Epic Games’ “second chance” policy for some Fortnite cheaters took effect in April 2025. It lifted certain existing lifetime cheating bans that had already been in place for more than a year—not every lifetime ban. Under the revised rules, a first cheating offense brings a one-year matchmaking ban, while a second brings a lifetime ban.
What changed in April 2025?
Epic announced the policy on February 27, 2025, saying the changes would begin in April. Its current support page confirms that the change took effect. The “next month” in the original headline referred to the period after the announcement; it is no longer a future change.
Epic said it would lift existing lifetime bans for cheating when they had been in effect for more than a year. The policy did not cover lifetime bans for selling cheats or for other violations. Epic’s February 2025 announcement describes the policy and its exclusions.
What happens after a cheating offense?
The consequences depend on whether it is a first or repeat offense, whether the cheating occurred in a tournament, and whether the conduct was cheating or selling cheats. Epic’s announced penalties are:

Epic also said cheating can bring legal repercussions. The exact consequences depend on the conduct and circumstances.
Which lifetime bans were lifted?
The change applied to existing lifetime bans for cheating that had been active for more than a year. It was not a blanket restoration of every banned account. Lifetime bans for selling cheats or for other violations remained in place.

Can a first-time cheater still log in?
Yes. The one-year penalty is a matchmaking ban, not a block on logging in: Epic says the player can still log in and use text and voice chat. The player cannot join matchmaking in Epic- or creator-made experiences or spectate other players during that ban.
Epic’s support guidance distinguishes matchmaking restrictions from broader Fortnite or account access sanctions. Its ban-types article describes temporary Fortnite bans as lasting up to 365 days and permanent Fortnite bans as indefinite. A matchmaking ban should not be read as proof that every kind of ban has the same access limits.

How does Epic say it detects cheating?
Epic says it bans accounts based on technical evidence rather than suspicion and asks players to report suspected cheating through Fortnite’s in-game reporting flow. Its February 2025 anti-cheat update describes several parts of its approach: fixing exploits, protecting code, using Easy Anti-Cheat’s kernel driver, and applying statistical analysis and machine learning.
Epic framed enforcement as an ongoing effort, not a single fix. The systems it described do not change the stated penalties for first and repeat offenses.

Can Player Support appeal a Fortnite ban?
Epic’s support guidance says Player Support cannot review or appeal Fortnite bans on a player’s behalf. Its ban-appeal guidance does not promise that contacting support will secure a review or reversal.

In a separate update published February 10, 2026, Epic said PC players entering any Fortnite tournament would need Secure Boot, TPM, and IOMMU enabled starting February 19, 2026. The update also described further enforcement and legal action against cheaters and other rulebreakers. These tournament security requirements are a later anti-cheat measure, not part of the April 2025 change to cheating-ban durations.
