It launched in Early Access on December 11, 2024, but PC Gamer reported that Epic planned to take the mode offline on April 16, 2026. That reported shutdown date means Ballistic is no longer a current Fortnite mode.
What Fortnite Ballistic was
Epic described Ballistic as “an adrenaline-filled, round-based 5v5 competitive game mode where strategy, tactical teamwork, and individual prowess are essential for victory.” The Epic Games Store listing characterized it as a first-person tactical FPS and said it was the first Fortnite mode built with UEFN’s First Person Camera Mode Device. Ballistic was free-to-play digital content within Fortnite, not a separate physical game.

The Counter-Strike comparison is useful for orienting players: both fit the broad description of team-based, round-by-round tactical shooters. It should not be taken to mean that their rules or implementations were identical. Ballistic had its own setting and systems, and the available official descriptions establish the format rather than a complete one-to-one rules comparison.
How Ballistic developed
Ballistic entered Early Access with ranked and unranked playlists. Epic said it would adjust the mode in response to player feedback and planned to add maps, weapons, and features. The changes documented in later updates show a mode still being developed, so details from a particular update should be read as snapshots, not as an unchanging final specification.

March 24, 2025: balance and first-person improvements
Epic’s v34.20 notes covered weapon-balance and credit-economy changes, map development, gadgets, and requests for player feedback. Epic also discussed planned improvements to the first-person feel. These notes illustrate how Ballistic’s tactical systems extended beyond its 5v5 format, but they do not establish that every listed change was present at launch.
April 8, 2025: Test Grounds and new content
Epic’s v34.30 notes introduced a Test Grounds playlist and described two shell maps, additional weapons and gadgets, and a ranked season. This was a dated update to an Early Access mode, rather than a definitive account of Ballistic’s complete map or weapon lineup.

When Ballistic went offline
PC Gamer reported on March 24, 2026, that Epic said Ballistic would go offline on April 16, 2026. Epic’s current Fortnite news index does not feature Ballistic among recent active mode updates, but the precise closure date here is attributed to PC Gamer; the official closure notice is not cited in the available sources.
For a player looking for a Fortnite mode to play now, Ballistic is therefore a historical mode rather than a currently available option. Its launch and update history remain useful for understanding what Epic built and how it changed during Early Access.
