Fortnite Age Ratings and Parental Controls: A Parent’s Guide

Fortnite’s U.S. Teen rating applies to Battle Royale, not every island. Learn how parents can limit experience ratings, chat, purchases, and younger-account features.

Fortnite Battle Royale is rated T for Teen in the United States, but that rating does not apply automatically to every island or experience inside Fortnite. Parents can set a rating ceiling, manage chat and purchases, and use device-level family settings—but younger players may also have a Cabined Account that limits features until a parent gives consent.

What age is Fortnite rated for?

Fortnite Battle Royale’s U.S. rating

The ESRB rates Fortnite Battle Royale T for Teen, citing Lyrics, Suggestive Themes, and Violence. Its listing also identifies the interactive elements Users Interact and In-Game Purchases. This rating describes Battle Royale in the ESRB system; it is not a blanket rating for every Fortnite experience, nor a guarantee that the game suits every teen or family. See the ESRB listing for its rating summary.

Other Fortnite experiences and regions

Fortnite is a platform for multiple experiences, and Epic says each has its own age rating. The available ratings span E to T, according to the ESRB’s parent guide. Ratings can differ by region because local authorities use their own systems; Epic’s parental-controls information and IARC documentation describe participating authorities, including ESRB, PEGI, ACB, USK, and ClassInd. Check the rating displayed for the specific experience in your child’s region rather than relying only on the Battle Royale rating or the fact that Fortnite installed.

Is Fortnite appropriate for my child?

That depends on the child, the particular experience, and the features you allow. The Teen rating is a useful starting point for Battle Royale in North America, while the island-specific rating can help you assess other experiences. Also consider whether you are comfortable with online interaction, in-game purchases, and access to creation tools. A rating is guidance, not a family-specific suitability decision.

ESRB President Patricia E. Vance describes the purpose of Epic’s controls this way: “Epic’s Parental Controls allow you to manage purchasing settings so you can prevent unauthorized payments, and you can also use these controls to manage which games your kids can play, to select your voice and text chat settings, and more.” The quotation appears in ESRB’s parent guide.

How do Fortnite rating limits work?

In Epic’s parental controls, a parent can choose the maximum age-rating level the child may access. Experiences rated above that ceiling require the parental-controls PIN to unlock. Epic’s example: choosing Everyone 10+ means the PIN is needed to access Teen experiences. This lets a child use Fortnite while limiting access to higher-rated islands.

Do not treat an Epic Games Store rating preference of Everyone or Everyone 10+ as a block on downloading Fortnite itself. Epic says those settings can still allow the Fortnite download while restricting which islands the child can access. Rating limits govern access to experiences, not necessarily access to the overall Fortnite application.

How to change Fortnite parental controls

  1. Confirm the account and region. Make sure you know which Epic account the child uses. If the account is Cabined, follow the consent email and complete the parent setup first. Verification options vary by region; Epic explains the process in its Cabined Accounts FAQ and parental-consent instructions.
  2. Set a rating ceiling. Open parental controls in the Epic Account Portal or Fortnite, then choose the maximum experience rating appropriate for your family. The PIN is required to access content above that level. Check each island’s displayed rating.
  3. Choose a chat audience. Set chat to the narrowest audience you want to permit—or Nobody. Epic says that, with parental permission, children under 10 can use Friends Only; ages 10–12 can use Friends Only or Friends and Teammates; players 13 or older may also have Everyone available. The controls may offer a stricter choice than the age-based maximum.
  4. Set purchase boundaries. Review Epic purchase settings and spending limits, remove saved payment methods if appropriate, and set purchase restrictions on the console or mobile device too. Epic’s support information describes controls and spending limits by platform.
  5. Review other permissions. Epic’s controls include connection settings and access to Creative and UEFN creation tools. Players creating content can encounter material that has not yet been submitted for rating or moderation. Epic also provides a separate permission for voice and written communication with AI features.
  6. Check the device separately and revisit settings. Epic controls are managed through the Epic Account Portal or Fortnite, but console and mobile family settings are separate. Review settings on every device the child uses; menus and available options can change.

Why can’t my child use Fortnite voice chat?

There are three common control-related explanations. First, the account may still be Cabined, with chat disabled while parent consent is pending. Second, the chat audience may be set to Nobody or another restrictive option. Third, the child’s age limits the audience choices available: under 10, the maximum is Friends Only; ages 10–12, Friends and Teammates; and age 13 or older, Everyone may be available. Epic’s voice-chat support page explains the age-based options.

What is a Cabined Account?

Epic applies a Cabined Account when a player indicates they are under 13 or below the digital-consent age in their country, whichever age is higher. Until a parent completes consent, the child can still play Fortnite and use previously earned or purchased content, but features including voice chat, free text chat, and real-money purchases are disabled. Epic describes account setup and the consent process in its Cabined Accounts FAQ.

Giving consent does not automatically open every feature. Parents can choose permissions during setup, and parental controls continue to determine access. If a feature remains unavailable after consent, check both the account’s permissions and the relevant control setting.

How should parents handle chat and spending?

Chat settings

Choose the audience deliberately: Nobody, Friends Only, Friends and Teammates, or Everyone where the child’s age permits it. These are audience limits, not substitutes for reviewing the platform’s own communication settings. The account’s Cabined status and age can also affect which choices appear.

Purchases and platform limits

Epic’s spending controls may not cover purchases made through a console or mobile platform store, and some limits do not apply to in-game currency. Set restrictions in the store or family account used on the child’s device as well as in Epic, and avoid leaving a payment method available if you do not want purchases made through that route. Epic’s parental-controls support outlines platform-specific options.

Fortnite gift cards are another way to add a finite balance to an Epic account, but they are a funding option, not a parental-control setting. Epic says the balance can be used for Epic games such as Fortnite, but not Fortnite Crew subscriptions; see its gift-card information.
