’s real installation folder.

Restore the file only when all of these are true:

  • The file came from a legitimate game or application installation.
  • The full path belongs to the expected game folder.
  • You have not obtained it from a DLL download site.
  • The game or publisher can confirm the file is legitimate.

If Defender or another security product detects the file again, do not repeatedly restore it or disable protection permanently. Repair or reinstall the application from its official source, then report the suspected false positive to the game or software vendor.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you intentionally add an exclusion, exclude only the specific trusted game folder and understand that files placed there may receive less protection. Never exclude the entire drive, Windows directory, Downloads folder, or a broad user profile directory.

After quarantine recovery, verify the game again. The launcher may have to redownload the file and restore related FMOD components together.

Fix 4: Check the application directory

A runtime DLL is normally loaded from the application directory or from a documented plugin directory. It does not need to be globally registered.

For a normal installed game, check the folder containing the game’s main executable. For a developer build, the expected layout is similar to:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
YourProject\x64\Release\YourProgram.exe
YourProject\x64\Release\fmod.dll
YourProject\x64\Release\fmodstudio.dll

The exact folder may be named Win64, Binaries, Plugins, or something specific to the engine. The important point is that the DLL must be available to the executable that is actually being launched.

A linker setting that finds fmodstudio_vc.lib during compilation does not automatically copy fmodstudio.dll into the runtime output folder. Import libraries help build the application; the DLL is still required when the program starts.

Do not solve this by copying the file into:

C:\Windows\System32
C:\Windows\SysWOW64

Global copies can cause unrelated programs to load the wrong FMOD build. They also make version mismatches harder to diagnose. Restore the application through its official installer instead.

Fix 5: Match x86, x64, and ARM64 correctly

FMOD provides separate Windows builds for x86, x64, and ARM64. The operating system’s bitness does not automatically tell you which build a particular application needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The application, fmodstudio.dll, fmod.dll, import library, plugins, and dependent native libraries must use compatible architectures.

Typical FMOD SDK directories look like:

api\studio\lib\x86\
api\studio\lib\x64\
api\studio\lib\arm64\

Use the architecture of the application being launched:

  • A 32-bit game needs the x86 FMOD runtime.
  • A 64-bit game needs the x64 runtime.
  • An ARM64 application needs the ARM64 runtime.
  • A 64-bit Windows installation can still run a 32-bit game.

A mismatch often produces an error such as:

BadImageFormatException:
An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format.

It can also produce a message saying the DLL is not designed to run on Windows.

For a .NET application, check whether the project targets x86, x64, ARM64, or Any CPU. An Any CPU build can still load a native FMOD library incorrectly depending on the process architecture and hosting settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a C or C++ application, make sure the Visual Studio configuration matches the native libraries:

  1. Open the project in Visual Studio.
  2. Select Build.
  3. Select Configuration Manager.
  4. Check the active solution platform.
  5. Confirm that the FMOD library directory uses the corresponding architecture.
  6. Build the application.
  7. Place matching fmod.dll and fmodstudio.dll beside the resulting executable.

Do not decide based on file size. Different FMOD releases and architectures naturally have different sizes.

Fix 6: Repair Unity FMOD packaging

Unity projects can work in the Editor while the standalone game is missing its native FMOD files. The Editor and the packaged player do not necessarily use the same output directory.

For a Windows x64 Unity build, inspect the final build folder for a path similar to:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
<ProjectName>_Data\Plugins\x86_64\fmodstudio.dll

Use this sequence:

  1. Open the Unity project.
  2. Confirm that the FMOD for Unity package’s major version matches the FMOD Studio project.
  3. Open the FMOD menu.
  4. Select Reorganize Plugin Files.
  5. Wait for the operation to complete.
  6. Inspect the FMOD plugin folders for the Windows architecture required by the build.
  7. Select the native FMOD DLL in the Project window.
  8. Open the Plugin Inspector.
  9. Enable the intended standalone Windows platform and architecture.
  10. Rebuild the player into a new output folder.
  11. Test the newly built executable.

