Why Hunter, Herbalist, Busker, and Blacksmith make a strong starting party
Anderson’s recommendation covers both physical and magical damage while drawing on a useful range of stats. That gives a new party a balanced baseline without assuming that one damage type or a narrow specialty will suit every fight. The recommendation comes from the developer, but it is a personal preference rather than a published ranking or controlled comparison. What each class contributes to the plan
The key point is the party’s overall mix, not a claim that each class has a fixed, exclusive job. IronOak describes classes as having distinct stats and abilities, and the developer’s stated rationale for these four is their combined damage coverage and stat flexibility. IronOak’s game overview describes the class and item variety that makes different combinations possible.
How the combat grid should change your composition
Class selection is only part of party planning. Combat uses a grid, with movement, area attacks, tile buffs and debuffs, and attacks that target rows. A lineup that looks balanced on paper can still be exposed if its placement leaves vulnerable characters in the path of an area or row attack. Consider how the party can move and manage exposure as well as how it deals damage.

- Watch enemy positioning and row attacks before committing characters to a vulnerable arrangement.
- Account for area attacks and tile effects when deciding where a character should stand.
- Use movement to respond to changing threats rather than treating the initial formation as fixed.
These grid considerations explain why a single class list cannot guarantee success across encounters: positioning and the fight’s mechanics matter alongside class choice.
Other compositions and when to adapt
There is no substantiated universal best party or comprehensive tier list across campaigns, difficulties, and character unlocks. A fan guide offers role-based templates involving damage, healing or support, tanking, and control, but those are community suggestions rather than official rankings. Use them as ways to think about a team’s needs—not as proof that a particular four-class combination is optimal. The independent community guide provides those role-oriented examples.

When you have more characters unlocked
Anderson says he likes to use Alchemist with the Nimble trait after unlocking more characters. Treat that as an optional progression variation, not a required upgrade to the starting party. The relevant question is whether the unlocked option suits the damage mix, stats, and grid demands you want to cover.
When downloadable content affects your options
Available characters can depend on the content you own. IronOak’s announcement feed distinguishes free updates from paid character packs; its May 2026 announcement describes Into The Wild as a paid pack featuring Beekeeper and Angler. Check the official Steam announcement feed for the details of a specific update or pack before planning around its characters.

Party size and roster context
The game supports solo play and groups of up to four players; in two-player co-op, each player can control two characters, according to the developer’s official overview. A four-character party therefore works as a full roster whether one person controls it or players share control.
Roster totals are date-sensitive. IronOak’s website describes “over 17 playable characters,” while a June 2026 Steam announcement refers to a roster of 23 playable characters at that time. Neither statement establishes an exact total for October 2026, so check current official announcements if a precise count matters.
