If Football Manager 26 crashes, freezes, or will not launch on PC, work through SEGA’s recommended checks one at a time. Launch the game after each change and stop when the problem is fixed. These are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed fixes for every PC.

Before troubleshooting: check when the crash happens

Note whether Football Manager 26 fails as it starts, shows a black screen or freezes on launch, crashes during a match or other gameplay, or fails on the same in-game date. That detail helps you choose the relevant branch and explain the problem if you contact support.

First compare your PC with the current Football Manager store listing’s minimum requirements. SEGA directs players to the store page for the current specifications; do not rely on requirements listed for an older Football Manager release. See the official Football Manager Getting Started page.

Try SEGA’s eight checks, one at a time

  1. Temporarily remove custom files and additions

Move custom graphics, editor files, skins, and other additions out of the game’s data locations temporarily, then try launching. If the game works, restore items in small groups—or one at a time—to identify which addition is causing the conflict. Keep a copy of anything you move.

  2. Clear caches and preferences using SEGA’s instructions

Follow the cache and preferences steps in SEGA’s cache and preferences guide. Do not delete the entire Sports Interactive folder indiscriminately; it may contain data you want to keep.

  3. Verify the game files

Use the file-verification option in the store or launcher where you own Football Manager 26. Verification checks the installed game files and can replace damaged or missing files. SEGA’s troubleshooting guidance includes file verification among the recommended checks.

  4. Update your graphics-card driver

Install an appropriate current driver using your graphics-card manufacturer’s official update route, then restart the PC and try the game again. If the problem began immediately after a driver change, note that when contacting support.

  5. Check for conflicting programs

Close or temporarily exit other programs that may conflict with Football Manager, then test again. SEGA recommends checking for programs known to cause issues with FM; do not assume a particular application is responsible without testing.

  6. Check whether antivirus software is interfering

Review your security product’s quarantine and allow-list guidance for Football Manager and Steam. If you run a controlled test, follow the vendor’s instructions and restore protection afterward; do not leave antivirus protection disabled broadly.

  7. Test with a fresh Sports Interactive game-data folder

Back up saves and other relevant data before moving or resetting any folders. Then follow SEGA’s instructions to create a new game-data folder and test the game with it. If Football Manager starts, add your backed-up data back carefully to find the item associated with the problem. SEGA’s current sequence is described in its troubleshooting guide.

  8. Retest after every change

Launch Football Manager after each individual check rather than applying several changes together. This makes it easier to tell which step helped and avoids unnecessary resets or changes once the game is working.

If the game shows a black screen or freezes on launch

SEGA has a separate set of launch-specific options. Try them individually, testing the game after each one; they are not guaranteed fixes and are intended for this symptom.

  • Run FM.exe as administrator: use the executable’s Windows option to launch it with administrator privileges.
  • If you use NVIDIA graphics, test with the GeForce Experience in-game overlay disabled.
  • If you use Steam, test the launch option --no_exclusive_fullscreen. Remove the option again if it does not help.

See SEGA’s launch troubleshooting instructions for its guidance.

What to send SEGA if Football Manager 26 still crashes

If the staged checks do not resolve the problem, submit a request through SEGA Support. Include when the crash occurs and what you have already tried.

For a crash that happens on a specific in-game date, SEGA asks for the relevant crash dump and a save game, preferably from just before the crash. Its launch-error guidance also recommends attaching a DxDiag report and crash dumps when the PC is older or its suitability is uncertain. Follow the support article’s instructions for locating and attaching files.
