Former Star Wars Battlefront II developer Mats Helge Holm said in May 2025 that he and some former colleagues would like to reunite for the franchise. That was an expression of interest, not an announcement that EA or DICE had restarted development or approved Battlefront 3.
What did the former Battlefront developer say?
Windows Central reported on May 22, 2025, that Holm responded to a Reddit user asking which developers would return to EA to work on a new game. Holm worked on the 2015 Battlefront reboot and its 2017 sequel, and later served as an associate producer on the sequel’s 2019 Celebration Edition, according to Windows Central’s report.

His reported reply was: “Me, and having heard around my group of ex-colleagues, we want to get the gang back together.” He also cautioned that rebuilding the original team would be difficult because former colleagues had dispersed.
How many people were playing Battlefront II?
During the May 2025 resurgence, Windows Central reported a recent Steam peak of 9,292 players and said the game regularly reached 7,000–9,000 players. These are historical Steam figures reported in May 2025, not a current 2026 count or an all-platform total. The report placed the surge against a previous high above 10,000 in January 2021, noting that the game had reached 5,000 only once in the intervening period. Battlefront II was also available on EA App, Epic Games Store, Xbox One and Series X|S, PS4 and PS5, and through EA Play, but the report said there was no official way to track player counts on those other platforms. A creator’s claim of more than 160,000 concurrent players across platforms was attributed to a “reliable source”; it was not an independently verified total and should not be treated as one.
Why did the game’s attention return?
Windows Central pointed to several events around the same time: May the 4th celebrations, a Star Wars-themed Fortnite season, and season two of Andor. These were contextual factors reported alongside the player increase, not measured explanations of how much any one event contributed.

Does this mean Battlefront 3 is happening?
No. Holm spoke about what he and some former colleagues would like to do; the report did not identify EA approval, a DICE commitment, or a new Battlefront project. Video Games Chronicle reported that EA released Battlefront II in 2017 and ended its support in 2020 (VGC). The reported comeback sentiment does not change that status.
Windows Central also relayed an anonymous developer’s explanation that licensing costs had been a reason for rejecting a proposed Battlefront 3. That was a secondhand, anonymous claim, not an established explanation from EA, so it does not confirm why a sequel was or was not pursued.

What did Holm say about a possible content pack?
Windows Central reported that Holm estimated an Andor-themed content pack could take six months with a properly sized team. This was his conditional estimate, not a development schedule or a plan announced by EA or DICE. The same report noted his view that reassembling the former team would be difficult.
