Fortnite’s customizable companion feature is real, but it is no longer a leak: Epic announced Sidekicks on October 30, 2025, one week after the TechJuice report this headline originally described. Epic’s announcement confirmed companions across Fortnite experiences, but not that report’s specific claims about mined files, a campaign, gameplay bonuses or a coming update. Sidekicks have since expanded into UEFN, where creators can script them as NPCs.
What Fortnite Sidekicks are
Epic described Sidekicks as companions that join players in Battle Royale, LEGO Fortnite, creator-made experiences and more. In its October 30, 2025 announcement, Epic called a Sidekick “your own customizable companion.” The feature is confirmed and launched; the original report’s framing of it as an upcoming leak is outdated.
Sidekicks can react to the world, but they are not combat or detection tools. Epic’s Spike listing says Sidekicks do not detect enemies or items. In Battle Royale, only a player’s team sees Sidekicks; visibility can differ in other experiences.
What players can customize
Appearance is a one-time choice
Epic says players choose a Sidekick’s permanent physical traits when customizing its appearance. Spike’s listing describes that appearance customization as a one-time choice that becomes locked. Choose those traits carefully: the appearance lock is different from the options that remain changeable.

Name and accessories can change
Epic says a Sidekick’s name and accessories can be changed at any time. Players can also earn Sidekick Points by spending time together and use them for cosmetics such as hats and hoodies. Those accessories do not make the permanent physical appearance editable.
What the original leak report did—and did not—establish
TechJuice’s October 23, 2025 story alleged that encrypted game files included “CompanionVariants” and cited unnamed leakers. It also speculated about a “Play Your Style” campaign, utility bonuses and a forthcoming update. Epic’s later announcement confirms the broader Sidekicks feature, but does not confirm those particular details. Claims about scanning, marking chests, map utility, rarity tiers or upgrade paths should not be treated as established features.
The original article also included statements attributed to analyst Benjy Greenfield and streamer Nick Eh 30. Epic’s announcement does not authenticate those quotes, so they are not reliable evidence of what Sidekicks do or how they were developed.

Launch timing and listed price
Epic’s 2025 rollout dates are historical, not future release windows. Epic said Peels would be available through the Battle Pass on November 1, 2025. Bonesy, Spike and Lil’ Raptor were among the Sidekicks scheduled to arrive in the Item Shop on November 7, 2025; existing Bonesy Back Bling owners were to receive Bonesy.
Epic’s Spike listing showed a price of 1,200 V-Bucks when observed for this update. That is a listing for Spike, not a universal price for Sidekicks, and Item Shop prices and availability can change. Epic’s confirmed monetization routes in these announcements are in-game: a Battle Pass unlock and Item Shop purchases using V-Bucks.
What changed for creators in 2026
On June 5, 2026, Epic announced that Sidekicks were available as scriptable NPCs in Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). The creator update describes preset appearance channels and behavior scripting with Verse. Epic said island publishing for this feature would begin July 23, 2026. This is a creator-platform development: it does not turn player-owned Sidekicks into enemy detectors or establish the speculative gameplay advantages from the 2025 leak story.