Check the final build rather than only the Unity project tree. A DLL can exist somewhere in Assets and still be excluded from the player because its platform or architecture import settings are disabled.

If the integration appears damaged:

  1. Commit the project or create a backup.
  2. Close Unity.
  3. Remove the project’s Assets\Plugins\FMOD folder.
  4. Reopen Unity.
  5. Reimport the matching FMOD for Unity package.
  6. Run FMOD → Reorganize Plugin Files.
  7. Build again.

Use this procedure only when the integration is genuinely damaged and you have a backup. Reimporting can affect project plugin files and configuration.

Fix 7: Repair Unreal FMOD integration

Unreal projects can retain stale plugin binaries in Binaries or Intermediate folders after changing the FMOD integration.

If Unreal packaging fails:

  1. Close Unreal Editor.
  2. Back up or commit the project.
  3. Confirm that the FMOD Studio integration matches the project’s FMOD Studio and Engine versions.
  4. Replace the old FMODStudio integration with the complete matching integration folder.
  5. Remove stale project Binaries and Intermediate data when the integration instructions require it.
  6. Reopen the project.
  7. Allow Unreal to regenerate project data.
  8. Package the game again.
  9. Inspect the packaged output for the expected FMOD binaries.

Do not replace only fmodstudio.dll. Unreal plugins include additional files, module definitions, libraries, and integration code that must remain compatible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Install the matching Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable

Sometimes fmodstudio.dll is present but Windows cannot load one of its dependencies. This is why the message:

The specified module could not be found

does not always mean that fmodstudio.dll itself is absent.

A missing dependency may include a Visual C++ runtime such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll. Install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable only when:

  • The error names a Visual C++ runtime.
  • The game installer documents it as required.
  • Dependency analysis identifies it as missing.
  • Several native applications show related runtime errors.

Use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. Select the architecture that matches the application, not simply the operating system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The official Microsoft installers include:

After installation:

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Verify or repair the game again.
  3. Launch it from the official launcher.

The Visual C++ package is not a universal fix. It will not restore a deleted fmodstudio.dll, correct a wrong FMOD version, or repair an incorrectly packaged Unity build.

Fix 9: Install Media Feature Pack on Windows N

Windows N editions omit certain media technologies. FMOD support cases have identified missing Media Foundation components such as MFPlat.dll and mfreadwrite.dll as possible causes of FMOD loading failures on these editions.

To install the Media Feature Pack:

  1. Press Windows key + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Optional features.
  4. Select View features.
  5. Search for Media Feature Pack.
  6. Select it.
  7. Select Next.
  8. Select Add.
  9. Restart Windows.

Microsoft provides the edition-specific instructions in its guide to the Media Feature Pack for Windows N.

After restarting, verify the game files and try again. Installing Media Feature Pack is not necessary for a standard non-N edition unless the application documents another media dependency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 10: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

System File Checker and Deployment Image Servicing and Management repair Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party game DLL, so they are not the first step for an isolated fmodstudio.dll problem.

Use them when:

  • Several unrelated applications fail.
  • Windows features are also malfunctioning.
  • The error names a Windows system DLL.
  • Windows Update or servicing operations are failing.
  • The problem began alongside broader system corruption.

Open an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to finish. Then run:

sfc /scannow

Restart Windows after both commands complete. Microsoft explains this order in its guide to using DISM and System File Checker.

A successful result means Windows found and repaired system components, or that no integrity violations were found. It does not prove that the game’s FMOD files are correct. Verify or reinstall the game afterward.

If you are tired of repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that identifies reported system problems; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling the affected game remains the definitive fix when its own files are missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 11: Update or reinstall drivers only for a crash

A missing-file message is rarely fixed by a graphics or audio driver update. However, if the game crashes while identifying fmodstudio.dll as the faulting module, the real cause may be an audio device, graphics driver, hardware acceleration path, or another native plugin.

