Set tactics for AI-controlled allies in battle, or use the Bodyguard Super Specialty for a separate way to handle weaker green overworld enemies.

In Star Ocean: The Second Story R, your AI-controlled allies automatically move and fight according to their assigned battle strategy. The game does not have a documented full-party auto-battle toggle for the character you control. For weaker green enemies on the overworld, community guidance points to the Bodyguard Super Specialty as a separate option.

Set battle strategies for AI-controlled allies

  1. Open the in-game tactics or strategy menu during a battle.
  2. Choose the behavior you want for each party member you are not controlling.
  3. Return to the fight: those allies will act according to their assigned strategy. The PlayStation Blog’s September 20, 2023 report puts it plainly: “Allies you’re not currently controlling will automatically move based on your strategy.” PlayStation Blog confirms the strategy-based ally behavior; a combat walkthrough describes setting strategies through the tactics menu.

This is automatic control for your allies, not a mode that takes over your active character. You still control that character and can switch characters, issue orders, choose targets, and use combat actions. Controls and button mappings vary by platform, so use the in-game prompts rather than relying on a universal button sequence.

Can you automatically handle green overworld enemies?

Community guidance identifies the Bodyguard Super Specialty as a way for party members to automatically handle weaker green enemy symbols on the overworld. This is separate from battle tactics: it concerns overworld encounters, and it does not make the character you control immune to starting a fight. Keep that character away from enemy symbols if you want to avoid entering combat on contact. The Bodyguard description here comes from community guidance, not an official instruction source.

What “auto-fight” does not mean

  • No documented universal auto-battle toggle: the official combat overview describes real-time actions, orders, target changes, character switching, and other controls, but does not document a control that hands the entire party—including the active character—to AI. PlayStation Blog
  • Targeting is not automation: selecting a target helps direct attacks; it does not replace control of your active character. Combat walkthrough
  • Break and Assault Action are combat mechanics: Square Enix says that depleting an enemy’s Break gauge temporarily incapacitates it, leaving it stunned and more vulnerable to damage. Assault Action calls an ally to follow up when its gauge is full. Neither mechanic is a full auto-battle mode. Square Enix battle overview

Which version does this apply to?

The remake is available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Steam, according to Square Enix. Nintendo’s current store page is for Switch 2 and notes that a Nintendo Switch version also exists: Nintendo eShop. The basic distinction—strategy-directed AI allies versus control of your active character—is not limited here to one platform, though menu labels and controller inputs can differ.
