Fortnite Ballistic is a no-build, first-person 5v5 mode built around attacking and defending two bomb sites. Attackers try to plant the Rift Point Device; defenders stop the plant or prevent it from detonating. There are no respawns, and a round also ends when one team is eliminated. Epic’s latest Ballistic-specific update located here is dated August 26, 2025, so the live map rotation and whether the mode is still playable on October 8, 2026 are not confirmed.
What are the Fortnite Ballistic rules?
Epic announced Ballistic on December 7, 2024 as a competitive, round-based mode with Ranked and Unranked queues. Two teams of five alternate between attack and defense. The attackers carry the Rift Point Device and attempt to plant it at one of two sites; defenders can win by stopping the plant, defusing the objective after it is planted, or eliminating the attacking team. A round ends when the device explodes or a team is fully eliminated. There are no respawns.
At launch, teams switched sides after six rounds, and the first team to win seven rounds won the match. These are the rules in Epic’s December 2024 announcement, not confirmation that every value remains unchanged in a later live version.
Launch economy and equipment
Epic said players began a match with a Ranger Pistol and 800 Credits. Players earned Credits through eliminations and planting the device, then spent them at the start of a round on weapons and items. Survivors carried their gear and shields into the next round, except for consumables they had used. The launch announcement gave the planted device 45 seconds to detonate. Treat these as launch-announcement values rather than verified current settings.

Ranked and Unranked at launch
Epic’s December 2024 announcement described different rules for the two queues. Unranked could backfill a player who left and allowed the remaining players to stay on the server after a match. Ranked did not backfill leavers; leaving brought a rank penalty and temporary matchmaking lock. A disconnected Ranked player had five minutes to reconnect. Epic said Ranked matchmaking used the party’s average rank, while rank changes took account of current rank, rounds won and lost, eliminations, and assists. These are launch-era queue rules and may have changed.
Cosmetics and platform notes at launch
Ballistic supported selected Locker cosmetics: Outfits, Back Blings, Kicks, Wraps, Sprays, and Emotes. Pickaxes, Contrails, Instruments, Vehicles, and Jam Tracks were not supported in the mode. Epic announced launch availability on supported Fortnite platforms and regions except South Korea and Russia, while saying it planned to provide an update. That is a launch-time regional statement, not a current availability check.
What map is in Fortnite Ballistic?
Skyline 10 was Ballistic’s launch map. Epic’s dated updates then documented four additional maps and changes to some layouts. They are historical snapshots, not a confirmed current rotation.
| Map | What Epic documented | Update date |
|---|---|---|
| Skyline 10 | Named as the launch map. | December 7, 2024 |
| Hammer Fall | Previewed as a shell map, without environmental art, so Epic could adjust its layout using feedback. Epic said it would arrive in v34.30; in August 2025 it described the map as art-complete. | Preview: March 24, 2025; art-complete update: August 26, 2025 |
| Storm Chaser Cove | Added to the Test Grounds rotation as a shell map. Epic later described changes to its paths, sightlines, and chokepoints. | Added: April 8, 2025; layout update: August 26, 2025 |
| Cinderwatch | Added as a shell map alongside the other maps in rotation; Epic said it would also be available in Ranked from day one. | May 15, 2025 |
| K-Zone Commons | Added to the rotation; Epic later described changes to its paths, sightlines, and chokepoints. | Added: June 18, 2025; layout update: August 26, 2025 |
In the April 8, 2025 v34.30 update, Epic said Test Grounds replaced the former Unranked Ballistic playlist. Its map rotation included Storm Chaser Cove, Hammer Fall, and Skyline 10. Epic said map selection depended on which maps queued players had recently played. The May and June updates expanded the documented rotation, but those past lists do not establish which maps are live now.

How did Ballistic change after launch?
Ballistic’s early-access rules, map pool, weapons, gadgets, and Ranked plans changed through dated updates. Epic’s announcements distinguish between changes introduced and features it was still exploring.
- March 24, 2025 (v34.20): Epic previewed balance and economy changes involving several shotguns, rifles, and Credit prices. It also said it was exploring HUD and inventory improvements, prioritizing the first-person feel, and developing a surrender function. A preview does not confirm that every discussed feature shipped.
- April 8, 2025 (v34.30): Epic introduced Test Grounds, Fire Grenade and Overdrive gadgets, and the Burst Assault Rifle and Sovereign Sniper. It said Ranked ranks were reset for an R&D season and noted matchmaking-fill improvements. Epic reported that nearly 90% of matches were starting 5v5 at that time; that is a developer-reported operational figure from April 2025, not a current rate.
- June 18, 2025 (v36.10): Epic added the Machine Pistol, Med Mist Grenade, and a pre-game warmup. It listed five maps in the rotation and said matchmaking was based on party average rank.
- August 26, 2025 (v37.10): Epic announced the Veiled Precision SMG and Deployable Wall, described changes to Storm Chaser Cove and K-Zone Commons, and said Hammer Fall was art-complete. It also listed Auto-Surrender: a prompt at the start of Round 3 if a player was detected as idle or the team had fewer than five players. The update described gunplay changes and said the planned Ranked Season 3 start had moved to v37.20 because of an issue.
Is Ballistic still available?
The official Ballistic-specific update located here is Epic’s v37.10 post, published August 26, 2025. That post does not establish whether Ballistic remains playable, what map rotation is live, or which weapons, gadgets, and Ranked rules are current on October 8, 2026. Check Fortnite’s current in-game mode listing or a newer official Epic update for the live status rather than relying on the historical map and rules above.
Who might enjoy Ballistic?
Ballistic’s attack-and-defense objective, limited lives, and resource spending reward communication and coordinated decisions more than simply pursuing eliminations. Ranked is the competitive queue described by Epic; Unranked was presented at launch as the more flexible option, with backfill and the ability to remain on the server after a match. Because Epic’s queue descriptions are from launch, players should check the current queue details in-game. A microphone can help teammates coordinate, but it is optional; Epic did not specify any required audio hardware.