Use Device Manager when crash evidence points to a device:

  1. Press Windows key + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Sound, video and game controllers for audio devices.
  4. Expand Display adapters for graphics devices.
  5. Right-click the relevant device.
  6. Select Properties.
  7. Open the Driver tab.
  8. Note the provider, date, and version.
  9. Select Update Driver.
  10. Choose Search automatically for drivers.

If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the same properties page and select Roll Back Driver when available.

For a clean vendor reinstall, download the driver from the graphics, motherboard, laptop, or audio-device manufacturer. Choose the exact Windows version and hardware model. Restart after installation and retest the game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are hunting through multiple hardware sites and guessing which of many drivers is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can show outdated drivers in its free scan; the full version performs driver installation, but a driver change is relevant only when crash evidence implicates the device.

Do not present driver installation as the normal cure for a genuinely missing fmodstudio.dll.

Fix 12: Check for a damaged user profile

If FMOD Studio or a development tool works for one Windows account but fails for another, the problem may involve a damaged profile, permissions, or per-user configuration.

Use a temporary local account as a diagnostic:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Accounts.
  3. Select Other users.
  4. Select Add account.
  5. Create a local test account.
  6. Sign in to that account.
  7. Launch the affected application.

If it works there, the original profile may contain damaged settings or permissions. Do not move the entire profile blindly. Reinstall the application for the affected account, reset its per-user settings according to the vendor’s instructions, and copy only known-safe user data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 13: Use System Restore as a last resort

System Restore is appropriate when the issue began immediately after a driver, Windows update, or software installation and application repair has failed.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select a restore point created before the problem began.
  3. Review the affected programs and drivers.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Select Finish.
  6. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore can remove programs, drivers, and settings installed after the selected restore point. It does not replace careful game verification and should not be used merely because one game has a missing DLL. Microsoft documents the process in its guide to point-in-time restore for Windows.

Why regsvr32 does not fix fmodstudio.dll

Do not run this as a general repair:

regsvr32 fmodstudio.dll

regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is intended for certain COM and ActiveX components, not ordinary game runtime libraries.

fmodstudio.dll is loaded by the application as a native FMOD runtime. It is not normally registered in the Windows registry. Running regsvr32 may produce an entry-point error and does nothing to restore the correct game files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only use regsvr32 when the software vendor explicitly identifies a DLL as a self-registering COM or ActiveX component and provides registration instructions.

What the common error messages mean

“fmodstudio.dll was not found”

The file is absent from the directory Windows searched, or the game installation is incomplete. Verify or repair the game first.

“The program can’t start because fmodstudio.dll is missing from your computer”

This is a generic Windows loader message. It does not mean the DLL belongs in Windows. Restore it through the application’s official installer.

“DllNotFoundException: Unable to load DLL ‘fmodstudio’”

This commonly appears in Unity or .NET applications. Check the final output folder, native plugin import settings, architecture, and dependencies.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The specified module could not be found”

The named DLL may be missing, or a dependency required by that DLL may be missing. Check Visual C++ runtime requirements, Windows N Media Foundation components, and the full error log.

“The code execution cannot proceed because fmodstudio.dll was not found”

The executable could not locate the runtime during startup. Check the folder beside the actual executable and repair the application.

“Not designed to run on Windows” or status 0xc000012f

The binary may be corrupted, incomplete, or incompatible with the process architecture. Replace the complete application installation with the official matching version.

“Entry point not found”

This strongly suggests a version mismatch. The executable or plugin may be loading a different FMOD DLL than the one it was built against. Restore the complete matching FMOD package rather than replacing one file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Safe sources and unsafe shortcuts

Avoid DLL download websites for fmodstudio.dll. A separately downloaded file can be:

  • Malware or a tampered binary.
  • The wrong x86, x64, or ARM64 build.
  • From an unrelated FMOD release.
  • Missing a matching fmod.dll.
  • Incompatible with the game’s sound banks.
  • Unable to fix the dependency that caused the original error.

Use these sources instead:

  • The game’s own launcher verification or repair function.
  • The official game publisher or platform installer.
  • The official FMOD download portal for developers.
  • Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
  • Microsoft’s official Windows Optional Features and repair tools.

