1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOblivion Remastered is not simply Skyrim with older quests and new graphics. Its clearest differences for a Skyrim player are a more explicitly planned character build, spellmaking, faction storylines with their own advancement, and the Arena. The remaster also changes how the 2006 game moves and fights: it adds sprinting, overhauls animations and improves third-person play, while redesigning leveling to draw on both games. This is a guide to the biggest verified differences—not a literal list of every mechanic that differs.
Start with a character built around a class
Oblivion asks you to define your character more explicitly at creation. The original game’s manual describes choosing a class, attributes and major skills, or creating a custom class. That makes the starting decision feel more like choosing a playstyle in advance than simply beginning with a broad character concept. The manual describes the original game; the remaster has since revised leveling, so its old progression rules should not be assumed to apply unchanged. Bethesda’s original PC manual and Bethesda Support’s remaster leveling guidance are useful references for the distinction.
Choose a class that matches how you want to play
If you enjoy planning a character around particular skills, try a class or custom class that reflects your intended approach rather than treating creation as a cosmetic choice. Bethesda Support says remaster leveling follows increases in major and minor skills. The broad practical point is that skill growth still matters to progression, but the remaster’s redesigned system means you should not rely on assumptions about the original game’s exact level-up math.
Make spells, not just cast them
One standout activity is spellmaking: creating custom spells rather than limiting yourself to spells acquired as-is. Bethesda’s July 16, 2025 Update 1.2 notes include a fix for the Spell Making menu, confirming that the feature is present in Oblivion Remastered. That makes magic a build system as well as a combat option: you can experiment with custom magic to suit your character. The patch notes do not establish a complete list of available effects or recipes, so this guide does not try to enumerate them. Bethesda’s Update 1.2 notes also show that the remaster has received gameplay changes after launch.

Join factions for their own storylines and advancement
Factions give you structured paths through the world alongside the main story. The original manual describes four joinable guilds, each with its own storyline and rewards. If you are used to moving between open-world quests in Skyrim, treat a faction as a commitment to follow a dedicated sequence of missions and pursue its associated advancement, not merely as a single errand or a place to pick up work. For the specific guild names and details, consult the original PC manual.
Enter the Arena to watch, bet, or fight
The Arena offers a more focused activity than roaming between quests. The original manual describes the option to bet on matches or become a combatant yourself. It is a concrete change of pace: you can engage with the spectacle as a spectator, or step into the fights rather than taking on another exploration or faction objective. This is an original-game feature documented in the manual; the cited source does not provide a remaster-specific guide to Arena rules or rewards.
Expect a remaster, not an untouched 2006 control scheme
Bethesda released Oblivion Remastered on April 22, 2025, presenting it as an updated version of the 2006 game. The original vision and content remain the foundation, but the remaster modernizes important parts of the experience. Sprinting, rebuilt locomotion and combat animations, a more usable third-person perspective, updated UI and UX, and new dialogue recordings are remaster changes—not differences that should be attributed to the original game. Bethesda also says its redesigned leveling system is inspired by both Oblivion and Skyrim, so character progression is not simply the old system left intact. Bethesda’s extended look at the remaster describes these updates.
A limited combat contrast with Skyrim
Bethesda describes Skyrim as letting players wield a weapon in one hand and a spell in the other. That offers one useful contrast in how the games present hand-based combat, but it is not a complete comparison of their magic or combat systems. Meanwhile, sprinting and revised animations are part of the remaster’s modernization, rather than proof that the original Oblivion had the same movement feel as Skyrim. Bethesda’s description of Skyrim explains the one-hand weapon-and-spell example.
