Epic’s rule is clear: cheating, exploiting bugs, and promoting known cheats are prohibited in Fortnite. Its April 2025 guidance says a first cheating offense brings a one-year matchmaking ban and a second brings a lifetime ban. Epic does not say whether any specific third-party program will trigger a ban; Fortnite does not officially support third-party software, and Epic says using it is at your own risk.
What counts as cheating under Fortnite’s rules?
Epic’s Fortnite Code of Conduct states: “Don’t cheat, grief, or exploit bugs and glitches. Don’t promote or advertise known cheats or exploits.” The rule covers cheating and exploiting, as well as promoting or advertising known cheats. Epic’s Code of Conduct says it handles violations case by case, with consequences ranging from a warning to a permanent ban depending on severity and repeat behavior.
What penalties does Epic state for cheating?
Epic’s April 2025 cheating-offense guidance specifies a one-year matchmaking ban for a first-time cheating offense and a lifetime ban for a second offense. This is Epic’s stated policy, not a statistic about how often bans occur or how often cheating is detected.

A matchmaking ban is not the same as losing the ability to log in. Epic’s ban guidance says someone with a matchmaking ban can still log in and use text or voice chat, but cannot enter Epic- or creator-made experiences during the ban. The same guidance says temporary Fortnite bans can last up to 365 days; permanent bans are indefinite. A permanent ban may also mean losing access to games, V-Bucks, and purchased content.

Can third-party software get you banned?
Epic’s support answer is deliberately limited: “Epic Games Support cannot determine or disclose whether using a specific third-party software can lead to a ban in Fortnite.” Epic says Fortnite does not officially support third-party software and that players use it at their own risk. As a result, its guidance does not establish that a particular program is safe, or that every program in a broad category will lead to a ban. See Epic’s third-party software FAQ.
What has Epic said about anti-cheat enforcement?
In a February 27, 2025 anti-cheat update, Epic discussed security checks and said that, following legal action, makers of Cronus devices removed Fortnite and Rocket League gamepacks and scripts that helped people cheat from their website. That announcement is a specific example of action against cheating aids; it does not describe an exhaustive detection method or establish that every device or setup is detected the same way.

How can players protect their accounts?
Be wary of offers for free games or V-Bucks that ask you to enter Epic login details on an outside site. Epic’s account-security guidance says genuine offers appear through the Epic Games Store or Epic’s official websites and social channels. Use those channels rather than sharing credentials with a site making an unsolicited offer.
Caregivers can also review Epic’s parental controls, which include settings for social features and purchases, including whether a child can spend V-Bucks on paid random items. Available controls can depend on the account, and platform-level settings may also apply.

If you believe a sanction is mistaken or need to understand an account-specific case, use Epic’s official support and sanctions process. The published policy describes general consequences; it does not determine the outcome of an individual appeal.
