Community posts show players pairing Godzilla with dunk imagery and discussing emotes, but they do not establish who started the meme or how widely it spread.
Why Godzilla became part of the dunking joke
Epic Games made Godzilla a match-level character in Fortnite Battle Royale during Chapter 6 Season 1—not just an outfit. That scale and the spectacle of a giant monster moving through a match made Godzilla an easy subject for player-made basketball jokes.
Two community posts capture the connection. A February 3, 2025, Fortnite discussion describes using a dunk emote with Godzilla and Miku; commenters bring up the Venom slam-dunk meme. A separate January 28 post drew comments describing Godzilla dunking or appearing in a basketball game. Readers in those discussions used phrases including “dunking miku,” “Godzilla in a basketball game,” and “I fully believe Godzilla can dunk.” These are players’ jokes and descriptions, not official names for a Fortnite feature. Read the February 3 discussion and the January 28 post.
The posts show examples of players connecting Godzilla, dunk imagery, and emotes. They do not identify a definitive origin, demonstrate that one post inspired the other, or establish how representative the joke was across Fortnite’s player base.

How Godzilla worked in Fortnite Battle Royale
In its January 16, 2025 announcement, Epic said a portal might appear during a Battle Royale match starting January 17. The first player to enter it would become Godzilla, and only one player could become Godzilla in a match. Other players could fight the giant character by targeting weak spots.
- Roar: revealed nearby players.
- Mighty Stomp: sent players flying.
- Heat Ray: damaged players and structures.
That setup put one player in control of Godzilla while the rest of the match could react to—and battle—the monster. Epic’s announcement describes the mechanic as: “Only one player can become Godzilla when the portal spawns in a Battle Royale match.” Epic’s Fortnite announcement.

Godzilla items and the Chapter 6 Season 1 timeline
Epic’s announcement also listed Fortnite cosmetics and items tied to the event: the Godzilla Evolved Outfit, Godzilla’s Exo-Spine Back Bling, Crystal Fang Pickaxe, Mothra Glider, Lil’ Godzilla Attack Emote, and a Godzilla x Kong shop bundle. These are in-game items; the announcement does not establish that matching physical products were available.
The official Godzilla announcement says the Fortnite Godzilla Evolved Outfit is based on Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and confirms playable Godzilla alongside a Mechagodzilla and Kong bundle. That connects the game’s look to the film, but it does not make the dunking joke an official promotion or feature. Godzilla.com’s announcement.
