Instead of fighting through the map, visitors can look at Renaissance paintings, enjoy wine and cheese, and listen to Bach’s “Suite No. 1 in G major.” It’s a playful reimagining of the 1993 game, not a new commercial Doom release.
What is Doom: The Gallery Experience?
Created by Filippo Meozzi and Liam Stone, this browser game/mod repurposes Doom’s first level as a place to browse art rather than battle demons. It keeps the recognizable setting but changes what the player is there to do: explore a gallery, take in the paintings, and learn more about them.

The work also turns Doom’s familiar conflict into a joke about art-world social rituals. Meozzi described the idea this way: “The idea that I thought [of was] Doom is, you know, you go to hell and you kill demons and part of going to a gallery opening is you’re fighting the demonic nightmare of all of these people blowing smoke up everyone else’s back end,”
What can you do in the Doom art gallery?
- View Renaissance paintings: The gallery places artworks in Doom’s E1M1 environment.
- Follow links to learn more: Each artwork includes a link to its corresponding page at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
- Enjoy the gallery-opening atmosphere: Wine and cheese are part of the experience.
- Listen to Bach: The soundtrack includes Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Suite No. 1 in G major.”
Where can you play it?
Doom: The Gallery Experience is available to play in a browser on Itch.io and Newgrounds. Both are free access points for the experience.

#1 Best Overall
- Gain access to the latest demon-killing Tech with the DOOM Slayer's advanced praetor suit, including a shoulder-mounted flamethrower and the retractable wrist-mounted DOOM Blade
- Upgraded guns and mods, such as the Super shotgun's new distance-closing meat hook attachment, and abilities like the double Dash make you faster, stronger, and more versatile than ever
- You can't Kill demons when you're Dead, and you can't stay alive without resources. These tools are the key to your survival and becoming the ultimate demon-slayer
- A new class of (destructible) demon
- Battle mode is the new 2 versus 1 multiplayer experience built from the ground up at id software
How is it different from a conventional Doom mod?
| Aspect | Conventional Doom play | Doom: The Gallery Experience |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Combat and survival | Contemplation and gallery browsing |
| Interaction | Shooting enemies | Exploring artworks and following museum links |
| Presentation | A hellish setting with demons | E1M1 reworked as an art gallery |
| Access | Depends on the particular game or mod | Free browser play through Itch.io and Newgrounds |
Those contrasts come from the experience’s documented design: it uses Doom’s opening map as a familiar frame, then replaces the expected action with art and gallery culture.