For an end user, the game’s installer is the authoritative source because the vendor knows which FMOD build its executable expects.

Diagnostic checklist for unresolved errors

Before contacting the game developer, FMOD support, or the application vendor, record:

  1. The complete error text.
  2. The name of the executable that fails.
  3. The full path to that executable.
  4. The full path to fmodstudio.dll, if present.
  5. Whether fmod.dll is beside it.
  6. Whether the problem affects one game or several programs.
  7. Whether the issue began after an update, reinstall, antivirus event, or driver change.
  8. Whether the application is x86, x64, or ARM64.
  9. Whether the game is modified with mods.
  10. Whether the game was verified or reinstalled from an official source.
  11. Whether antivirus quarantine contains the file.
  12. Whether the error names another missing dependency.
  13. Whether Unity or Unreal is involved.
  14. Whether the application works under another Windows account.

Do not attach a random replacement DLL to a support request. Send logs and paths instead, and let the vendor provide the exact package.

Prevention

Keep the game installed through its normal launcher and allow updates to complete before shutting down Windows. Avoid manually moving individual DLLs between game folders, especially between different titles using FMOD.

For developers:

  • Keep fmod.dll, fmodstudio.dll, headers, import libraries, integrations, and banks from a compatible FMOD package.
  • Build each architecture with its matching native libraries.
  • Confirm that release output contains the runtime DLLs.
  • Test the packaged Unity or Unreal build, not only the editor.
  • Keep the FMOD Studio project and integration major versions aligned.
  • Document the required Visual C++ runtime for users.
  • Package the required Windows architecture explicitly.

FAQ

Is fmodstudio.dll a Windows file?

No. It is an FMOD Studio API runtime supplied by a game, application, or developer integration. It normally belongs in the application’s own directory.

Can I download fmodstudio.dll separately?

That is not recommended. The correct build is application-specific, and a random replacement may be unsafe or incompatible. Verify or reinstall the program that installed it.

Should I copy it to System32?

No. Application-local placement is the normal model. Copying it to System32 or SysWOW64 can create conflicts and cause another program to load the wrong version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is fmodstudio.dll the same as fmod.dll?

No. FMOD Studio applications commonly need both. Core-only FMOD applications may need only fmod.dll.

Is fmodstudio.dll the same as fmodstudioL.dll?

No. fmodstudioL.dll is the logging or debug variant. Use the file requested by the matching application build.

Will installing DirectX fix the error?

Not specifically. Install DirectX only when the affected game documents it as a requirement or its installer provides the required component. A missing FMOD runtime is normally repaired through the game installation.

Will installing .NET fix it?

Not automatically. .NET can be required by a launcher or application, but it does not replace the native FMOD runtime. Follow the application’s documented requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Visual C++ Redistributable always fix it?

No. It helps only when a required Microsoft runtime is missing or damaged. It does not replace fmodstudio.dll or correct an FMOD version mismatch.

Does regsvr32 repair it?

No. fmodstudio.dll is normally an application-loaded runtime, not a self-registering COM server.

Why does the file exist but Windows still say it is missing?

Windows may be failing to load a dependency of fmodstudio.dll, or the file may be in a directory that the executable does not search. Check the architecture, output path, Visual C++ runtime, and Windows N Media Foundation components.

What if the game works in Unity Editor but not after building?

Inspect the final build folder and Unity Plugin Inspector. Confirm that the FMOD DLL is included for the intended standalone Windows architecture, then run FMOD → Reorganize Plugin Files and rebuild.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the error appears in several unrelated programs?

Investigate shared dependencies, Windows corruption, antivirus activity, storage problems, or malware. Repeatedly downloading FMOD files will not address a system-wide failure.

What is the definitive fix for one game?

Verify or repair that game. If verification fails, reinstall it from the official launcher or publisher source so the executable, FMOD runtimes, dependencies, and sound banks are restored as a compatible set.
